Maybe it's only included in 1.6 and later, but there should be a stock app included simply called "Mail" - That one can speak both POP3 and IMAP, to any server, not just Google's. Or you could install another mailer from the Market, I hear "K-9 Mail" is pretty good.

Depends on what country I am in, for UK, Europe and Australia I use this 3 year old Nokia 1112, is black and white, does SMS and calls and not much else, but has been realiable and the battery still holds a great charge. In the UK I use a Virgin Mobile prepaid simcard which is great as I still have the original number despite not using it in the UK (or anywhere else) for 2 years, else I get a local simcard (which was a Optus one when I was in Australia).

In the USA, I use this old Audiovox 8610 also using a virgin mobile prepaid account still have my original number despite not using it for 3 years straight but I do pay them a few dollars a year to keep it.

In Japan, I use this Panasonic 705p which is a Softbank 3G prepaid phone. Like most Japanese prepaid phones it has the ability to use the internet but it's happily disabled for no good reason.

Now someone may ask why don't I get one phone that does all countries? Well if I got it in my country of origin and had a plan it would still cost more then the prepaid plans and personally I rather loose a cheap phone then one big one that has all my data (all the phones have the phone numbers of the others) plus lots of sim cards are fiddily, although the Nokia can store 4 between the battey and slide cover.

Also having these are good as apart from the Japanese Softbank phone (and that email address is only given to my GF), none can use email which means I am contactble if someone really wants me and I don't have to read pointless email all day which is a nice bonus, I also have a Palm T5 which I can use to run any apps I really need.
