Nintendo never sell their consoles at a loss, so it makes you wonder how much of the £229 for a 3DS is profit. Sony will however sell the PSP2 at a loss, and they're most likely hoping that the cost of the components will drop between now and launch. I reckon they're aiming for a £249 release price during September/October. I'm starting to think that although it looks nice, Sony have made an error in the design though. A clamshell or PSPgo style design would have made it a more compact unit and offered some sort of protection for the screen and/or controls. The Start, Select and PS buttons really aren't very well placed either. Why go for hardware buttons when there's a touch screen?
I have to disagree. A clam shell design is kind of silly if the device is only 1 screen. If screen protection is at issue (and really my ipod touch screen still looks fine with a simple cheap screen cover/filter), one can probably buy soft cover to go over the device when not in use (akin to what you see some people buy for cell phones). As for why not PSP-Go design, They tried that. Hell look at the leaked devkit picture it was PSP-Go design but I can tell you it lead to not having anyplace to really grip the device with out setting off the back touch. Second it's been rumored that they had issues dealing with the system's heat with that configuration. Also why HW buttons over touch buttons. Really do you have to ask? Even something as simple as a select/start. :fresh:
If the screen is made of that new gorilla glass it will be incredibly hard to scratch. I would suspect this to be the case considering the quality of the unit. Again coming back to those analog sticks. Hello breakage city.
I am under the impression that this system is less portable than most, so you wouldn't be cramming it in your pocket so easily and thus perhaps taking better care (naturally, not accidentally) of it. Judging by the videos, they're still pretty low profile but not as physically integrated as the PSP stick.
I'm glad they didn't go with the PSPgo dsign. Having owned not one but two of them I can tell you now they are a crock of shit with regards to comfort. My PSP-300X gives me a comedy amount of pain between my 2nd and 3rd metacarpals and the stick bruises my thumb but with the N100X It was infinitely worse especially as it was much more cramped. The only saving grace for the N100X was the PS3 pad but then the whole fucking point of it being portable went out of the window which made the smaller size pointless!
I am actually impressed for what it is, a huge step up from psp. Also kinda like the angle sony is going for. But to be honest it's going to be at least $300, which even then is a reasonable price consider what kind of tech it uses. Glad they are getting with the program and switching to flash media like everyone else, a much smarter move. I will definitely be getting the 3ds first, but if the game lineup is right, I might have to get me one of these.
A true statement, although personally I think 720p Is fine.It looks nice enough to the point where i'm not going to complain(and it does look VERY nice on a 720p set and on a 1080p Set with Component cables instead of HDMI) I mean, come on most of us grew up playing consoles that had resolutions of 320x240 or less (or variations).
Wait wait wait... Have you actually played a good game over hdmi? It looks leaps and bounds better. Not to mention that blu ray players will not upscale regular DVD movies over anything but hdmi. We also at one point had only wired telephones, but if my cell phone loses service For an entire day, I will be upset and call r unacceptable.
Didn't sony sell the PS3 at a $100 loss per unit? why wouldn't they subsidize PSP2? I bet it's going to be $299, or maybe even $249 so people have a harder time deciding between this one and the 3DS (something that didn't happen with the DS). $200 now is officially out of the question, costs alone must be higher than that. Anyways, they should throw all those extra functions away, the PSP was also supposed to be a multi-function device, with UMDs being the fucking handicap there just so sony pictures could resell you all their crappy movies in tiny incompatible discs. At the end the only use people gave to PSPs beside playing the games was running emulators on it.
When you "throw all those extra functions away" like the touch screen, cameras, motion detection etc all you're left with from a modern, mass-market perspective is a device for playing traditional console games. This is exactly the reason the original PSP became stuck in a rut. Obviously Sony think the extra functionality is required to combat the 3DS and frankly I agree.
I really want Halo:CE ported to this. With added WiFi multiplayer... Someone slap me and wake me up from this dream...
Yeah I have, and 720p games look awful compared to component video(Just as 1080p ;which does work over Component video on some sets like mine; is noticeably not as good looking over component) at that resolution. Ailiasing is much more noticeable, low texture size is much more noticeable, picture quality don't look as good so on and so forth. Games that are 1080p Enabled I play over HDMI and they look much better than over component. (And I have both the HDMI and component channels calibrated properly, I would go test it right now to be able to describe it better but my PS3 recently got the YLOD so It's a no go. And I can think of two titles immediately that support this. FFXIII@1080p and RE5@720p) Sure go ahead and think I am crazy. But it's what i've noticed while spending a big chunk of time playing games only on Component and then getting HDMI cables and playing on that for a long period of time as well. *shrug*
Maybe it's because I've never owned an HD television, but I would hate to have priorities in life where I could truly be disappointed with my oh-so-"inferior" 720p signal or the type of interface. If you're playing your video game (or even watching a movie) correctly, you won't be thinking about this sort of shit (unless you're like me and have trouble playing Battlefield online with my SD CRT) at all... and if you can't enjoy your game/movie because all you can think about is aliasing, you should re-evaluate yourself. Maybe you'll upgrade to XXXXXXX cables and your image will be 5% better, but once you're in a game you won't notice.
I wish that was true. It'd be nice not to notice visual issues, most of my mates don't care, but it's something completely subconscious for me now. When I trace it back, it started when I was doing a lot of video editing work and constantly looking for flaws, and I guess that translated gradually into doing the same thing when watching films or playing games. Just as an aside, telling people how to play games "correctly" is a touch patronising. I don't think anyone here is saying they don't enjoy games/movies in 720p, that hasn't been said once. It's one thing to point out a minor flaw but entirely another to say that the flaw means you can't enjoy the whole. I have a laundry list of problems in my mind for every screen I've owned for the last five years, but I've still played a fuckton of games on them.
Except that I did not pay $2700 for an HDTV to use the same equipment I used 10 years ago. This is also one of my issues with wii... Handing me a "next gen" experience that looks like a gamecube to me was a lateral step. Most consumers can't see a difference between HD signals. All north American sports are 720p because all delivery systems (satellite, cable, fiber) can easilly deliver a 60fps channel... But does the general consumer know that? So now Sony and apple can play loose with the terms and launch things like retina displays and 544 px screens. Oh and consider this: If you enjoy the lord of the rings or matrix films more on a beautiful HDTV than on a smaller standard definition CRT, are you watching them incorrectly?
Agreed, if I had to compare it to anything in pure terms of Portability, I would compare it to an iPad or a Kindle DX, something like that. Yes its portable, but its not designed to be something that you just put in your pocket and go. Is it portable? Yes, is it designed to be like a cellphone and fit in your pocket? No. -Disjaukifa
