My point exactly, take a nice piece of hardware and insert crippling bottlenecks in the form of gimmicks and sub-standard tech then dress it in kiddie tinsel. That seems to be the Nintendo way as far as I can see... It seems to work for them though. What they do to this system remains to be seen, but I'm sure there will be something wrong with it.
"WiiU"? Seriously? I'm more interested in finding a Nintendo 64, quite honestly. The more I see what the next generation offers, the more I continuously lose interest in it.
The name "Wii U" reminds me of that lady in Kung Pow. If you've seen the movie then you'll probably know what I'm talking about.
This just killed it for me. My god mutliplayer is the standard for consoles now. It's like taking a step back. I guess they figured most people play multiplayer online but my god. To quote the simpsons "Forbes called it the blunder of the century. A bit overblown, don't you think? What about New Coke?"
You realize you can still play multiplayer on it, right? It's just limited to one "new controller" (whatever it's called), but you can still play with multiple wiimotes.
I realize that but I don't want play with the wii motes I want play with the new controller. Plus imagine the possibilities multiplayer wise with that controller. Playing mario kart and picking which weapon you want use on the fly while you challenge your friend. Or if your playing a battleship like game you can make your moves on your screen without the other person seeing and watching the results on the tv. I mean design wise this is a huge blunder. Then again as it has happened sometimes in the past, nintendo might try to figure out a way to make multiple screens work. I understand that economically it is going to be hard to sell a controller that expensive by itself. But to just plain limit it to one is crazy. The comment saying that people could use their 3ds makes me speculate that it would be a good gimmick to sell more 3d's or that this controller would easily cost close $200 alone. Well they got a year ahead so let's see what happens.
Yeah, I agree, it is stupid. However, no matter how powerful it is, it takes a lot to run 3 or more separate, probably HD screens. I think that's probably why it's limited to one. I think they said at some point that the hardware isn't finalized, so maybe that'll change.
According to Iwata, "The console is not drastically different, and Wii U is about the controller. The console itself will be almost invisible." Hummm...
Oh, Oh, I know Mary Tyler Moore. That was the best video they could have shipped out with Windows 95.
The "features" I can live without... but what impresses me is that they're gonna use POWER7 CPUs. That's the same stuff that runs in IBM's (expensive and powerful) IBM pSeries servers and Watson. I have the luck of owning a POWER5-based workstation, even those (2 generations older) processors pack a major punch.
It seems they have learnt from some of their (Serious) mistakes commited on the Wii. Still, it would be a major bonehead move if it really is only one "New Controller" per system. I see that as highly unlikely, though. Will this revolutionise gaming? Quite unlikely. But it will influence and bring forth a lot of new ideas for games - which is what Nintendo generally does. They bring forth many of the ideas that will, at some point, become standard. Still, they also waste a lot of potential great use of their ideas, which is what might happen to 3DS and Wii U, and which is what happened to Wii and GBA-Gamecube connectivity, and... well, to everything they've touched, to some extent. Still, I'm very interested in this system. I'm not a fanboy, but I do seem to favour Nintendo's approach and enjoy their stuff.
I'm really concerned about the one controller per system issue. If they can't be used VMU-style for multiple people then much of the potential is lost. It also flies in the face of the social gaming angle that the Wii's success is predicated upon.
I think I can see what Nintendo is aiming at. The hardcore gamer seldom plays split screen games with another person in the room, heck the last time I played with a real live person on the couch with two controllers was back with Xmen Legends on the PS2. At my place I play alone or online, GF is the same we don't play together on the same system and we like it like that. That being said you could have a party machine i.e. Wii and then a machine for the solo player BUT we all know Nintendo doesn't work that way and the Wii is a dead man walking at this point, soon as the U is out the Wii is dead. No mention of Last Story at E3 confirms that for me. I don't think it's a wise move on their part but I can see the logic behind it regardless if it's questionable. I would also argue Nintendo knows the market better then Sony or MS i.e. a Zelda title will sell this much and Mario will sell that much but that's as far as I take it. just my two cents
This is defiantly not going to work. A pretty good idea but its going to be executed wrong if the price is not right. As people have stated above multiplayer is going to be ruined if one person has the Wii U controller and the other has the Wii remote. Pretty big disadvantage going on there. What bothers me is it looks like there's too much going off, like in the trailer they used both the Wii U controller and the Wii remote which has me thinking the system is going to come with them both? Has me thinking will developers favor one controller over the other? Urghh too tired to even think.
things will work themselves out, don't you worry kids. You can still use the Wii U controller as a TV screen and play multi on it with up to four Wii Remotes.
