UK members, you still have a chance according to Eurogamer: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...iversary-edition-consoles-for-just-19-94-each UPDATE 2: Sony UK boss Fergal Gara has told Eurogamer that the company will sell more PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition consoles online to UK customers from Monday, 15th December - at the normal price of £399 of course. 80 per cent of the volume allocated to the UK will be sold online, he told Eurogamer at the opening of the PlayStation '94 retro shop in London this morning. Given the shop had just shy of 200 units to sell, around 800 units will be available online to buy next week. "This is a three-day celebration here in London," he said, "But it wouldn't be fair to our fans across the country if there wasn't access available to them as well. "We're very conscious of fairness. While it's nice to be able to celebrate here with a retro store, it is the thin end of the volume." However, once this initial batch of consoles is sold, that's your lot. Gara told us there are no plans to make more units. "There's no plan as yet," he said. "The volume is a close match with the original production run on PlayStation, so it's got a nice heritage story. They're very rare and they're very special. If you put it into mass production you dilute that. So right now, that's it. I'm not aware of any plans to change that." Thursday and Friday's allocation of PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition consoles is now sold out, Sony said. These are the consoles due to be sold at the PlayStation '94 shop tomorrow and Friday.
Does anyone else get the feeling Sony's deliberately leading journalists off the scent and planning another store elsewhere within the UK, preferably this time allowing real PlayStation fans to piece together subtle clues rather than having their well-intentioned 20th anniversary promotional campaign hijacked by scalpers tipped off courtesy of the gaming media? If you know where to look, I might be able to point a few lucky people in the right direction, though I don't yet have any kind of idea as to when they'd do such a thing... even if it's all for nothing, my research will continue until we know otherwise for certain! What harm can there be from pursuing this?
The problem with promotional events is that they're still open to the scalpers and only open to a small geographical number of people. I remember Capcom did an treasure hunt with brain-teasing clues in London for the release of Resident Evil 5 by hiding a number of fake body parts around the city centre which supposedly ran from 7am, but obviously teams of people just spent the night following Capcom employees around seeing where they were hiding the parts. To be honest, I've spent my money on other stuff this month to the point that even if I was able to get hold of one, I'd probably have to sell it to make it to the end of the month.
Sony already bought the IP from whatever company was flogging the franchise's corpse. edit: Apparently they didn't even though it was reported by some news sites. Shows how much I care about Crash Bandicoot.
I'm guessing the UK online orders will be fulfilled within minutes of being available next week. I'd like to get one, but doubt I'll manage to. Probably see a bunch turn up on ebay.
There's quite a few on eBay UK now, all listed at very optimistic prices. They're mostly listed at £2000 or more... not sure why the sellers think they're worth that much.
Probably as a few completed listings shows people are paying £3k or more. Here's one for just over £2k, and the guy has stated he bought it from the pop up store in London (i.e. at £19.94). Asshole.
With exorbitant prices being paid for this model I can understand that the majority of those who were lucky enough to obtain one, are inclined to sell. C'mon it's hard for one to justify keeping such an PS4, seeing you can buy a regular model + a whole lotta games when re-selling the ann-model.
I really wish there was something that Sony could do about the prices on eBay - just getting each of the scalpers to donate £19.94 to charity would sit better with me, though as someone who has spent years being professionally involved with various organisations in a voluntary capacity, I'd prefer if these idiots (and I'm not one to use such strong words lightly) were forced to give up any profit they've made from what is effectively a campaign that many now look back on negatively. As a promotional tool, selling a limited edition system for a bargain might have originally seemed like a fantastic gift "for the players," but it's now clear that Sony has no intention of doing anything to regain control of the very situation it created. Even if the company has no plans to try curbing the exploitation of its initial generosity, it's still a smack in the face of its fans elsewhere around the UK who have no way of getting to the London store that is currently open. For example, why not set up a similar pop-up shop in somewhere like Leeds or Liverpool? As cities with great travel connections and plenty of links to the PlayStation's history, further opportunities for more enthusiasts to join in on the 20th anniversary celebrations would be welcome, not to mention bringing attention to other places than the Greater London area. Didn't Fergal Gara promise fairness in a comment just yesterday? The present state is hardly fair! I might be a little biased in naming Leeds first as a possible example, though you can't deny there are many reasons that Sony could yet use to incorporate into their overall marketing. For starters, the city is locally referred to as The London of The North, plus it has a district named Little London! Also, it's not as if Sony hasn't opened similar short term stores here before - their music division caused mayhem last year by having a 24-hour retail presence for one of its biggest acts, while Rockstar and Psygnosis had local studios there. Additionally, for the launch of Metal Gear Rising, a huge mural was painted on the side of buildings in both Leeds and Liverpool, along with London. I can't speak for the other two, but the Leeds piece remains to this day. Finally, the city's tallest skyscraper is frequently compared architecturally with the original design of a certain iconic Sony console. Really, this whole affair is a sorely missed opportunity that could still be rectified... Do all 800 of the remaining PS4s allocated to the UK really need to be sold exclusively online? Sony has the resources, infrastructure and precedent to pull off something truly special for the rest of this country instead of just treating us like second rate citizens. Still, it's probably for the best they don't bother, as enough damage has already been done over the last few hours. I reckon it's going to be a long time before we see another campaign like this one, unfortunately.
I get the feeling the ones that have 'sold' have been 'bought' by upset people who disagree with the scalping, and have no intention of paying. I can't believe anyone would spend that much when all the possibilities of getting one at RRP haven't gone yet, so I'm inclined to think they haven't really sold. You can see some of them were re-listed anyway.
Just an update, I just received an email from Sony on the shipping information; not shipped, yet, but looks like it'll ship by Dec. 22! Looks like it's happening.
Congratulations! The Netherlands (Belgium included I believe) get a 110 units to be won in a hunt which starts the 20th and ends 21st of December. You need to appear in cosplay of your favorite character. Too bad I'm working during that weekend..
Thank you! I'm soo excited. I heard about that competition; it sounds a bit extreme! I wouldn't even have a costume to participate in. Don't lose hope, there can be other venues for obtaining one. Pocket-lint is giving away a couple, but I don't know if there are any global restrictions? http://www.pocket-lint.com/competit...0th-anniversary-edition-consoles-up-for-grabs Spain only has about 375 units I believe, I could be wrong. The die hard people willing to pay for one are already willing to pay scalpers, so it's probably for the best to use this auction style for so few units. I think Sony should have produced more of these!
One question, is supposed to be Tama (one of the first PS/Saturn games) the first ball-tilt-labyrinth-puzzle of all times? I mean, these classic mobile game to test the motion sensors.
What? Well, I guess I'll be spending tomorrow revising Playstation game characters. Pity I've be at a train station when the first clue is tweeted tomorrow http://community.eu.playstation.com...dbpr=347877311&emcid=social_20141212_37204447
