I loved that racing special - it's depressing to think that Sega is unlikely to release the likes of SCUD Race, Daytona USA 2 and arcade perfect versions of other Model 3 titles such as Virtua Fighter 3 or Sega Rally 2 until emulation improves. Then again, didn't the creators of SuperModel make it their mission to accurately reproduce SCUD Race first before moving on to improve support for other games? If anything, could it be that the actual reason Sega won't release most of these isn't due to technical issues or even lost source code, but because of their racers in particular requiring expensive licenses? Although I've never seen confirmation of this, it's believed the cancellation of SCUD Race for the Dreamcast was really because the FIA took over the BPR not long after the original release of SCUD Race Plus. Also, wasn't there some controversy about AM2 crediting the manufacturers of the game's four playable cars yet not securing the rights from Renault to use the likeness of their Alpine GTA/A610, which is what the CPU cars are represented as? For the record, my old laptop had a Core i3 processor, 2GB of RAM and an onboard graphics chip. Despite this modest setup, it could run pretty much anything I threw its way in SSF at full speed (apart from a handful of 3D fighters, curiously enough, which only reached about 75% performance) and I could get SCUD Race up to approximately 15-20fps at the very best. Unfortunately, I never got to check how it handles VF3 or Sega Rally 2 since the third revision of SuperModel, as there were still quite a few major polygonal glitches that caused massive bouts of game-breaking slowdown to occur in both of those previously. Assuming there were no licensing problems, does anyone think a Model 3 compilation based around the latest build of this emulator is possible on something like the PlayStation 3, or would such an approach require hardware with vastly more power? I certainly had no great complaints about the Model 2 Collection... apart from that it could have done with more games, of course!
Sprite based 3d especially when Sega did it was more convincing than actual 3d Graphics when it came to creating artificial depth and speed perception. With Game Sack on Hiatus there couldn't be a better time for Retro Core 5 to be back.
Amazing video! Damn, i miss those days when arcades devs really pushed technology forward. The ammount of money going to R&D was probably insane! Sega ruled this technology. Curiously most of the games on this particular video, i only discovered through emulation. I remember more of games you already covered on Battle of The Ports, that were more succesful and probably had more machines produced. Still Air Rescue name alone brings so much nostalgia. I had the Master System game, that was totally different (obviously!). Have to say that the limited release of Alien 3 release is kinda weird, specially when there's the whole licensing involved. Same goes for the G.I. Joe game, which i never saw at local arcades.. By the way, have to also thank you for featuring Galactic Storm, first time i ever heard about it. Have some recommendations for a future episode: From Sega: - Rad Mobile, featuring the first appearance of Sonic. - F1 Exhaust Note and the sequel, F1 Super Lap, that had the official Formula 1 license. I'm not sure but i think the arcade i used to go back in the day had both of them. I do remember playing Exhaust Note. - G.P. Rider and Racing Hero. - Strike Fighter (1991, G-Loc sequel) - Stadium Cross - This was very common at the arcade during mid 90's. - Cool Riders - Only saw this game a couple of times and it was already 1999. From other companies: -Namco's Suzuka 8 hours and Final Lap series - Taito's Operation Thunderbolt - Capcom's Slipstream - F1 game that uses Sega's System 32 board and a joystick for controls. I saw it on location test for two weeks before it was gone. Years later i discovered that it's a very rare game and was tested only some south american countries.
Some good recommendations there Johnny. What I'll do is save most of them for another arcade racers show I plan on doing another one in the future. Operation Thunderbolt would sit in nicely though with another 3D sprite gaming show. Galaxy Storm is a big of a hidden gem. It is quite short mind you which is why it never saw any home port. It's worth checking out as some of the later levels are quite nice.
Thanks. It's fine to save for another themed video. Being a big fan of your channel, i'm glad i can help with recommendations that may lead for future content.
If we're tossing out ideas how about games made against type? That is an episode about games that aren't in the particular genre a developer is known for. Like Hot Blooded Family from Technosoft or Cool Cool Toon from SNK. Something from EA that's not over produced garbage.
If you ever decide to cover Steep Slope Sliders, it would be great to include at least a mention of the hidden mini game, which is more in keeping with Cave's shooting heritage. Also, its PlayStation exclusive sequel - Tricky Sliders - deserves a wider audience for having a split-screen option and various characters from BioHazard 2 as unlockable extras due to this being published by Capcom. Back to SSS, I'd love to see a comparison with the ST-V arcade version, as I've heard this is quite different to its Saturn counterpart in terms of content if not presumably graphics as well to a lesser amount, despite the two platforms being pretty much identical (apart from the amount of memory they contain).
Another great episode Yakumo. It's such a shame Dolphin Blue never got ported to anything! And i have to agree, Gun Force II is "Metal Slug Zero". The gameplay and sounds totally shows it. A run and gun i used to love back in the day was Desert Assault, from Data East. It was so much fun with 4 players.
On the subject of Dolphin Blue, has there been any progress in getting Atomiswave games running on the Dreamcast? I know that a few Chihiro titles are now playable on stock Xbox hardware, with much of the problem being its arcade variant featuing more RAM. I've been out of the loop, you see... My ideal scenario would be for at least Hikaru emulation to be perfected, if not just so I can finally sample Planet Harriers and Brave Firefighters (though I can't begin to imagine how the latter's control method could be reproduced)!
And so, now with the Super Famicom Rc being a popular show I'd like to do more on other systems. What would you like to see in the show? Oblivious the games but what else?
Mega CD will be covered but I was thinking more along the lines of what would you want to see in the actual show content wise. Do for example in the SFC shiw I covered the boxes, manuals and hardware.
System revisions? Best third party options to the original controller? Different packaging in each region?
