Just wondered if any of you have been following the E3 and what you make of the new WiiU will you be wanting one, or do we have enough HD consoles at the moment that are all capable of running the same stuff?

Apologies fi this is in the wrong section, its just me thinking out loud

"We just got word from the folks at Kotaku that Nintendo game designer Katsuya Eguchi has revealed the Wii U's proprietary disc format will hold up to 25GB of data."

    http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/07/the-wiiu-nintendos-next-console/

So no Blu-Ray? It amazes me every time Nintendo bring out a new console, they ether go with an outmoded data storage method or concoct some ridiculous over complicated storage format, apart from the wii, though you have to piggy back onto a friggin' boot disc to get the damn thing to play DVD videos I hear (WTF?).

Just my opinion there, I won't be queuing up to buy one. But if I know Nintendo, whatever they're offering probably won't be what I'm looking for personally in a games console.

I loved the SNES, but the N64 was a real turn off for me. Obviously it had a clutch of great games. But the system was, for me, ill positioned to deliver the games I wanted. Me and Nintendo parted back then, and I've never since been tempted by any of their offerings.

That's just my story with Nintendo, not trying to bash them for anyone else!

I was expecting a little more. I still feel like Nintendo will be a generation behind when PS4 and Xbox3 come out in the next few years. I'll let you know in a year or two when I'm doing exploring every knook and cranny of Skyrim. haha

Storage is Single layer Blu-ray (25GB) (Panasonic provide disc player since the gamecube and is part of Blu-ray consortium they wont reinvent the wheel for Nintendo), they won't called it Blu-Ray cause they don't want to pay Blu-ray fee. Just like their is no DVD logo on Wii disc.

Everyone allready own a Blu-ray player, either stanalone or PS3 so I don't see the point to complaint about it not playing blu-ray movies.

Anyway it's the streaming age, who still use physical media for watching movies :p

You know, it looks kind of cool. I'd like to get it, but I'm not super psyched.

Things that would make me immediately favour it over Microsoft's next console would be:

    - If it's region free
    - If Ace Combat is exclusive to it
    - If good RPGs are available for it
    - If there are good shooters and 2D stuff
    - If it has the best market for downloadable games (Virtual Console and XBLA style stuff)

But none of these seem even remotely likely. I'm still very probably going to get it, but not at launch, and not before knowing the other next-gen consoles.

I got the Wii at launch. Not a wise decision, but I don't really regret it. It's a very noble console to own, and the few good games it has make it worth it.

Hell, It's worth owning the Wii just for Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime Corruption, but it's got at least 5 other great games. More than enough.

That and the Homebrew Channel make it good enough for me.

So I expect at the very least that from Wii U. But I'll wait cautiously for the release. Seems too promising to actually deliver all that I saw in the conference, and that EA endorsement is very unsettling.

The region thing will be something they REALLY have to think about.
region coding makes piracy even more likely, when will gaming companies understand this? I'm still support them if I buy a perfectly legal copy from Asia.

Anyway, the controller seems a bit weird, if you want to game with a an iPad sized controller, I'd start to get cramps in my hands.

I have no interest at all in the system. More gimmicky crap IMO. Ever since the SFC, Nintendo hasn't done it for me and any game that I did like on their systems after the SFC was mostly 3rd party as well. You just wait and see. this will turn out to be another Wii family machine. Not for the real gamer at all.

    • Controller is chunky as hell.
    • How much for a second controller... $199?
    • Name sucks
    • No Blu-ray
    • If you've got a TV, why would you want a screen on your controller.
    • Aimed at people who play games for 10mins per week.
    • After initial regurgitated AAA titles... shovelware will follow.
So no, I don't think I'll be getting it.

As a fake gamer I will get this one on launch like all my others systems.

I enjoyed quite the same amount of PS3 and Wii games. Games like Zelda, Metroid, Mario, DK Country and Smash Bros. will allway make Nintendo system an automatical buy for me.

I did got a PS3 too because I did wanted to enjoy some HD gaming with games like Final Fantasy, Soul Calibur, GT5, MGS4.....

Third partys seam like to be ready to fully support Nintendo again with the addition of 1080p, 25GB and from what I understand better online support (hopefully).

So I'm hoping the support from third party for the WiiU will be enough so I don't need to get two system again for the next generation.

I'm interested in what they will call this media. Also would it be possible to handle a dual layer style disc format to add more space? I use my consoles to game first. Streaming entertainment is nice since it can all be on one place but I think Netflix and possibly others will take the market by storm since a broadband connections are easy to get these days. So long as there are no addition fees involved other than the subscription you pay to each respective service. I think Nintendo will have a good media device as well as a gaming device in 2012. If they will allow the use of other media formats as well such as .mkv xvid and others would be amazing. Probably not but still it would a huge plus.

I won't be buying this as Nintendo don't tend to supply me with the games I enjoy... and never really have done.

I have the 360 for my love of Cave shooters and NHL games, and the PS3 for wipeout and other HD goodness (and media).

There's nothing on the Wii that remotely interests me. I imagine this to follow suit.

I know for sure I'm going to be buying one. This time though I'm going to make better purchases. I ended up with a lot of titles I may never play with the Wii but this time around (if third party really pulls through) I may get a large library of titles and enjoy them all. It is too bad the Wii U will not upscale Wii games in anyway. From what I read of the hardware the system looks to be strong enough to do so. Still it sounds like the Wii U will do true HD and not the upscaled trick current gen consoles use. The only things I see missing are Virtual Console transfer and possible expanding VC market in 6th gen titles like Game Cube titles.

Things I'm looking forward to hearing are:

Detailed specs of the Wii U (Little is know of the CPU "Power7/Watson I believe" but nothing on the GPU front "other than it is AMD")
Hopefully the possibility to transfer VC titles.
Adding Game Cube titles to the VC as well as other consoles.

The whole gimmick is annoying. I mean, what happened to sitting on your couch and play some games? I think some companies are starting to loose some focus. The whole touchscreen thing on both the WiiU and PSVita seems just to atract Iphone / Smartphone users.

So far, i'm not interested on WiiU or PSVita. I'll focus on games for the PS3 and save some money.

As for region lock, it's pointless these days. Anyone can go online and buy a game from anywhere. You can play online with people from everywhere. 3DS region lock it's one of the dumbest things ever made by Nintendo.

The main reason i had to mod my previous consoles was to have the ability to play other regions games. I'm glad that on this gen Sony went region free. I still think it's one of the smartest decisions they made. I have PS3 games from all regions.

    Worried

I have a real love hate relationship with Nintendo. I mean I love Mario and Zelda games as much as the next guy but I absolutely despise the business side of the company.

Like this disc format they are using. Bluray. But they will call it WiiU optical disc or someshit just like the last two generations. It won't play real Blurays though or DVDs or even CDs though because Nintendo are the biggest tight asses in the industry.

The controller I hate and its not as innovative as the Wii's. Gimmick based. But I am happy that there will be no more of this waggling bullshit. I think the whole streaming thing so you don't need a TV solves what must be a very Japanese problem. Most western countries these days have as many TVs per household as people. Well thats just my experience. So you have the worst of both a home console and the worst of a portable in one.

I don't want a WiiU until I know exactly what it can do. I need to be confident that WiiU is really next gen and just not slightly better than PS3 and 360. Cause if they launch something that isn't way beyond PS3 when the PS4 launches they will be once again left in the dust. I realize this is a big ask as I am comparing technology companies to what has essentially become a glorified toy company. But whatever, surprise me Nintendo!

I believe Nintendo would really be better as a third party so we don't need to pay the Nintendo hardware tax every few years to enjoy a handful of great first party games. That will never happen of course, Nintendo are far too stubborn and have actually said they would rather close than make games for other companies hardware.

*Read this in a serious sarcastic voice*

Childhood obesity is a worldwide crisis, fatty foods and VIDEO GAMES effect this and is the main cause of it.

No I don't agree with the statement, but when the Wii came out there were all these current affairs showing how active the Wii is. Who really cares about swinging your arm around to play a game. Holding the Wiimote even makes my arm tired, I want to relax when playing a game not standing up in the centre of the room just to open a door or something.

    What has gaming become?

As for the 3DS region lock, it is the stupidest thing ever.. It's not really portable now is it? What if you travel a lot?

However, I might still be getting this system as I'm a gaming collector, and many of us are and would understand. The Wii isn't really a gaming system in my opinion, and either is the Wii U. Also does the controller look like a homemade portable console?

IMO the Wii U is the Wii they should have released to begin with. The Wii was always behind tech wise who ever thought at Nintendo that graphics doesn't matter they were clearly an idiot. Developers aren't going to spend time and money making a game for both the xbox 360 and ps3 and then downgrade it graphics wise for the Wii and add all the gimmicky controls in. This is why the Wii failed third party wise and its going to happen again when the new xbox comes out with the ps4. Considering the console probably won't come out for another year it's already going to be outdated tech

It seems like it may be in a Dreamcast-like position as far as possibly being more powerful, graphics-wise, than the current generation but then probably behind the next generation. I kinda doubt the fancy new controller is gonna fix that.

That said, I will probably buy one. The idea of playing a Mario game with above 360/PS3 graphics seems really cool.

I am a bit pissed that it is not Gamecube compatible. Can anyone confirm that?

I tried to tell people this .... but NOOOO. They were all too hyped over new motion games to sit back and realize that no-one really wants to exercise to play games. When you get home from work, the last thing you want to do is jump around the living room failing to get a basketball in a hoop.

Everyone I know who has bought one has either sold it by now or it sits around gathering dust waiting for a party.

Unfortunately with the WiiU, it not only comes with an uncreative name, but they'll market it like the missing link between home consoles and portable consoles that you MUST have to be cool amongst your friends.

Then the pin will drop and they'll question why they even bought it in the first place.
