In these times of new hype waves moving across the net I think it would be a good idea to make a recount of every lie sony's PR lab has said to us since the PSX era. Post the lie along with the source (if available) and any other stuff (photos, videos, mag scans) you got.
I have this foreign mag with tons of shit that never became true. Is ironic they are trying to copy Live now, cuz they also did it with the SegaNet concept of the Dreamcast using this vaporware from AOL. After the internet bubble exploded they just trow away everything....
Every company lies, every game console during launch claims alot of things, and at times falls through and never happends. Proclaiming Sony is the only one guilty of this is bit narrow-minded.
Heh, I remember the Nintendo-centric magazines in Mexico in the early 90s. They lied SO much you ended up hating SEGA like there actually were a war and they were the other country. The SnesCD, for example, is one of the most incredible lies ever. Coincidentally, Sony was involved. The N64 as well, offered so many things that it did not deliver... Looking back, seeing MegaCD and PCE games, and whatnot, I wonder what could have been, had nintendo's lies been true. But I guess we'll never know. I'm still hoping the current PS3 design is a lie... but that's no longer very likely.
its funny, but some of the feature in the current xbox live such as d/l demos, paying actual money for car parts and such, were ideas sony always talked about and somewhat deomonstrated at panels and trade shows for ps2. Of course like every add on they got, they abandoned support for network and hdd pretty fast. I really do belive they handled the hdd extremely poorly.
Oh, of course every console manufacturer lies... I'm going to be equal oppertunity here... I'll bash microsoft, Sony, and Sega (for some reason, Nintendo doesn't really like me, so i don't get their press releases...) Did you know that the Sega Dreamcast will support high definition video up to 1080i at launch? (Sega Dreamcast Official Preview Guide). Um... no. The Xbox Advangage: The Xbox will feature a massive 128 megabytes of memory! (Official Xbox Magazine Special Edition: The Xbox Advantage) Xbox has 64 meg of ram, at least at the retail level. Save your games to the built in hard drive or use it to organize and store nearly unlimited game saves! (Official Xbox Magazine Special Edition: The Xbox Advantage). Uh... no... never... I don't think so... Certanly not officially supported anyway... Every Xbox game out there will switch automaticly to 480p resolution. (Official Xbox Magazine Special Edition: The Xbox Advantage). Not all xbox games support 480p I'll try to dig up some more later... Gamecube broadband adapter, i'm looking at you!
or better yet, the comicon before xbox was released. Various people were asking the microsoft representives there wheter or not it would be able to play dreamcast games, and they said it definetly would. Sadly 90% of people there belived that bs. Or who could forget when they said the ps2 was powerful enough to be used for a weapons program. I look back now and im shocked the ps2 was ever considered that powerful in the first place.
I wouldn't call these claims lies exactly, more like hype. Things that if you were God and wanted to make a game machine you would do. The idea being of course to generate lots and lots of hype so your launch is sucessful. Most of this stuff is made up by journalists, who hear a rumor or something. Too bad no console ever really lives up to the hype and speculation. One I remeber from the snes days, someone told me a rumor that you could pause the game, focus in on any sprite, and rotate it around in all directions to see all sides of it. Seems like hype built around mode 7, but I doubt any Nintendo company person actually started that rumor on purpose.
Exactly, every company does it. Some more than others, but no one is innocent of this practice. If the companies themselves didn't get excited and act like their product was going to be the biggest and best thing ever released, how could they expect anyone else to think it. If Sony(or MS, Nintendo, whoever) says that they are releasing something that won't be as powerful as "_______" Then the consumers will get the feeling early on that it is already an inferior product.
What about Bungie? Halo 2 was so hyped up, but they couldnt deliver on everything they promised. I know a lot of it was rumors that somehow got posted as "official news" on certain Xbox sites, but damn. Thats why Im not aniticipating Halo 3 (whenever it comes out). Sure, I'll get it, but I wont be as enthusiastic as Halo 2's launch. I might get enthused in Bungie themselves announce something that interests me, like bots and a mapmaker for instance. Hype is ok sometimes, in small doses. Too much hype and you'll be dissappointed. Too little hype and probably no one besides an indie or Hardcore gamer would notice it.
Thats not a coincidence, thats a conspiracy! Its kind of creepy. What if the Government hires people to do this? Or the police? Etc.? So wait, 5 posts an hour and 50 identities??? I think all they need to register on are the huge networks... Anyways, I wonder when they sleep? That sounds like a fun job but I bet it pays really shittily and the hours are horrible.
Even funnier is this, I read in an old Gamesmaster back in the days where they really were a magazine I liked. That one of the PS2 machines would be able to play LP´s and it wasn´t an April fools issue.
THat is so true but nobody talks as much crap as Sony ! They are well known for talking crap which of course all the idiots fall for. I really do hope the PS3 falls on it's arse but of course we know it won't :-( Yakumo
Or, maybe Sony have learnt a lesson for giving false promises. So now with the ps3, we just have no info at all! Seriously nobody seems to know anything really apart from some specs and some vague design. Sony themselves has actually given us no promises to break at this point! Just a lot of hype from very vague sources and hearsay. I think that a lot of damage done to Sony is by people repeating rumor all the time, the weight of all the fanboy energy over time gives you a false impression and expectation. But yeah the industry is full of crap hype, nobody is particularly to blame over other companies. I think it is pretty easy to see through the spin these days. However I must add that I did get swept along with the hype of the ps2, I flew out to Japan for the launch and got one from a tiny place in akiba. I honestly thought that it was going to be a supercomputer, I really did. I even remember playing old psone games with (very slightly) improved textures and thinking that it was revolutionary! Ahh how innocent I was, I didn't even have the internet back then. And I will admit - I totally fell for it. I never feel that sony misled me on anything either, I was just not aware enough to see through it for myself.
