That would be nice but wont happen (at least from this team) as if you read the the kickstarter page they say... Are there plans for the HD versions of Shenmue 1 & 2? The property rights for Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 belong to SEGA, so we are not in a position to comment on that. Again from the kickstater page... Is this game affiliated with SEGA? SEGA has officially given us the rights to use the "Shenmue" license.
I'm pretty sure Yu will get outside funding (though the Kickstarter could raise like $5 million easy now, given that it crashed the site last night). But look at all the things they're doing right. The digital copy isn't the same price as the retail version (a nit I've been picking for years now) No higher tier for the manual (I keep seeing that, and it's irksome). Though having non-English subtitles as stretch goals is kinda weird.
It's obvious that SEGA gave the green light for Yu to use the Shenmue license, but this doesn't explain the lack of SEGA's branding anywhere during the presentation and Kickstarter campaign. After RYU's inclusion in SSASR and the hand-out of the forklift figurine and later the F4F figures, it feels weird that SEGA has such an hands-off approach on the actual development of III.
Do you really think they'll make this game with just 2 million dollars? The original game costed over 40 million dollars! http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertc...ickstarter-but-the-original-cost-70m-to-make/ This is probably a strategy for Sony. They're not exactly great financially lately, so they make a deal with the developer, promising funds if the game is succesfully kickstarted (which they obviously know it will). The whole industry and media talk about it, helping the marketing and more devs to think about this process. Honestly, it's almost the same thing they did with Grim Fandando and Street Fighter V. Since they and Activision are so friendly now (because of Black Ops 3), i hope we see something like this for Crash Bandicoot on this year's PlayStation Experience.
Number of fans ask that Shenmue 3 be crowdfunded -> Shenmue 3 gets Kickstarter -> People complain Shenmue got Kickstarter I'm massively excited, as we all should be. Now we even get a hand in helping bring it to fruition. I doubt Shenmue 3 will raise less than 4 or 5 million dollars by the end.
I never said this, all i said was how is this any different from getting alpha access in games, albeit they at least have a game you can play. I just personally feel its stupid because of the fact your'e handing over money for the sake of hyping a game up. But your its their money so who am i to say what to do with it
+1 Also, @Kappa , there is some sort of early access, as some of the reward tiers give you access to an early demo. And you don't have to back/fund the project and then pay again for the game, all of the rewards include at least a digital copy of the game (except the first one which is only $5).
Well, you are spot on. This is exactly what it is all about, hyping the game. As much as Shenmue is a loved franchise, i don't think it was a big financial success. I might be wrong but i think the first game sold less than 500.000 copies in the US. Now come back to today's gaming industry. In 2013, Square Enix complained that Tomb Raider reboot sold "just" over 3 million copies. Capcom says if a game doesn't sell 2 million copies, it's not worth it. See my point? Who would throw money at Yu Suzuki to make Shenmue3 if there's no proven interest and hype? People asking for it on the internet forums doesn't mean anything. Showing up and putting 2 million on the table in less than 24h proved it's worth doing it. Also, for $29 those helping hyping it, get a digital copy for PC or PS4. I think it's a great deal, specially since the game will probably retail at 60 dollars.I never played Shenmue that much (never owned a DC), so it doesn't affect me as much. But i bet there's people that donated and are in the same situation. But like i said, if Sony does something like this with Crash Bandicoot, i'm all over it. Specially if they get help from Mark Cerny and Naughty Dog.
How much do you think those rights are anymore? Crash hasn't been relevant in years. Doesn't Activision have the Crash IP until 2021?
Sony new relationship with Activision, with the Black Ops 3 Beta and exclusive DLC stuff, might help this.
Very true. Let's hope after Uncharted 4 ships we can get some Crash Bandicoot love. I'd be completely on board for that.
Outside funding for Shenmue III you say? http://gematsu.com/2015/06/sony-partner-shenmue-iii-development
Here is the interview that was on Sony's livecast where Sony said they were using Kickerstarter to gauge demand for Shenmue 3. http://www.twitch.tv/playstation/v/6249998?t=57m1s
Kind of like Bloodstained. Why not do kickstarter, when old man CEOs think Cellphones are the wave of the future, it's best to go right to the people and let them vote with their wallets in advance.
So basically, there is nothing developed and the trailer is just to boost intereset. Well that is nice, that means that the game will have a proper development circle. ps: Let's now begin a kickstarter for Shenmue Online.
I just think that Shenua and Ryo felt different in the demo, caucasian-er than they used to be. I hope this is fixed before release. Anyways this is A GREAT NEWS!
