You know the ones, ones that everyone thinks are true and turn out to be nothing buy rubbish. Everyone knows the Donkey Kong being a mangled version of Monkey Kong when in fact Miyamoto said that he was looking up words in his Japanese to English dictionary and came across Donkey and saw Stubborn. My favourite one which I have confirmed was the Continental Circus myth where the game should have been called Continental Circuit but some Japanese person wrote down Circus rather Circuit in some sort of Japlish way. What in fact happened was some American manager got a fax asking them to make some marques and side art for a new racing game and he thought that Circus must mean Circuit and changed it, but being American and not knowing anything about F1 he didn't realise that the word Circus can be applied to F1 (as in F1 Circus meaning the whole F1 event). Then the machines had Continental Circuit artwork rather then Circus... Anyone got any more?
Heres a few ones I heard: MGS has tons of gay and bisexual characters because Hideo Kojima stated he was bisexual Shadow of the Colossus had the Queen in it (somewhere) Aeris appears in the Church after her death in FF7, and there, supposedly, was GOING to be a part where you talked to her ghost or some crap in there, but they cut it. Speaking of this, I HAVE seen her in there for a split second after she died in the game.
one that ive heard a lot is that tomb raider on the psx1 has a cheat code that makes lara croft naked so back then I scanned the disk and extracted all graphics (like you do :lol) and there are no tits or arse in there
i havent confirmed this one yet, but back in the day I used to hear all sorts of stupid rumours about SF2CE, the most amazing one was that Blanka had this move where he spitted some sort of electrified butterfly that electrocuted your opponents! xD Lots of people told me about this one but I never actually saw it and allways considered it bullcrap. but now we have MAME and all sorts of SF2 hacks and bootlegs are easily playable now so I wonder if this was true or not!
i've thought that this only makes sense if we're talking about 2D games? in case of 3D it's just a matter of the textures (calculated values). and those textures don't have imperatively look like tits or anything else of a female body. anyway, it was a hoax for sure. and even if it were true, it woulnd't make the game any better.
Talking about SF2, you know how some names are different in the Japanese original from the other versions and Balrog is called M. Bison. Now, I read somewhere that this was meant to be a reference to Mike Tyson (makes sense, no?) but they had to change it for the US and other countries to avoid any claims. Always seemed plausible to me. Myth or common knowledge?
I would think Plausible as the Tyson was at one time quite popular in Japan.. or it could have been changed to reference the "Mike" in Street fighter 1. One i have is the Wendy O'Koopa suit in Super Mario Bros 3 (NES).. i've heard a few people talk about it.. I even have an old nintendo power guide that lists various power ups for the worlds and it shows a small pic of Wendy.. (Supposedly this is similar to the hammer bro. suite but you throw those rings that she throws)... (its bugged me for years)
Birdo from Super Mario Bros. 2 is a transvestite. I think this myth was mainly a mistranslation error, though. Morrowind was originally going to be 3 times as large, but Bethesda cut it down to just Vvardenfell, and making everyone think it was a huge island in the middle of nowhere, when it really wasn't. 17th Colossus in Shadow of the Colossus exists (again, you said Myths) In Wild Arms, it is possible to get the Guardian Blade (The one sword that destroyed the world or whatever) but due to a mistranslation error, Jack or Rudy's best sword doesn't match its name, but its one and the same. I cant remember where I read this. I also remember loads of myths about Final Fantasy Tactics, but I bet Karsten knows EVERYTHING about that game already. I swore I read somewhere that Cecil was in the game as a custom class known as the "Dark Knight". Oh well, the PSP version has that class so whatever. I've also heard countless myths about most games in the Zelda series, but I doubt many are true.
The funniest myth that comes to mind is the Mortal Kombat Nude-ality finishing move. It was a popular myth with teens. I remember plenty of other myths like being able to play as Zero in Mega Man X by doing various damned near impossible tasks. I specifically remember a rumor about somehow defeating Vile in the first stage would grant you all the original Mega Man boss powers. That would certainly be sweet.
Didn't the Animalities in MK3 start out as a rumor in MKII? Before Animalities were introduced in MK3, many fans were convinced Sub-Zero could turn into a polar bear in MKII. There was even a strategy guide which published a fake picture of this happening. In MKII 3.1, one of the possible lines that you would see in the game after beating Shao Kahn is a scrambling of the phrase "There are no Animalities". And of course, Liu Kang's Dragon Morph existed in MKII before it was made into his Animality in MK3. The developers actually decided to introduce them based on the popular rumors from the previous game, from what I've read. The most popular rumor I can think of would be from Super Mario Bros. Jumping over the pole would warp you to secret world.
noob saibot started as a rumor too. a lot of stuff from MK started from fan made rumors. true I remember a game enhancer for the PSX had a ad that showed it and said "Yes. we're working on that Nude Tomb Raider code right now..." and it showed a CGI hand from the side dropping a bra.
