I just gotta get this off of my chest, i just seriously do not understand why Sega games and a few Sonic games gets s shit ton of flak from the YouTube gaming community & the internet in general? I don't know what YouTuber started this trend of hating everything Sega and somehow everyone in the entire fucking universe agrees! but, i'm really starting to get very irradiated by all of it! I just wanna know who because the only person i'm starting to assume is AVGN's overrated ass with that Nintendo Fanboyism shit and now since he's a huge e-celeb now everyone (except those that grew up with Ninty) all likes Nintendo a lot more than Sega ESPECIALLY his Sega Genesis vs Super Nintendo debate video is what blew it and what is the beginning of the end for the company's recognition in total! So any thoughts on this whole propaganda thing going on lately?
AVGN gave a fair comparison and didn't bash the Genesis at all. Specify what Sonic games you are speaking about because Sonic 06, Shadow the Hedgehog and a few others deserve the insults. Nintendo was the most popular until Sony arrive so you got to expect more people complimenting classic Nintendo consoles (on the flipside their new ones get lots of flak). I think Sega has made some cool accomplishments and I am relieved they saved Atlus. edit: Forgot to mention that gaming factionalism is rampant on Youtube as is petty fighting. Don't pay too much attention to them.
I doubt that and by fair comparison you mean taking music from early 1st party games and comparing those to mid-late SNES games! Yeah that's REAL fair dude lol and as for the whole Sonic 06 fiasco i can somewhat agree to that and as for Shadow The Hedgehog i can't really say much on that as i'd only played a lil bit of it on my cousin's Nintendo Gamecube and that was about it only though gotta remember both of those Sonic games ya mentioned do have it's fans (And no not just internet Sonic fanboys but teens & friends i've overheard on the bus, train & school that STILL plays those two games daily!! no bullshit man! lol). But ya know, it's all cool & dandy when Mario gets a free pass if his games turned out to be unplayable messes i Freaking bet your ass that everyone still gonna love it or play it cuz they always give him sloppy second chances!
I don't hate Sega I also don't understand why people always rave on every new Mario game when they offer nothing new. I've played Super Mario Brothers on the Wii a billion times with my kid but it doesn't offer anything new. The graphics are plain and boring and as a two player it's a right pain in the arse. That's my hoest opinion. Kirby is a much better game. I've also played the DS and 3DS games but you know what, they offer nothing new either yet nobody slags them. Nobody ever says anything about them all having the same BGM. It's just cool to hate Sega it seems. NOTE: I'm not saying all the Sonic games after Sonic Adventure are great by the way, especially the crap on the 360 and PS3, Sonic 2006 was it? man, that is a bad game.
What games he contrasted do not matter because the SNES had superior sound hardware. Shadow the Hedgehog may have fans, but it was Sega trying too hard to make the Sonic franchise cool for whiny teens that think they are edgy and higher than everybody. Had it succeeded Sega would've likely kept going on that direction. Nintendo has its best people work on Mario games so flops are rare. Super Mario Sunshine has a bad reputation among some and no one will defend the Virtual Boy Mario games.
One of the reasons some Youtubers hate Sega, the company, is what Sega of Japan's marketing department did to them last year. Sega filed trademark DCMA violating claims against videos that contain clips from Shining Force 3, with some channels being completely shutdown by Youtube. After all of the uproar, they offer some half-hearted non-apology. Some of the bigger Youtube channels with lot of followers still will not cover any games published by Sega, for example Totalbicuit.
I love Sega, That said there not the awesome game developers they were in the 90's. Back then every year they released games that set the standard for others to follow, That's not how things are now. When it come to Sonic games for me there's not been an amazing one since the Megadrive games come out. Sonic Adventures a good game but not a all time classic imho. As for Youtube comments it doesn't matter what video your on, There's always some idiot saying something horrible just to piss people off, The video can be about anything not just gaming a dog on a skateboard there's an idiot saying some crap, a kitten playing with a ball of string there's an idiot saying some crap, a baby saying it's first words yep there's some idiot saying some crap. You get my point the only good thing to come out of Youtube comments is this
The AVGN's comparison was...flawed to say the least. He mentions some weird chinese hardware (which is supposedly an NES on a chip) for the SNES' backwards compatibility, which is patently silly. The SNES sound hardware is better for certain things. Some games sound terrible on the SNES, but sound great on the Genesis (I feel like I said this before). Plus I could listen to the old Sonic themes all day long. As for Youtubers hating on Sega, I think at least some of it has to do with the Shining Force fiasco a couple years ago (http://www.destructoid.com/sega-forcing-removal-of-shining-force-videos-on-youtube-239581.phtml), and honestly, as a longtime Sega fanboy, some of their games since dropping the Dreamcast haven't been great. I did like Sonic Heroes and Generations, but they also released the turds that were Sonic 06 (which I couldn't finish the first level of) and Sonic Free Riders. Oh, and they refuse to bring most any Yakuza game stateside, nor have they made a Shenmue 3. 90% of Sega fanboys want Shenmue 3. The other 10% are upset the first game wasn't released on the Saturn.
Quite frankly, Sega has put out tons and tons of garbage over the years. Among the garbage there are some gems, but the legacy of those gems is tarnished by massive failures, both hardware and software failures. Nintendo games are, at worst, too formulaic and rehashes of older games, but there are many gems, and many more gems at that.
They evolved 3D graphics in early ninteties, they did some of the best games ever and amazing licenses. Now they do shitty games and destroy the nostalgic effect of their most loved franchises. Its like hating Square-Enix or SNK Playmore, you do because they want to.
Nintendo fanboy here, from NES to the present day. I don't hate SEGA, but it has to be said their greatest days are behind them (and so are Nintendo's, really). The Mega Drive was a fantastic machine, the Saturn has its charms, and the Dreamcast was a marvellous last hurrah, all with excellent games on them. But since then SEGA's ratio of games produced to games that are outstanding is pretty poor. As darcagn said, Nintendo has a habit of resting on past glories, but when they do that, they are normally onto a winner anyway, and it's hard to find an actually dreadful Nintendo-made game. SEGA's made some stinkers. Sonic 2006, for example, or Aliens: Colonial Marines.
I once had bought a Dreamcast and it broke after 2 weeks of playing Chu Chu Rocket and some demo discs and Sega said go fuck yourself and wanted ~70 bucks for repairing it. I loved that Dreamcast but now I hate SEGA. Thinking back I really wish SEGA would just have repaired it for free because the Dreamcast was a nice system that I completely missed out on because of bad customer support.
Mario Kart Wii Game & Wario Wii Play Wii Music And Colonial Marines wasn't even made by Sega - Nintendo has published some total trash made by other companies too, like Other M, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, that shitty Yoshi's Island sequel, etc.
Haters always hating I guess.... I mean look at the Wii-U and it's haters man.... And they complain like children. Best to ignore them.
I quite enjoyed MK Wii - not my favourite MK game but not bad - but the others weren't too bad either (although haven't played Wii Music), they were fairly shovelwareish, though. Which Yoshi's Island is that, the DS game? I quite enjoyed that. I dunno, it just appears that SEGA had more clangers in their hands, but maybe it's just perception.
what stranno said.......... They release absolute junk (such as Colonial marines, Sonic 06 etc) yet refuse to fund games like Shenmue HD/3 and localise Yakuza 5. In my opinion the new Sonic game for wii U looks pretty terrible gameplay wise (NOTHING like what a Sonic game should be) - Sonic Generations was loved by all (even critics) yet the one of the first things Sega said after releasing was 'we're not going to make a sequel' (iirc) I love Sega, but they really need to sort thereselves out.
This and the period of shitty Sonic games are what bug me about Sega. Hell, I have vivid memories of the constant visits to Sega World as a kid. One of my father's friends was helping out with something there (I don't recall what exactly) so I would often get weird free merchandise, including factory screw up ones. Sadly most of the Sega stuff I had was stolen as it was kept in the back shed. I recall having an alternative version of Sally with her having a bob and other stuff like keyrings, t-shirts, cups and other stuff. It was all actually quite neat and it's disappointing it shut down a couple of years late but, I suppose it was also a good thing given the sudden sharp drop of quality of a decent chunk of their Sonic games. Now, Sega essentially saving Atlus and the fact that the Persona Q and the other titles announced are going to be localized is somewhat balancing out the lack of Yakuza 5 localization (which for whatever reason, they keep teasing but I highly doubt it'll happen) is kinda balancing out my issues with Sega. I don't exactly hate Sega, just some of their decisions regarding some of their more popular titles has just been a stream of constant stupidity on their part. That said, they haven't hit Capcom levels as of yet.
okay! (fanboys are the problem) sega died at the saturn and nintendo at the ngc for me. (the n64 is a bit of an oddball. in comparative terms vs it's predecessors, can't fuckin stand it. controllers retarded and looks like it was fused with a vessel in a reactor core, and minimum 2d game selection) the aftermath (dc and wii) were just a bonus, at least sega went out with a bang throwing up the DC. the wii mainly for ngc roms. you want HATE? well here it is. tales of symphonia 2. it finally fucked me with the wii-dildo, FOISTING a frigging violent wii-mote shake as well as nunchuck navigation... i can't fuckin operate under those conditions (looks like my ghetto stopgap bit me in the arse) hand-eye co ordination went down the shitter, and the rsi stacks up no end. (the next person IRL to say 'practice makes perfect' for this instance, will find themselves in dire straits) so, can't really play the game, it's completely counter-intuitive controller methods, no pad support..PRICKS! (thanks for ruining TOS2 for me. oh wait, there's the ps3 version...but no english text locale last i checked, if there was, the TOS bit wouldn't be here) ... no, haven't got a problem with sega as a name, just fanboys. (mario is pretty sweet, the older ones that is, and sonic is an amphetamines freak, good guy!) can't compare the two, the are different in too many way....but at least sonic doesn't go limp at the dick and lose his woman to the shellback with an 'ivan-even-bigger-tool'..:smile-new: ... the latest mario and sonic games, didn't really give em the full biz to be critical, so i'll bug-out on that note. :witless:
For the same reason anyone can and does hate something: no one likes everything and 'liking' is subjective, so you'll always find people that like and people that hate something. Need more specifics? -Fanboyism -Trolling -Because they grew-up with Nintendo HW / Games -Because one (or more) actions taken by Sega caused the person(s) to hate the company/games -etc I haven't looked into it, but I'm sure if you lookup videos about people bashing Sega and people bashing Nintendo, the percentage would probably be near 50/50.
That was not a good video. One of the things that bugged me the most was the spec list. He rounded up the SNES cpu speed and rounded down the Genesis. The Genesis was still higher, so why do that other than to irk people who know these things? For the SNES resolution, he only listed it's "hi-res" mode as if it's the standard one used in most games. It's not, that specific graphics mode only allows for one hi res 15 color background layer with low res sprites. It was rarely used. That was a stupid attempt to make the SNES look better to the uninformed. As someone else stated, he gave the SNES the win for backwards compatibility because of some cheap Chinese NOAC clone from the 90s that fits in the SNES cart slot and pretty much ignored that the Genesis contains all the SMS hardware inside it. Whether or not he likes the SMS (I doubt he does, the fanboy) that's true backwards compatibility. I haven't watched that video in a long time, but that's what I specifically remember from it. He's still completely biased, but he tried his best to hide it and left a bunch of easter eggs for the informed. IDK if it was the same video, but I remember James and maybe Mike comparing the libraries and they put Streets of Rage 1 against Final Fight 1-3. They didn't bring in SoR 2 or 3. It could be neither of them own them, it wouldn't surprise me. SoR1 destroys any FF, IMHO so it's a moot point. But yeah, Sega hate is way too much of a thing on the interweb. A lot of it does have to do with James, but so many popular youtube personalities are just as bad. This sums up the peanut gallery's views on Sega: The SMS is that shitty console with no zelda or mario that the NES crushed, the Genesis is that weak piece of shit that only had Sonic, the Saturn is completely ignored (if you actually compared the Saturn vs N64 libraries, the Saturn wins hands down, which is why I think it's rarely talked about in detail), and the Dreamcast is the poster-child for failure and doom that killed the company. The only prominent youtube people I can think of that don't drink the "Sega is inferior" kool aid are Game Sack, Mark from CGR, Happyconsolegamer, and Steve Benway.
