I think the Pluto was a Saturn with a beefed up gpu to dethrone the psx on the graphics department. This paired with a built in net link would had made Some impact. This explains the misterious CD for the Pluto hardware. Also Sega would most likely released a add on gpu card Upgrade for the 1st Gen users. I guess somehow this ended up being the "test bed" for The dream cast. Thanks for sharing and....rip monk fish. Amazing Here's my theory: The Pluto was a Saturn with a better gpu unit destined to dethrone the psx on the 3d graphics department. This explains the CD for the Pluto hardware. By having net link made it even better. Sega would had released this gpu card separetely for the 1st Gen Saturn users , so everybody could play the new optimized games. This ended up being the test bed for the dream cast.
Heh. "I hear Uranus is Cartridge Based". That does sound about right. I guess a person in his thirties can laugh about the same things he would have laughed at at 14. Or at least, I just did.
Ryo Suzuki: Sure, please get in touch. Dreamcastmaster: I take it those blue discs aren't something that can be duplicated, right?
Unfortunately not the Saturns copy protection is based on a ring in the CD that can't be duplicated on a CDR. Only 1st party games used the blue disc so very little chance of ever finding one. I've only got the black disc for 3rd party games, if I had a blue I'd lend you for sure.
Ah, okay. I might have to ask around to see if any of my old colleagues has a blue disc still. Thanks for the info!
I am drooling over this, I can help you set it up to use Netlink though. I still use my Saturn modem all the time for matches with buds. I have it networked into my router and use a TLS o fake the dial tone. Thanks for sharing this with a Sega nut as till now I have never seen one!!
some great finds, sounds like I will get back to hitting the flea markets, yard sales and pawn shops now that warm weather is coming. are you sure there were only 2 plutos produced? that would be an awesome flea market find. talk about hitting gold.
Actually thinking on this there could be some merit as we know there was a 3D accelerator cartridge in development for Virtual Fighter 3. So if that uses the mystery 2nd slot then the memory cart slot is free for games saves and 4M carts. Just speculation.
Indeed. If the Pluto CD has some sort of "Impressive" technical demo that can't run on the 1st Gen Saturn's , then this Could probably be true. Vf3 could had been an excellent Title to re-launch the Saturn. Also the cart could have more memory into the circuit.
I love seeing things like this pop up, especially being a huge mark for Sega. I have a vague recollection of reading about something called the Sega BlackBelt as well, I used to get excited for everything Sega put out, up to and including the Dreamcast.
Or just make an ISO of the disc then burn it to a CDR. Then you could just disc swap it as if it was a CDR game. Simple.
Make an ISO of the CDR and then burn it onto another CDR so its on a CDR? Why not just disc swap the original CDR?
I wasn't aware that the "original" was also a CDR. But since it is you could just do the disc swap with that like you said.
Maybe make another copy so as not to risk damaging the original ? Considering it must be pretty rare. I've never tried disc swapping but you still do have to manipulate the cd while it's still running so... (maybe I'm just a chicken though) Also, R.I.P. Monkfish. Amazing piece of Sega history right here. As a fan of the Saturn I can say it's pretty damn awesome to see something like this unearthed after so many years.
Thats actually a good idea and something I was going to say makes sense. But I was mostly just having fun with Yamuko
