There's something North of Scotland? :110: Umm, isn't that the North Pole? lol! Glad to hear it's arrived. Let me know how you get on. I saw my friend with the Out Run cab the other day, by the way. I sorted several of his boards, and am going round again to help him have a big sort out, labelling session and work out what we need to order to get all his boards running 100%. I didn't get a chance to ask, but I don't think he'd have a problem with me sticking the Hang On board in the Out Run cab if you need me to take a look.
Well the weather turned really nasty, wet, overcast and snowy so in the end we didn't go as far as we'd hoped. We decided to just test some equipment before we start filming my brother's history & horror trails. The cheap JVC HD camera was okay in good lighting, but the second the clouds rolled in the low level lighting left it looking like budget VHS film lol. We were in a hurry to finish up as it was raining, but it taught us two things. I need to order that Canon XL and I also need a lighting rig (even just some powerful lights from a DIY store) and a tent to make sure the equipment doesn't get exposed to the elements. This is totally off the thread topic, but my brother had found a brilliant location. It was an opened crypt in the middle of Perthshire. It was completely covered in what looked like vines & ivy. Made for an excellent location. Back on topic. Thanks! I'll sort out the monitor this week and then look at the boards. The monitor is acting up. If the safety cut off is by-passed, it runs, but it's darker than it should be. With the safety back in place it cuts out. The chassis looks in very good condition though, better than expected. Don't want to expose myself to x-ray lol, so treading carefully.
Sounds like a good location. Shame about the weather, but I guess you learn from that! Pity about the monitor, but it sounds fixable. Hopefully you'll be able to get something out of all the bits you've got now!
It was a fantastic location. I got some really good shots and audio, but it might need re-doing with a far better camera later on. Call it an audition! One strange thing with the audio I recorded to MD. It sounds perfectly fine on MD, I used Audacity to import the audio, edit it and convert it to MP3. I then threw it into Garageband to put together a podcast. Now, using a couple of the effects in Garageband I can really pull my brother's voice upwards and out from the background noises from the location, but sometimes the wind was very strong and the leaves above us made a right rustling noise. Prior to dumping it in GB it was fine, but for some odd reason it's taken on a completely new quality. Will have to try and do something about it later on. Too tired to care right now...
Sounds like you encoded it at too low a bitrate. Low bitrates are OK for spoken voice, but if you have background noise such as wind, it won't like it so much.
Also, effects can have unwanted.... well, effects on background noises. You could try filtering out the background noise, but that in itself can lead to funny sounds.
I've used an effect in GB called 'Podcast Male voice' to really pull my brother's voice from the surrounding noise. The location was perfect for filming, but perhaps we choose the wrong day lol. The wind was howling, the rain was pelting down, the temperature dropped and we had snow. We were sheltering in a crypt (as you do!) with no roof. Above the branches were all creaking and swaying in the wind and leaves on the ivy vines were making a great deal of noise. I think there may be a repeat run in the next few months, but at least we have started. It's was a bit like 'Stephen King 101'.
The problem with custom filters is you don't always know what they're doing. Sometimes you can be better off knowing what it does (fx tweaks, gating, cut-off, reverb, delay, filtering etc.) and doing it yourself. I've seen it before using a dehisser. It got rid of the hiss fine, but there was a horrible ducking left on the track. And some of the really bad hiss became what sounded like the sea! Quite! It's this week now :110: lol
Handed the monitor over to a TV repair guy before I end up irradiating myself. Cannot find the problem. It works, but only if the protection system is disabled. Then when re connected it cuts off. So, rather than damage my eyesight or whatever, I've let someone look at it. He agreed, the chassis was actually in great condition under the grime. He couldn't immediately see the problem either and has had the monitor for a week now so I shall call and find out. As soon as I get it back I can start on Hang On and test whether the boards that came from the USA are viable or not.... just tapping my toes!
...but you reported that there was nothing to report. Surely that means you had something to report, even if it was nothing? :110:
Technically speaking of course you are correct. As status reports go, then nothing to report is sufficient to warrant a report being posted up. So consider yourselves informed of the current situation. Aka nothing has happened. Tune in next week, where I shall most likely report on whether any further non-movement has occurred of not. End of report.
Status: Having trouble finding the chassis parts required to get the monitor even safe enough to test.
It's still sitting over at the TV repair place. I won't touch it without the safety on, which keeps kicking off. I'll find out for you as it's not the original.
I'm now waiting for a replacement screen, but I have been offered a fantastic trade on this unit and accepted it. I'm taking a part exchange on a Taito Egret IIs, which is going to be imported from Japan for Insert Coin '09 this summer. So, I'll get this Hang On cleaned up, hopefully into some form of functional condition and then send it down to Northampton.
