Good Vid. Im one of those rabids fans of this game, but I recognize the faults.

The magic system is fine though. You can either use the menu(terrible) or learn the imput for the spell(excellent). They are listed somewhere in the options menu IIRC.

Mind listing some the beat-em-ups you consider better?

Yeah, after making the video it was pointed out to me that you can do the magic by entering street fighter like commands on the D-Pad. Oh well.

As for better fighters, well on the Saturn there really aren't any to be honest but any of the greats such as Final Fight (Mega CD coming out on top), Bare Knuckle 2, the 3rd Rushing Beat game for the SFC and many others.

This week I have a very special Retro Core for you. Retro Core takes a look at the ultimate in rare Sega Saturn games, Derisoba Deluxe. Retro Core is THE FIRST to put videos of this game on YouTube that can be found through the search engine. I've checked and checked over the years and there has NEVER been a returned search result in either English or Japanese.

So what is so special about this disc? Well, sit back and enjoy the footage and explanations of this ultimate Sega Saturn collectors piece.

Don't forget that you can always download a higher quality version of this video from the official Retro Core site at http://www.segagagadomain.com/RetroCorepage-main.htm (Site updated normally on a Sunday).

Saturn fans may also want to check out the Segagaga Domain Store for some fantastic Saturn deals - http://www.segagagadomain.com/store/the-store.htm

Hey Yakumo, what's that intro music? Shazam didn't pick it up. I'd like to buy the mp3 somewhere!

Ah, that is MELL - Red Fraction (g.m.s remix) from the anime Black Lagoon. THe original is more guitar but I really do like this dance mix. Fantastic bass on it as well. Here are the covers to my CD single.

Now THAT was an interesting episode. I've seen the title mentioned several times in the forums as a sort of Holy Grail, so it's pretty cool that you obtained it.

Looking at the game, one just cannot help but imagine the crazy shouts of Japanese announcers narrating it on TV.

Now that Taromaru looks like a hardcore 2D Game that you'd find on a Sega system. It's got the vibe of an early 32 bit 2D game, and at that, it's quite classy.

Man, you're right, with today's hardware, 2D games would be fucking amazing... like Odin Sphere or Muramasa - which unfortunately are minority examples.

That Scott Pilgrim game is also really, really awesome and fully 2D. You should try that one.

I bought the Scott Pilgrim game when it was on sale, and thought it pretty much sucked.
I still think everyone got screwed out of one great generation of 2D games thanks to Sony pushing for 3D graphics on systems that couldn't handle it all that well. As a result, everyone was playing "great" games like Toshinden and Croc just because they were 3D, instead of us getting 2D games that would've looked and played great especially on the Saturn (sure, there were a lot of 2D games on Saturn, but they were mostly arcade ports). Just look at Symphony of the Night, then look at Tomb Raider and weep. The perception that 2D was "old stuff" lasted way into the last generation too.

It was only SCEAmerica and SCEEurope that insisted on the 'no 2D' thing. Just take a look through the Japanese catalogue and you'll find that at least 25-30% are 2D titles. The idea in the west was to distance the PSX from what went before hence the insistence on 3D.

Just look and King of Fighters 12/13. Stunningly beautiful. Makes SF4 like like crap.

Sounds like an accurate movie conversion :p

Taroumaru is a crown jewel on the Saturn. It's not often the case that the most expensive commercial game is also considered to be the best (in terms of sidescroll action games). I wonder whatever happened to the ST-V version which I think was announced but definitely never released.

Sonic 2 is also my favourite game in the series. I even went out of my way to get it when I finally got a Genesis. As you know, I wasn't much of a Sega gamer until Dreamcast.

That being said, the music in Sonic Adventure 2 is not that horrendous in some areas - and some of the levels are pretty cool.

Now that Gale Racer... that looks like it was defecated out of a pile of late 80s rejected games. Horrendous. Who made that? What's with that game?

What is the name of the vertical shooter at 0:08 of the video (in the title sequence)?

    As always, interesting material, sir.
