Yeah, that was what I've been thinking too. Still, it is VERY odd that they're using Google Apps.

EDIT: I think I hunted down 99% of my posts. If this turns out to be a legit thing, I certainly won't be the guy who will convince everyone to join again. >_<

http://www.dreamcast.com/shenmue2

The 404 page seems correct though, unless this guy was smart enough to copy/paste the Sega.jp 404 documents. This just seems like Shenmue.com all over again... Going to do some fishing on this domain anyway...

Was going to register my DC and got a page with this message
"Due the high volume of account requests, the service will be temporally suspended."

Updated Date: 07-mar-2008
Creation Date: 12-jun-2005
Expiration Date: 12-jun-2008
The domain is due to expire in June... I reckon this person has bought the thing back in 2005 and just linked to www.sega.jp/dc/hard or whatever, some things just don't add up at all. I might see if I can poach the domain in June if the current guy forgets to update it...

Sega wouldn't register that domain in 2005.

Fake.

Also check out the source code on the site, it's riddled with errors and I'm sure no paid employee who's a professional designer would fuck up on such a basic page so much...

I've tried to send an email to the host to report the site, but it just bounced back...

wtf.... just checking the headers on the email i received from them...

Return-Path: <shenmue@pass17.dizinc.com>

Received: from shenmue by pass17.dizinc.com with local (Exim 4.68) (envelope-from <shenmue@pass17.dizinc.com>) id 1JY0Pw-0000e5-Nj for myemailaddress@yahoo.co.uk; Sat, 08 Mar 2008 09:52:56 -0500

Seems a bit dodge, but Sega haven't come out with anything? Also I have about 60 people's email addresses all noted in the "to" on the email aswell!!!

I've found out the host is now hostdime.com and I've sent an abuse ticket to them, I want to see if the whole site will be taken down... Also, I've e-mailed shenmue@pass17.dizinc.com to see if I can get some kind of response...

I want answers!

Same here. It seems so legit, but then again it doesn't. I really love the Dreamcast and I want this to be true.

Looks like Sega let the URL die years ago, click the dates...

March 16 2005
- Last known date it still pointed to Sega.com
August 28 2005 - Generic shitty search page
April 24 2006 - To a different site...
Feb 16 2007 - Current location?

Looks to me Dreamcast.com hasn't been owned by Sega for 3 years... Anyway, why would Dreamcast.com point to SOJ? Dreamcast.com always was for SOA.

SEGAMark: I believe that although you got the domain, you wouldn't be able to keep it in your hands for much time (apart of the legal consecuences which it might mean). I got involved into something similar with SEGA of Europe because of much less even...

About the topic: Like many have stated, it seems to be fake since the begining. The technical contact doesn't match the host (bright.jp against hostdime.com). The HTML code also looks like poor, without DOCTYPE declarations and many deprecated HTML attributes. Apart of many other odd circumstances...

I think it's just an attempt from a fan to revitalize the dreamcast.com domain, making people get involved too, but with the wrong manners, under a pseudo-official appearance. This not only cause that people don't get interested in it, but just the contrary effect: They feel that someone is trying to cheat them. And that's not good.

Either that or we're facing another phising attempt.

Of all possibilities, that is what seems to be most likely the case I think. But why on earth would you want to do that instead of just building up your own website at "dreamcast.com"?

DCEvoCE: Well, I believe that there're 2 reasons which complement the each other:

1 - Although it's an infantile point of view, when someone "dress" something with an official appearance, it's because he/she consider it more professional, important and atractive (I'm speaking about his/her particular point of view only). An unofficial website is one among many, whereas an official one is unique. He/she may feel like being part of something big and also revitalizing it through the "original" way, not a personal project.

2 - Usually, using a too explicit domain which comes from a copyrighted product or mark for a website which treats the same theme causes problems with the owner company. For example, it's not the same to choose "everything-dreamcast.com" that just "dreamcast.com". I bet that SEGA would try to shut your website at "dreamcast.com" down independently of being unofficial (although you stated it in red capitol letters). Specially if your site got success and people talked about it everywhere.

Knowing that, I guess that people behind "dreamcast.com" decided just to try to make it look like official anyway, until SEGA realized about it. Obviously, it wasn't such as a good idea, since people on Internet aren't silly and follow the theory of "Distrust everything".
