I voted XBOX... but the GC comes in a close second for me.

PS2 - Won on the games mainly, but I do like the design of the PS2, both fat and thin.

Simply, for quality and quantity of 2D games and a truly scary amount of RPG and quirky titles. It is the only console of the last gen that I can walk into a game shop in Japan and see a game I have never seen before, and truly believe I could discover an unknown classic.

It's also the only console to change game shopping in to a mundane task. Game shops (now gradually changing) where really boring places when the PS2 was in it's prime. Practically every shelf was PS2  All other systems ended up being squashed in to one place. Thank god it's changing.

    Dreamcast > Ps2 > Xbox > Gamecube

Gamecube had very few games I actualy liked and my most wanted game turned out to be very meh (mario sunshine).

Xbox on the other hand became the ultimate media center & had many games I loved (Halo, JSRF to name a few).

    Ps2 had the games (period).

Dreamcast was perfect, is perfect and forever will be perfect. Long live dreamcast in my memories (probably my favorite console period).

Gamecube was very decent in the beginning and had a lot of promise, but Nintendo fucked it up with some bad choices in games (Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker being timing mistakes), lack of online support, and poor choice of 3rd party games (Plus most of the games later in it's life were Mario Party and sports games).

Xbox was fairly decent: the concept of Xbox Live is a good one and it helped where Sony was lackluster, but they were pretty much a alternative for higher end PC games.

PS2 did well with games from both the US and Japan, but lacked in the online department and had compatability issues. DVD and backwards compatability also helped.

Dreamcast was a very decent system, but it had far too short of a lifespan to call it a major force. Still, I think some of the older concept of game designs and management went with the Dreamcast.

Eh, PS2 was my favorite in the end.

Dreamcast. There is just something about it thats so heartwarming. Like, I think of Dreamcast and I think color and clear. Reminds me of SNES and Genesis. SNES always seemed smooth and the Genesis just screamed the word.... "Grunge?"

Wow, I cant believe I am even trying to explain this. Hahahaha, I just love the Dreamcast (As well as SNES and Genesis =P) :icon_bigg

Dreamcast for me. There hasn't been another console that's provided as much fun and enjoyment for me.

Hard to pick between the DC and PS2. In the end I went with PS2 due to number of decent games overall.

It was a great generation though and all consoles had a good turn out.

Gamecube, since I've been with Nintendo since childhood. I will hand it to Sony for managing to keep up its pace as the market leader and by unloading so many games with its platform... Kudos too to Microsoft for busting into the market and making a name. Dreamcast forever lives on the hearts of those who were willing to give it a chance even after its untimely... "DEATH"

Still, the little INDIGO (hyurruru purple lunchbox LOLS) wonder captivated me simply because it delivered the Nintendo franchises I needed, and more. It didn't have all the games, but I was fine with that. It gave me enough, and that's fine.

Dreamcast has more votes than the others put together. As much as I love my DC, I don't think it can compete in sheer numbers of quality games to the PS2.

Sorry Yakumo! Letting the side down, I know.

I m a nintendo-fan deep down, but let's be honest here. For any n64 heavy-duty gamer, the GC was a let-down for most of the part.

It was the system that got mu thru this generation mostly, and I did have tons of fun with too, but I never got the 'high' peaks of excitement that some n64 games offered.

To set the record clear, I enjoyed my GameCube more than XBOX and PS2 - this whole generation let me down for the most part.

The PS2's and XBOX' gamepad and lack of my-style-of-titles bring the cube on top.

Games that shinned for me this gen include, but aren't limited to: Monkey Ball series, Super SmashBros Melee, F-zero GX, RE4, Chibi Robo (amazing game!) , Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Pikmin, Star Wars Rogue leader series , Tales of Symphonia, Eternal Darkness, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, PoP:Sands of time, and many more :D

On the other hand, PS2 games that I want/like are limited to: MGS3:Substance, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and GT4 (mostly curious) -perhaps REZ too, or some other DC ports.

PS: Please note that i consider the DC to be a generation of its own really. Everyone likes the DC, so it's unfair to the rest of the competition to include it in this comparison :p Although my friend owned primarily a DC, I confess to have enjoyed it alot and I still have great respect for the system - looking forward to getting one some day.

You know its funny: I got into the whole 32bit hype back in the day, but when the DC went MIA and the PS2 got the entire market (while having almost no games) I kinda retired from the gaming universe for a while.

All I can say is that during the time the DC was alive I was literally "living the dream", since after the stagnation of the last days of the 32bit gen the DC was truly a breath of fresh air, and somehow I felt it was the 16bit days all over again.

Looks like I wasnt the only one...

All I can say is that both the PS2 and the GC went as I expected, since we all knew after the DC death that sony would rule supreme once again, and that nintendo was going to continue with their strategy from the post-mario64 era.

The only surprise, if we can call it like that, was the Xbox whom I thought would dissapear after this gen (ie: MS would drop the project). I think the only thing keeping it alive during those years was a mixture of stubbornness and stupidy, cuz they were loosing [money] big time with that thing. After all it was just barely above the GC in sales numbers...

EDIT: to be honest barc0de, I think the DC and PS2 are in a generation of its own, since theres a very discernible power gap between those two and the Xbox-GC.

I agree with you, but i think it's tied between the DC and GC. One was killed to soon by SEGA and the Sony hype, and the other one was because lack of third party support. But i voted for the DC.

On the subject of the PS2, don't forget about: God of War / God of War 2, Burnout 3 / Burnout Revenge (if you didn't played them on the Xbox), Tekken 5, Soul Calibur 3, Final Fantasy XII (I'm not into RPGs that much but this is a masterpiece), Kingdom Hearts / Kingdom Hearts 2 (I love these), Devil May Cry series, Raiden 3, Black (again if you didn't saw it on Xbox), Ace Combat series, Bully,... the list goes on and on. You can't deny that the PS2 has a lot of good games and lot of variety as well.

I think the XBOX was more like a "test" machine. The real Microsoft console is the X360. The Xbox was the beta test for the Xbox live service and many other great features that Microsoft introduced. Anyway, the original Xbox never got my interest apart 10 games or so.

I only even saw the Dreamcast during the first year of this past generation... so can't say much about it.

Just couldn't get into the XBox. No really amazing games that weren't on another system. Even Halo got ported to the PC (although I preferred BF1942 anyway).

The Gamecube has what is still probably my most-played game of all time... Super Smash Bros. I don't even own one of the suckers, but if I did, that would be the first game I'd get. Others... not so much. A couple good RPGs, but no really big standouts.

PS2 wins out, though, in my book. Tons of RPGs, good original games (Katamari), even some decent strategy and action games. It seems like the ideal system for single-player stuff, and pretty darn good for 2-player. Plus the backwards compatibility is really nice.
