I think the newest holy grail for my list would be a disk image for Super Mario Maker and the tools to extract the assets (both to look for anything hidden inside and also to see every single possible graphic and sound asset the game has). No I wouldn't want one to pirate it, if I just wanted to play it I would buy it
Tomb Raider The Angel Of Darkness 2001/2002 beta builds Resident Evil Zero N64 Train E3 Demo Parasite Eve 1 any beta assets
Megaman legends (Rockman NEO) where megaman/rock actually explodes upon death. Would make me quite happy.
That has been done already: http://rhcafe.us.to/wiki/index.php/Super_Mario_Maker http://www.spriters-resource.com/wii_u/supermariomaker/ https://tcrf.net/Super_Mario_Maker http://www.mariowiki.com/List_of_Super_Mario_Maker_pre-release_and_unused_content
I don't know if this counts.. but Gran Turismo 2000. The earliest playable version of GT3 known. Looks just like an upscaled GT2, with one car, one track, and a time limit of two minuets. It's kinda like a GT3 beta, and I've only played it as an ISO.
I attended a talk once where the creator of Shenmue shared some hilarious anecdotes about the development of the game. Apparently the cats were assigned the wrong animations at one point and were walking around with human animations applied to their skeletons. For me, my holy grails remain: -Prerelease builds of Ocarina of Time -Prerelease builds of Mario 64 -Prerelease builds of Quest 64 <-- Odd one, I know, but something about that game fascinates me.
certainly "AKIRA" Snes & genesis versions. perhaps it would have been crap, but i would have loved to play them
A few of mine: Freelancer sequel on 360, canned by MS... Conan (Jaguar) E3 Halo 2 demo-looked far more promising than actual SP campain turned out to be. Agartha (DC) Paperboy (7800) GTA III and The Bouncer (DC) just to see if rumours were true... Turrican,Skyfox and Electrocop ( 7800) Cabal, Rolling Thunder, Vindicators... (Lynx). Adam Caveman (A8) screens looked like mock ups.
But most of all: The Dreamland Chronicles:Freedom Ridge (PC/PS2) Mythos Games..... this was to be Julian Gollop's TRUE follow-up to XCOM, was previewed and down for a Q4 2000 release.

I missed out on the opportunity to purchase a Dead or Alive 4 prototype some years ago due to a general indecisiveness and tight funds. However, I do know that it is out there...
A few of mine would be: Shining Force Shining Force II (I have one, with a pretty awesome quirk, at least to me, but it's final outside of that) Landstalker FFVI D+D Warriors of the Eternal Sun (Don't know why lol, but love the game...YEAH!!!) I managed to cross a few off my list in the past few years (SF 2, Dragon Warrior 1 early build and FF 1 early build), so don't give up, they do come around once in a while! Edit - Here's some info on the SF2 for any other SF fans: http://www.nintendoplayer.com/prototype/shining-force-ii/) The rom is completely playable, despite the physical copy's crazy issue of having SRam with no battery slot to power it, which glitches/sends the game on an acid trip after you take a first step.
Wow, that's cool to hear. By FF do you mean Final Fantasy? If so that would be pretty damn cool to have.
