The vertical shooter would be Blast Wind...I also think Sonic 2 is the best in the series. S3&K is the one most people would choose, but there's a lot of boring level design (Sandopolis, for example) in the S&K part. Gale Racer is pretty awful, it was a port of an arcade game (already old by the time the Saturn came out) called Rad Mobile, which was actually the first game to feature Sonic, as the ornament seen in the video. In fact, every game featuring Sonic on the Saturn is bad except for Sonic Jam. Sonic 3D is boring as hell and Sonic R is shitty and for whatever reason, literally makes me want to barf.
The shooter is Blast Wind - about Gale Racer, I think it's awesome. It's one of Yu Suzuki's lesser known arcade titles and was released in the game centers as Rad Mobile. So you might be right about the rejected 80's project, lol. The Saturn port is technically a bit poor because of the extremely short sight which makes it pretty much inevitable to crash into other cars all the time. Still, it's a rather fun game and has a some nice original effects that other scaling racers don't have, like rain.
Gale Racer in the arcade (Rad Mobile) is indeed a great game but the Saturn ports is awful. Still fun in the short term but I still think it's a shitty game. Ave is right about some of the effects though. Night driving with headlights, misting up windows, rain on the window and so on. I always found it strange that they used polygons for the cars in the Saturn version rather than sprites like the arcade. It's not as if the polygon cars look any better. Yakumo
I remember reading about Rad Mobile in Mega Play and shitting my self over the fact it was a 32 bit game. Of course now...I don't shit myself over anything. I finally got to play it a few years ago and it is pretty good I don't even really mind Gale Racer either. For a Racing game on the Saturn it was pretty good.
What do you mean by "for a racing game on the Saturn"? There are some pretty damn good racers on Saturn.
I'd still say that among all the scaling-racers on the Saturn, Gale Racer is probably the worst. But that doesn't have to mean something really, it's hard to compete with Night Striker, Taito Chase HQ, SCI, OutRun and Power Drift.
Yeah, those are all great games, but I wouldn't call Night Striker a racer, it's a Space Harrier-style shooter, except you drive a flying car.
Night Striker is great, and the only thing really wrong with the Mega CD version is the horrendous graphics. Too bad the Saturn version, like the other Ving games, isn't all that cheap...
Daytona on Saturn is crap. Maybe I'm in the minority I really haven't played a Racer on the Saturn I can honestly say I LOVE
What? Saturn Daytona is crap? You're nuts to think that. Sure, it looks crap but plays like a dream. Everyone who played the arcade and the Saturn a lot will tell you that. Sega Rally is also another excelent Saturn racer as is Shutokou Battle once you power up the car. Yakumo
Yeah, Saturn Daytona is great as far as playability is concerned. Kinda sad that there hasn't been a version on any system that'd combine that playability with great graphics. And if you don't love Sega Rally...then I don't know what to say.
OK what's wrong with me I forgot all about Sega Rally. I didn't have Saturn Access until long after the system's death. I didn't enjoy the Saturn Daytona at all when I finally got to play it. By that time I had already had the Dreamcast Daytona.
Daytona USA 2001 for DC is really good as well. It doesn't play exactly like the arcade, but it's still pretty fun in its own right and it looks beautiful. And yes, Sega Rally for Saturn is great as well. Too bad I suck at it. It'd be cool if it used the 3D controller. I just realized the other day that After Burner II for Saturn uses the 3D controller. Pretty cool stuff. Unfortunately, mine is kinda of piece of crap. I'd like to get one of the white, Japanese ones in good condition.
The American Sega Rally is unfinished. hey releasd an unfinished game just to get it out early. The Japanese Sega Rally DOES have analogue controls as well as digital plus has more detail in the actual game. Yakumo
It does? I have the Japanese version, and I could've sworn I tried my 3D controller with it and it didn't work. Maybe it was just acting up, like it often does. I'll try it again later.
I used to like Sonic R but I gues that's just because of the looks. Even back when it was released I thought the controls were awful and now they seem a million times worse. It is a very pretty game with good ideas but the controls should have been far better than what they were. Yakumo
