It seems that SEGA of Japan just updated their Dreamcast website.

Dreamcast users can register there with a user account for their console's serial number and will get an account @user.dreamcast.com.

The image linked to above is called "dc_promo_2008" which obviously hints to the fact that SEGA might be celebrating the 10th birthday of the Dreamcast this year.

If you ever wanted to show SEGA that you are still out there playing your Dreamcast, now is the time !

I have registered, although who is is showing the domain name still belonging to SEGA, I'm still doubtfull that this is an official effort...

Thanks for pointing this out though.

Why is the page in English? Surely it would be in Japanese too if Sega Japan set it up. Anyway, I signed up. By the way, what number do they want you to add? The HKT model number or the barcade number?

It's the serial number (number under barcode) that they want not the model number (HKT-3010) from the serial number they can surely the model number...

It does say on it "sponsored link"

Also link at bottom is to sega.jp.....not sega.com, suggesting it's a Japanese drive thing.

Whois doesn't give any clues to the site owner....

So this is just to celebrate the 10 years of the Dreamcast?

    Hmm, this is kinda cool.
Maybe it's to test the water for any future releases?

That's exactly my thoughts. Whatever they want to achieve with this and whatever we gain from registering, they certainly have found a way to test how many of us still have a working Dreamcast.

Hmm, I don't see how it could be a scam - it is still registered to Sega. The page may be in English, but it isn't very clear what information they're asking for!

Incidentally, isn't this more general gaming than rare and obscure gaming??!

It's the page itself that is rare and obscure ;-)

And for the life of me I can't understand why this would be a scam. It is registered by Sega Japan. Our japanese members perhaps could call the phone number?

I don't think I really understand Segafreak_NL's post (the one I quoted). Does he say that this Shenmue guy emailed him to warn us ? or that this Shenmue guy somehow is involved in this ? (potentially fake website, etc.)

The user 'Shenmue' seems a little strange to me. Pass 17 is an American server system (as far I can understand from google)
and it's unlikely SEGA would use a Play Asia affiliate program or Google Ads program. Also, I'd say most active Dreamcasts would be in Japan. There's no reason for them to exclude those users by using an English only registering mode.
The mail seems automated so I doubt it's the info (email/pass) the site is after, I think it's an obsessive fan trying to create some kind of stir. Just my 2 cents..I'd be just as happy as anyone to see some kind of new DC release but I'm sceptic.
