I was at a friends house and my buddy got a call from his dad to turn on CNN. I saw what was going on and immediately checked in on ASSEMbler from my phone. I'm glad everyone here seems to be okay!

guys , this is not looking good.

10.45pm GMT: Now there are reports from nuclear plant operator Tepco that the Fukushima No 2 plant has lost cooling to three of its reactors.

It was one reactor in the Fukushima No 1 plant that had been the cause for concern earlier – so this news is certainly unwelcome.

Santa Cruz had some boats get knocked around by 3-4ft waves, a moron in Oregon was taking pictures and was pulled out to sea (a few others were washed out but rescued) and in San Diego some people with a death wish went surfing. I kid you not.

Webcam of the Nuclear plant if anyone is interested. Updated hourly but it doesn't look like Chernoybl as of 34 minutes ago. From what I understand we aren't in the OH GOD OH GOD PANIC PANIC PANIC! phase as most people still seem to have their towels.

Though the prevailing windows are heading in my direction. I sincerely hope for everyone's sake this doesn't get any worse.

Japan's *fairly* small compared to Ukraine. How much would have to be abandoned if it did meltdown akin to Chernobyl?

Some people just don't have sense.

chernobyl didn`t even have a containment , but its impossible to predict what may happen.

most radiation could the isolated to the plant and its containment ( like three mile island) or it could leak outside.

lets hope we don`t find out.

still , might be wise to take some precautions , especually if you have small children.

I remember when I first moved to Japan I bought a 17" CRT Mitsubishi from Akihabara. Man, I can't remember how much it was but it was second hand and it was at least double that price. This was long before Amazon JP though. ;)

The reactor design at Fukushima is completely diffrent to Chernobyl, your closer comparison is Three Mile Island and it a long way from that.

Nice to see the AG people are OK.

Yes I realize that, hence why I said "it doesn't look like" rather than "oh crap its built like Chernobyl down to the stolen Soviet plans!". The RBMK line is very different (thank god) to anything anyone with a decent nuclear regulatory body would allow.

Though it wouldn't be a half bad time to break out the Vodka and iodine tablets.

From the BBC Breaking News Stream:
0014: Japan declares a state of emergency at the Fukushima-Daini power plant, where three of its reactors failed, the Associated Press reports. It says a state of emergency is already in place at the nearby Fukushima-Daiichi plant, where two reactors failed.
0023: People living within a 3km (two-mile) radius of the Fukushima-Daini nuclear plant are told to evacuate, the AFP news agency reports.
