What are the must have classic pc games ?

Some great RTSs:

Total Annihilation - works on Windows 7, great fan community - hundreds of quality total conversions, units, maps etc. I've put literally thousands of hours into it.

Mechcommander - lovely 2D graphics and animation, great cheesy C&C style FMV and it (along with the expansion and its sequel) are available for free download.

Dune 2000 - much better than any of Westwood's other Dune games imo.

Sudden Strike - incredibly detailed and engrossing, though there is a lot of micro management, which may turn some people away.

C&C - all bar C&C 4 :dammit:


Also, not sure if Abuse has been mentioned - a quality mouse controlled run n gun, lots of pace to it and a really tense atmosphere.

 

Abuse rocks, on both Linux and DOS.

Wasn't there one of those mechanical arcade-type games called Alley Cat? There was a song that played with it, some old-timey Frank Sinatra type stuff. Maybe I'm confused.
