When I was growing up I pounced on every opportunity to watch Anime that I could...but that was because we didn't have Cartoon Network and the Sci-Fi channel showed anime only every weekend like at 3 A.M. Now I barely can stand most anime. I've only seen Digimon and Evangelion. And to be honest I thought Evangelion wasn't deep and only appealed to cretins who actually thought it was deep because the director barfed symbolism everywhere. And looking back, I think I only like Digimon because I was about 13 or so when it was on TV. I'm still a little nostalgic about it, though.

As people probably know, I've posted on 4chan in the past, and the people there just surprise me. I honestly don't see how a grown man, like 18+, can watch crap like Lucky Star, Chobits, and Rozen Maiden. That super cutesy crap just isn't my thing, anyway.

Nowadays when I see Anime on TV, I don't want to watch it, even if its not super cutesy crap. A lot of it just seems so juvenile. Lately this has applied to a few JRPG series, too. Atlus and NIS seem to have an obsession with putting little girls into their games as heroes. Kind of the opposite of Sqaure, who almost always have little boys...

Anyways, these people that act this crazy over Japan may be idiots, but I never see anyone act this crazy over anything else, or any other country, like say, Russia. Non-Russian Asia just FASCINATES some people for some reason.

Indeed, gold diggers are everywhere. *HOWEVER*, the hillarity of the article is for Tokyoites who know exactly what kind of place Heartland is. The icing on the cake for me is that a couple of girls I know that were visiting from Hawaii went there and I busted their balls. Then a week later, I get this article. I of course, shamelessly forwarded it. One of my bosses read excerpts out loud...especially the bit about the "IT Consultants".

To paint a picture, the place makes their own, very awful beer, and it's the only kind they sell. It's very crowded, however, don't expect it to be a fashion-mecha, or mecha of anything other than bankers. 99% of the guys are wearing suits (nice ones, but still suits) and the girls are of course dressed to kill. I've been a couple of times (I'm usually dragged) and nobody would give me the time of day there. Even if I'm dressed up (slacks and a designer shirt) I've still got longish hair, and clearly exude something not conservative enough to make half a bar a year.

I'd much rather go to a place where the women would never fuck a gaijin, but the tunes and vibe are good.

    AHEM...

I feel sorry for that girl. The thing is, everyone where I'm from who likes Japan are those type of people. I, myself, am not really a fan of manga/anime...I mean I watched some when I was a kid and it initially got me interested in Japan, but I grew to love the actual history and culture from that and I don't even watch anime at all anymore.

I am however wanting to pick up simple manga to practice reading Japanese, but I just feel....weird....going into the manga shops...I don't feel right most of the time so I tend to just avoid them haha.

You know, the strange thing is taht when I was a kid all my fav' TV shows were Japanese. Of course I had no idea about this at the time because I was just a kid. Shows I liked were Battle of the Planets or better knows as G=Force in the states which as we know know is actually the Japanese show Gatchaman edited to bits. Another one I loved was Star Fleet, again from Japan, a puppet space adventure show.

Of course there were many shows I loved that were not Japanese such as Inspector Gadget (Original series not the newer shite), Thundercats, Ulysses, Jace and the Wheel Warriors, Dungeons and Dragons and of course Transformers. The odd thing is that even some of those are connected to Japan. I hated stuff like He-man. If there was ever a camp animation for kids, that was it

LOL Don't forget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes (er...HERO turtles to you Brits) that was influenced a bit by Japan methinks. I loved the fusion of it though. But I also liked shows when I was older such as Mighty Max...dunno why just thought it was cool.

Inspector Gadget was kind of Japanese. It was outsourced to Japan anyway. I loved that show, too, back when Nickelodeon showed reruns of it in the late 80s / early 90s.

I kinda liked He-Man when I was younger. My older brother had a lot of the episodes recorded to VHS tapes or something.

I never got to see old Transformers episodes, the closest I got was that Beast Wars show. Meh, it had its moments.

Ah, the older Transformers (up to season 3 I'd say) were good. After that it sort of lost the plot like most things do :( Not that there was much of a plot anyway

If you have the chance, check out the DVD release of the animated Transformers The Movie. It's actually pretty good in an 80's kind of way. Also listen out for the "OH, SHIT! WE HAVEN'T EVEN DENTED IT" line  It was taken out of the video release I believe.

I might check that movie out. Since I never saw Transformers from the 80s I didn't know if I'd like it much or not, or if there would be a ton of references I wouldn't get.

that's fun yakumo, we shared almost the same doom. i loved any kind of japanese animations while i hated he-man and such frowsy and sloppy cartoons, without having any clue from where those animations/cartoons originally came from, at that time. it was just the feeling, that in all those japanese animations something special was put in, kinda magic thing, which was missed in all the american and other countries animations.

No, Ninja Turtles was done as a dark parody of Ronin and The Avengers.

I <3 Power Rangers/Super Sentai (less super Sentai though...)

I used to pounce on EVERY anime I could (Living near a indie anime shop called The Anime Cafe that later founded the Seattle based Sakuracon helped lol)

By High School I was sick of it and face palmed every day of Japanese class...

Actually for people in our age bracket, they would know it was Battle of the Planets. I believe it was re-dubbed (and watered down) some years later as G-Force. They both suck ass compared to Gatchaman.

watered down ? NO NO NO. NO!

Gatchaman became battle of the planets and was HEAVILY censored. After it stopped being aired TBS needed to do something with the franchise to continue to own the license so they redubbed it as Gforce and aired one episode. (similar to why there was a Fantastic 4 movie made but didn't get release in the 90s). The budget was slashed so there is one background music (synthed theme song) but the overall dub was much more accurate to the original and less was cut due to the late 80s less strict censorship.

This was then aired in the early/mid 90's on Cartoon Network. The last few episodes weren't redubbed.

Gatchaman > Gforce > Battle of the planets

Gatchaman has been given a proper accurate dub on DVD within the last two years thus eliminating GForce as being the most accurate dub.
