HEAVILY EDITED

this is the current situation, so far everything is at an halt since we are waiting for any word from Kevin, for resolving some issues about the usage of the assembler names, and forums, and whatever else can come out. people are willingly to participate and buy the magazine that is supposed to be out in october.

concerning the magazine we are aiming to create a 3 montly magazine with 36 pages probably in full color (cost dependant). people are ofering money to kep us going and even asking to be sponsors with their web pages but for now everything is under ice :) not for long i hope!

for more infos surf this thread again

EDITED AGAIN

FOR NOW TALKS AND WORKS ON THE MAGAZINE WILL MOVE TO:

for not making the live in this General Gaming board crowded by topics concerning the magazine... for now things are like that and might change in the future, but as we NEEDED to start somehow for now it'll be so

I think it's an interesting idea, and I would be in to help. Back about five years ago I used to be an editor and writer (and printer, graphics manager, distributor, etc; I think I was the only one that took it serious) for my HS newspaper (No, it's okay...you can stop the fanfare and fireworks). So, obviously I have no "professional" experience. If nothing else, I can give praise! (or $20)

Could we add stuff like opinion columns? and what about a "what if..." section for the stuff that never came out?

BTW, I'm not going to be the mail guy...

So first we need to see how long we want to make it. If we go with that deal from dreamweaver press (link in the other thread) then that's 36 pages.

Seeing if everyone who contributes writes at least one article, if we get a lot of people we may need to cut or combine articles together.

So I propose we should make a list of who's in and what they want to write about. What type of stuff do we want to put in? What's the general tone of the zine?

If we go with a small print run ($200 or so) I'll put in $50 myself. Keep in mind chances are we won't end up making the money back (maybe if Kevin decides to sell it on the site we would.) So if you decide to contribute money expect to eat the loss.

Anyway it might also help if we set a deadline for all material to be submitted, say two months from now? That gives plenty of time for people to think up stuff and get it ready. Also there should be a page limit on articles (1-2 pages, excepting the main article which would be longer and get the cover.)

Possible articles - What's some of the questions new people ask here all the time? Unreleased games? M2 stuff? Just a few suggestions.

I'm crap at articles, but more than willing to spellcheck/grammarcheck/proofread for people. Perhaps an idea could be to translate to other languages, once the english is done. I'm sure French and spanish could be done moderately easy considering the nationalities of some of our members, and perhaps after a few others. Probably keeping English as the only "published" copy, with the others available as PDFs

Seconded, I'm more than happy to proof-read but I probably have zilch in terms of true obscurities to be written about. Saying that, I might be able to russle up an article about the A'can games I've got, if that's uncommon enough. Though Sound-about is probably the true resource on that topic...

Whoa, is going to be a paper version? not digital?

Dunno, what about distribution deals? how are we going to put these mags in the street?

I saw we do either a PDF version or an online version.

About articles and such, we could publish them here in the forum in a members-only thread, then vote which ones are cool and go into the mag, or which ones are crap and wont be used.

Paper>digital in every way. A hard copy of such a magazine I have huge interest in, a pdf not so much.

I can contribute $20. Also I could put together an article about the xbox launch team special editions. I'm not sure if those are obscure enough for inclusion or not, but since I know little about dev items that is all I would feel comfortable writing about. I think the 2 month deadline is quite reasonable as well.

K, but how you plan to handle distribution? or is going to be by mail only?

Maybe if hype pick ups after the first editions we could struck a deal with a game store chain like EB games to sell them in every location they have.

You know, so more people can get it...

Distribute magazines full of info about "confidential" dev kits, etc, through gaming chain stores like EB games? LOL! Very slim chance...

I have to agree with some people though; I would prefer a hard copy rather than a digital, although it is nice to have a PDF laying around. At least the quality stays the same after a few years, unlike paper.

Why not take some info from the Wiki as well? Have you guys forgotten? ;)

It doesnt has to be ONLY about obscure gaming, and I said we could do that only in the event that the mag is a sucess.

Anyway, is there any risk that some VG company like ninty may sue us for showing these devkits and stuff? After all, most of the equipment has labells that say "confidential", "not for commercial use" and "Do not sell"

Count me in. I dont own many "obscure and rare items", but on the ones i do i can make a depth article about without problems - keeping in mind that somebody who speaks english better than me will have to reread the article to kill eventually grammar bugs xD. In any case, d'oh! there's 20€ (30?) flying around which i gladly will contribute ^^.

BTW : i could make an article about the fan game translation scene.

Wiki should be our primary ressource! This way we would get alot of attention on it too ^^.

PDF = good for distribuiton, but TOO MUCH DISTRIBUITON = BAD for $$$. It wont take long to see it on filesharing i fear. :/

thanks a lot guys! i'll put my money share too, obviously :)

So, 36 pages seems reasonable, for it gives enough pages to put in lots of infos and pictures too (and we won't have ads in the mag, except for one in the back cover for the webpage i guess)...

So, MY (it's my idea and no need to follow it) idea about how to proceed:

we have 36 Pages -2 for front and back cover makes 34.
1 page for editorial and summary.
so i would think 3 pages for the most important article of the month for saying so
that leaves 30 pages that can be shared like this 4 per 8bit systems + 2 for rewieves and 2 per obscure periferals
Same per 16 and 32bit machines would make 24

so we still have 6 pages to be used for unreleased, clones, and devkits... and maybe even for a mail section in the following numbers.

Plenty of space! :)

Thanks guys that will surely help since some people are not english born speakers :)

We could halways only print hardcopies and lately release watermarked PDFs on the net for the sake of generousity ;)

so guys what do you think? by the way, i'd like to hear something from our editor too.... Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnn! ;)

and we'll need to share the tasks between members for not having problems in the future between writers and such...

So, i'm starting to take pieces togheter for the first number

articles to be included or suggested so far:

editorial kevin
Snes Cd-rom add-on karsten
Super A'can (yes i consider it obscure enough) Alchy
xbox launch team special editions Radiac
fan made game translations scene Kammedo

other things/articles to consider in this next releases:

an article about this web page history
an article about megacd/wondermega/32x etc (maybe not very obscure but lots of people doesn't know much bout that)
something about DEUCE, maybe a review
an article about jaguar add-ons

another interesting idea would be to make an article/analysys of all the hardware house that had to close in the years

by the way, sorry if i sound too bossy for saying so, it's just that i think we should start planning in advance for not running later :p
