Oh boy, it looks like it's just a series of faults eh! Interesting that the cabinet has been passed around a bit...
Yeah... poor old thing! I'll try and get hold of my friend, see what he says about popping it in his Out Run. I haven't spoken to him for a while. The last time I did, he contacted me, and apologized for the fact that he only contacts me when he wants something  Payback time!!! ;-)
Nicely found. I am cleaning an oven this morning (so Rock N' Roll it hurts!) so haven't been on eBay - thanks, thanks, thanks!!! Email sent to seller to establish whether he'd be willing to ship to the UK.
There's also a PSU, but I'm assuming your cab is from the UK. That said, why does it have a USA monitor manual? http://cgi.ebay.com/SEGA-power-supp...0|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50 You probably don't want it if your cab isn't 120V, though!
The unit is European, but I guess imported by Sega from 110vac region and modified. The serial numbers on the motherboards, amp and sound card etc corresponds to the little metal plate stamped "220vac" - it was the first thing I checked. As for the manuals, I am wondering whether whomever previously owned it just added in any old manual for the monitor he / she could get his / her hands on. I noticed the PSU after looking for that Hang On motherboard set. The owner is willing to ship to the UK, but he seems to think the boards are dead. I think honesty got the better of him given the cost of P&P etc. So....
They might have imported, yes, although they often had them remade in the UK (Taito usually got Electrocoin to make theirs, for example). Shipping costs were too expensive, usually. You could be right on the monitor manual. They would have to either stick a step-down transformer in the cab or replace the PSU if they had a 120V monitor. It's also possible that it was imported and that's why the monitor got changed (by the operator) - although that doesn't explain the manual not being for the WG original, either!! Heh, you do find some good people like that. I bought an external SCSI CD writer once from a computer salvage place on eBay. They contacted me before shipping to say they tested it and it didn't work, so they threw it out! Took a month and several internalional calls to get a refund, though!
Retro, I purchased those Hang On boards from the USA. The seller doesn't know their condition, but given that they MIGHT be working it's worth the risk. Tonight I decided to follow the entire wiring loom, clean it up a little and see whether I could trace any issue. Guess what? Right, notice how on the PSU that the WHITE is marked AC N, the brown beside it is AC L - straight forward and makes sense! Replace the white cable with blue and you have standard wiring. So, then I traced the cables backwards. Under a pair of connection, hidden from view I find this: Notice the dust, so it's been like this for a while. Right, so white should go to BLUE, and the brown should terminate to BROWN... but NOOOO! Cleaned up, you can see it better: WTF! I'm now thinking, is there something I am not understanding about this? Is there some reason why Deith Leisure would have done this that I don't know about? Or did someone come along and muck the wiring up a LONG time ago (hence dust), but a sticker on it suggest it was last in fully working order within the last 2 years. Not enough time to generate that kind of level of dust and grime surely? If they did reverse it, how did they not notice? If they reversed it, surely that would have killed everything, but I can't see any visual damage and why did the main attraction light up, the coin mech light come on and the monitor start to kick into life? Unless the transformer feeds the monitor before applying power to this section, the attract light must also be separate and then this area is dead, not feeding the motherboard... so why does the motherboard light LED come on?
That's AC, so it shouldn't matter ;-) The monitor comes on, so the 240V section seems OK. Have you checked the voltages on the PSU with a meter?
Hi, just done that now that I saw the AC explanation on Jamma+ - should have thought about that tbh, but the second I saw N connected to L my heart sank! I saw fried motherboard et al! I've checked the supply and it is a constant and steady, sufficient supply. I guess the PSU is not at fault. Oh, to answer a previous query, there is an onboard 110-230vac switch.
OK, so it's either a board fault or a monitor fault. I would suspect the board, probably. When do you get the boards? Hopefully you'll get something working with two sets
I'm going to look at the monitor this morning, if I get the chance. Robb is coming over for the Naomi U/R at about 12pm, giving me the perfect excuse to skulk around in the garage for a couple of hours. I'll pay for the motherboards this weekend and should expect them here in about 2 weeks from the USA.
Got to be the motherboards. Managed to get a steady monitor today after much tinkering and checking the chassis. The noise is the fan, not the PSU.
Does it not have a door switch, or have you taped it up? Yeah, certainly looks like a board issue. If you can't sort it yourself, you could ask Kev (Outrun) or there are a couple of other people who do repairs. I think Pinx does. And there's a place that repairs boards but are very expensive. If you can't get something sorted up your way, let me know.. I could take a look.
Hey, unlike the Ridge Racer cab there doesn't appear to be any kind of switch to tape up. I did have a look around to see whether there was, but nope! Thanks for the information - I think you may have mentioned Kev to me before. I am not going to be able to repair the motherboards without some assistance. I fixed the Ridge Racer set, but it was a simple repair job swapping a set of roms for a spare set. This might turn out to be more complicated, plus the USA boards will take a while to get here and might be in just as bad shape. You're more than welcome to have a look if no joy comes of the spare set Thanks!
LOL, and just as I was about to say that I'm glad to hear you think you have things under control! See how the new boardset goes. If it boots with problems, maybe you can swap boards over. If not, I don't mind having a look, or you'll probably find someone on JAMMA+ if you'd rather someone more local had a look.
BTW, I think Dreamdvd might take a look for you. He has a Hang On cab. He doesn't come on JammaPlus any more though (other than the IRC channel) due to a falling out. I can ask him for you and get you in touch, though. Other than that, there's Kev if he'll agree, and a few more members. The guy recommended could be good. I dunno what his prices are like, but I've seen quotes of £60 per board from others! And if not, I can do it if I can work out how to put it in Out Run (if my friend agrees) or my JAMMA rig.
Blimey we are all still awake then? I didn't expect to be as I was out 10 pin bowling earlier on with the kids. Came home shattered and thought 'Great, an early night' but my son has only just fallen asleep at 1am!!! He's got a cold coming on I think... I've emailed that Mark dude about the boards and asked for a rough quote. £60 per board would be about the sort of price I'd have expected tbh, but as I have 2 motherboards and 2 audio boards... groan! It would be good to get a confirmation on the actual issue(s) so I'd be willing to send them down for you to have a look if you were able to do so?
