I agree with you. Sega doesn´t use its game licenses and catalog as they should. Sonic seems to be the only thing they care about nowadays.
I wonder what they'll do about the arcade games. Are they going to make some kind of deal with Sega, or use other games, etc?
Sonic Boom and the recent Angry Birds thing* could be used as evidence to suggest that Sega doesn't care about Sonic, but rather promotes animal abuse! I'll refrain from writing similar hyperbolic comments that have probably all been said by others and raise a few personal points concerning Shenmue III... 1. While it's great that YSNet has a passionate, sympathetic development team like Shibuya Productions on board, I would love to see more familiar names involved. I'm sure Shin Ishikawa and Keiji Okayasu wouldn't turn down the chance to reunite with their former AM2 leader on such a high profile opportunity to give their fans closure on a most beloved series. Also, there's little doubt the soundtrack would benefit massively from having Takenobu Mitsuyoshi as its director. 2. Concepts such as funding via Kickstarter, using Unreal Engine 4 and collaborating with an obscure, Monaco-based company seem about as alien as it's possible to get for someone of Yu Suzuki's background - are the usual avenues now really that closed off to him, or has 15 years of inactivity and failed projects irreparably tarnished his reputation in Japan? 3. One of the features promised to return is arcade mini games, but what will these end up being? I'm torn between three ideas. After Burner II, OutRun and Space Harrier would be welcome at the very least, though I'd also like to see Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing included for the significance of how the latter inspired the former, which then evolved into Shenmue. On the other hand, this could be a great chance for perfect console versions of Virtua Fighter 3 and SCUD Race at last. 4. Continuing on from the previous point, Sega's involvement seems limited to providing original Dreamcast era assets and licensing out the Shenmue name. Still, I'd like to see further assistance. Since this is probably the last we'll see of Shenmue for a very long time, it would be a great chance for more Saturn prototype footage as bonus content or even something from whatever AM2 had produced back in the day on this console's successor. Suzuki mentioned "The Old Man and the Peach Tree" last year during his GDC presentation, so how about we finally get to see this even earlier test material? Presumably these could be realised through stretch goals in a limited collector's edition of Shenmue III. *I won't even bring myself to write out the correct name of this game. The taste of vomit in the back of my throat is something I prefer to avoid, thank you.
Champion Boxing would have greater relevance, considering it was Yu Suzuki's first game for Sega and (sort of) ties in with the overall martial arts theme... I'm surprised this hasn't been included in a Shenmue arcade sooner, actually!
Again, it says on their Kickstarter page that other platforms are undecided, and Sony has said themselves that it is a third party release. Sony may be helping fund it, but anyone who followed Microsoft during the 360 years knows that means absolutely nothing about indefinite exclusivity.
Time will tell if you're right or if I'm right. I hope you're right about Cuphead not staying excluisve, I am not spending $350 just for one indie game.
My opinion is that Sega is not willing to provide HD remaster or ultimate versions of their arcade games. They may consider arcade games not like best sellers. I kind of agree with them but still would like to get my hands on these if one day they decide to release them again on the current gen. But Sega is known for bad decisions and stupid marketing so I´m quite desperate to see the Big Sega getting back on track and release a new console one day (I´m a fan of Saturn and Dreamcast). I want a fight between Nintendo, Sony and Sega but I know it is not going to happen (I don´t like Microsoft except for the nice network interface and reliable code behind to play multiplayer modes).
It all depends on what Sony agree in terms of the level of funding. It will either be a timed exclusive or a console exclusive. I personally hope it is not a PS4 exclusive because the game will probably need the sales a multi-platform release would provide.
Seeing as the PS4 is the best selling platform right now and it's going to be on PC, I think it'll sell just fine.
The announcement of a possible release has caused a spike in the re-sale market of Shenmue 1 & 2. I loved both on the Dreamcast, I doubt they be able to replicate it on the current-gen. Some titles are best left alone.
I really just want to know how the story ends. We've been waiting for almost 14 years. I want to know Ryo Hazuki's ultimate fate.
I've had a look this evening and seen PAL copies of the first two Shenmue games appearing on eBay for over £300 each - where was all this attention when the Dreamcast needed it the most back in 2001? I wouldn't even be surprised if the final number of Kickstarter donors exceeds the amount who bought into this series originally, and I'm pleased there's been a reappraisal of sorts as it's been quite the influence on other developers... I've even seen comments suggesting that Yu Suzuki's creation of the FREE label effectively birthed what later became the open world genre. Also, while Sega had previously experimented with the QTE input method with Die Hard Arcade, it was Shenmue that really made this a familiar gameplay mechanic. My other half's recently been playing through two of Quantic Dream's two games for the PS3 (Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls), and along with the God of War franchise it seems as if Shenmue really was inspiring. Maybe the time is now right for it to get the kind of wider success it deserves? As for how the story will end for Ryo, I suspect that avenging his father and taking down Lan Di won't even be the climax. If anything, he'll probably spare the life of his father's killer, forcing the dissolution of the Chi You Men. Furthermore, based on the Project Berkley era CG video and the "floating sword" cliffhanger, I wouldn't even be surprised if Xiuying returns with further supernatural elements. Perhaps we may even see a dragon or phoenix literally take flight? During the GDC conference last year, I got the impression Shenmue is a four-part arc, with the battle against Lan Di followed by a period of Ryo starting over with Shenhua. On the other hand, wasn't it suggested that Xiuying's brother was Lan Di? Perhaps she will be the one to make him reconsider the path he has taken, causing the leaders of the Chi You Men and even Ryo to evaluate their lives? One thing I can be sure of is that Suzuki recently suggested Ryo won't return to Japan until long after this confrontation. Whatever happens, I can't wait for it!
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...-million-to-make-a-truly-open-world-shenmue-3 So what exactly do you want from us, Mr. Suzuki? There's quite a difference between $2m and $10m, you know!
It's quite obvious, the 2M was just to get his foot in the door. With the 2M secured we at least get "a" Shenmue III, and hopefully more funding will follow giving Yu the chance to make the game without compromise.
Yes, "seriousky". Shenmue may not have the best story ever, but I think it's interesting, and I want to know how it ends. If you know exactly what the plot of Shenmue III will be, then feel free to share it with everyone.
