The Dreamcast is the only console that I can play for weeks on end, without sleep. The PS2 has Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, and Devil May Cry, which are amazing games which I still love to play, but I still find myself drawn to Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Rez and Chu Chu Rocket. I love my Xbox too, but nothing stands out in the same way that the DC and PS2 do. On the GCN, I can only really remember playing Pokemon Coliseum, but it had all the new BS Pokemon, and I hate that. Still, the game was fun and I liked it. Apart from that, the Gamecube doesn't really do much for me. DC > PS2 > Xbox > GCN
i got a ps2 for rez and ico and did not regret buying one at all. ico and soc are experiences not to be missed, imo. the same way i got a dreamcast for jsr and a gamecube for luigi's mansion right at launch. i ended up playing more ps2 than anything else but there are always exclusive titles that justify getting a system. that said i voted for the ps2 because in the course of the last two years it offered the game experiences i now remember most.
yes, but not at launch. actually i also bought it with a big bag of expectations and was slightly disappointed though i enjoyed super monkey ball and windwaker and final fantasy (to some extent) of course.
Luigis Mansion was fun! My favorite quote from the game: "Oh I'm just so finicky about hats!" GG Luigi, we all know what kind of meatballs you like now!
PS2 and GTA is what got me back into gaming. No one console has doing anything thats close to the same impact on me. Xbox being the least Fav by a long shot.
Two games are better than an entire system....and Gradius V....So yeah, it would cost approximately ~$150~ to get a PS2 and one game for it. So enjoy your shiny useless CDs that you spent tons of money on without buying a Japanese Saturn to play them! And if anything, Radiant Silverguns outlandish price exceeds that of the PS2 AND Gradius', sans the money spent on the Japanese Saturn. Radiant Silvergun may be a really, really good shmup, but implying that it (by itself) is better than an entire console and every game for it is beyond fanboyish. Especially a console with a very vast library of games, too. If the Saturn and DC were such godly systems, why did they fail? Is everyone else too casual for them or what? On a semi related note, the people that say "LOL DC IS GETTING ANOTHER GAME, TAKE THAT XBAWKS AND PISS2" make me want to do this. A lot. :banghead: Seriously, have Sega fanboys gone insane when they finally realized they were never ever going to get a new Sega console or a new somewhat decent Sonic game? I try not to show bias. I really think all of the current systems have worthwhile games on them. I've got a ton of the best for each as well. And if I don't, I plan on getting them. There is just one thing about fanboys that I don't understand. Does the company whose proverbial penis a fanboy may be sucking give them anything in return for their unabashed dedication and irrational comments on the Internet? Probably not, unless they changed their name either to Triforce, Sonic, Solid Snake, or Master Chief.
It's the unfortunate truth. Sega is dead and nothing short of a miracles gonna bring them back. They had their time and now it's over. Pity it was a series of mistakes 5-10 years earlier which really killed them, just as they had a chance of bringing themselves back.
Well seeing how apparently we are talking about the games for the systems, PS2 would be my choice as it had the bulk majority of the last generation by far. Again though my favorite would have been the Xbox. But the PS2 it seems to me was for a long peroid of time, the only choice there was. The DC was dead, the GC rarely came out with anything great and had poor 3rd party support, the Xbox got the same games (that I noticed) as the PS2. I actually can't remember at the moment, but I know I bought the GC first primarily for Star Wars Rogue Squadron. Then I'm pretty sure awhile after that I bought the PS2 with the Xbox coming up last. Oh and I did have a DC before the GC.
If I had to choose my favourite console due to games owned then it would be DC (followed by PS2, XBox and GC in a pathetic forth) but despite the games I did feel rather unwhelmed by the DC and found that the PS2 had a lot more games I really wanted to play on the machine. With the number of releases on the PS2 it has sort of stolen the DCs thunder in terms of things it was good at (like Beat 'em ups). Did we have a poll on the previous previous generation?
While I'm not even going to bother with the rest of the drivel since I believe I made it perfectly clear that was a matter of opinion (and I would gladly take RS over damn near any console and its library sans the PC-Engine Duo or maybe Dreamcast, but definitely over the PS2), this bit needs a response. Ahem. The Saturn failed because Bernie Stolar is an idiot and had no idea what he was doing. The Saturn did well in Japan, but bombed in the US horribly due to Stolar's incompetence. A system cannot thrive off of Japan alone as NEC had already demonstrated, and so the Saturn wound up failing. Sega made some stupid decisions, quickly dropped support, and left US gamers who had also bought their 32X even more jaded. When the DC came around, most people figured it would be a failure like its predecessors, and thus it too bombed. Oh, and Sega pissed off EA by making their own sports games. Thus no EA games thus no dumb as hell but the majority of the market casual gamers. Likewise, no Square support in Japan = no success for the DC there either. And that is why, despite having some of the greatest libraries ever for a console, the Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast failed. Not because of the systems or the games... but because of the people making the decisions.
Why did it fail in Europe then? It failed because of poor third party support and strong competition. In Japan it succeeded because of Virtua Fighter. I loved my Saturn though!
The Saturn was by no means a flop in Japan. Any system with over 1000 titles can not be called flop. The Saturn was very popular in Japan. It had shooters, 2D fighters and the Sega branded arcade ports which is what made it such a hit in Japan. The PSX had the RPGs, Racing games and 3D fighters. Yeah the PSX was the dominant one but that's like saying the PC Engine failed because the Super Famicom out sold that. There's more to a system than the name. It's the feeling you get when playing it. Play a PlayStation and you feel like your playing something as common as muck (that doesn't mean it's bad). play a PC Engine or Saturn and you get the feeling of something special. Anyway, the masses have spoken, Dreamcast was the most popular or the last gen. After that I'd go with Game Cube but thats only because I've played quite a few of the games. XBox had some nice stuff that intersted me as well as did the PS2. Yakumo
With all due respect, that's called "personal bias", and it's an inability to see beyond a name. EDIT: erm, that sound kind of confrontational on reflection. You've admitted your own bias many a time, no offense meant eh
Hehe, for me it's reverse. I think PS1 was my favorite system ever, because of all the RPG's and stuff I use to rent as a kid, but that's also the USA vs. Japan. Saturn was almost non existent but it always interested me, I played Night's in a store on the militairy base once and told myself I'm gunna get that system some day, just wish it coulda gone far here.
Oh I know, I would never say the Saturn failed in Japan. It just failed overall in the world due to the US being run by idiots. I can't imagine the Europe side was too far away from them though... despite Europe getting more games than we did. Including cool shit like Keio Flying Squadron 2, Gokujyo Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack, Mega Man X3, etc. But yeah, it did very well in Japan. Still had games coming out for it up until 2000 or so. And I agree with everything else you said sir!!! PC-Engine Duo/Sega Saturn = hardcore gaming bliss. ray:
Back in the days of ps1/saturn i was a strong ps1 gamer and i think the main reason for that was not the saturn was a Bad system or had bad games but just the fact that i never really saw the saturn much on tv or whatever and it made me more aware if the PS1 therefore being young thats all i wanted,
I too hardly ever saw mention of the Saturn back in those days. I was only aware of Nintendo 64 and Playstation really. N64 because I had that Nintendo Power Magizine from the SNES and NES days, and Playstation because they advertised like hell and were quite popular. I'd definitely agree that Sega's marketing in the US sucked for the Saturn.
Back then I didn't know it existed either. If OI had known Daytona was on it I would've ran out and bought it right away as well.
