First batch will be sold exclusively here on AssemblerGames and on XBMC4Xbox. If everyone play nice and order 1-2 units max in the first run most should get one!
Hi there, Small status update to show I'm still alive. Things have been moving quite slowly for the past weeks and I'm sorry. I had to do a lot of overtime at work lately and when you write code for 10+ hours a day, you kind of want to put that aside when you're back home! I wanted to release a new version of the OS but I have a few bugs I found which I'd rather solve before release so it's going to take a few more days! Plus, my main dev rig died on me a couple of weeks ago so I must fall back on programming on my old Dell mini 10v netbook most of the time! I've been looking for a replacement laptop but I cannot put my mind on what I should buy. If you have any idea please do tell me. I'm looking for a powerful laptop, Core i7 for sure, 15 inch LCD max, built strong but not too heavy. I usually keep my computers for a very long time. I figured a gaming laptop would be great to be able to play some games on it too. I'm looking to spend between $1K-1.5K USD for it. So far, the Lenovo Y50 with UHD screen seems cool altough build quality might be not so great. Then, there's the 2015 Alienware 15 but it looks big and heavy. I never bought an Alienware; are they good quality laptops? If you have any insight on a potential candidate please do tell me!
(redacted to help thread size and look) I only bought a real laptop last year, but after seeing many friends and gamers buying laptops and shitting on others. Lenovo's are great productifity tools when you dont look too much at the looks (there are the classic IBM series, like the THinkpads and Edge series) Also some powerfull ones have the great IBM build quality in them, I got a Edge 530(3 years old wtf) anyway realy look at the specs and buildquality, my girlfriends ideapad U330 realy sucks (looks nice) its just two pieces of aluminium with the motherboard between (it already kinda broke twice and i kinda fixed it) i7 doesnt say alott, the other cpu numbers say alott more, my old i7 is probebly slower and/or less powerfull an recent i5 maybe a i3. (dint knew this when buying my laptop ) Alienware, seen great looking ones, hear alott of power. "Portable gaming" ... problem could be batterylife.. heavy... no personal experiance, friends like it, and do programming on it. Im always on the move so I dont think a Alienware will be my thing, If gamejams and gaming realy realy mattered I might look for a alienware. Good luck deciding, better take a bit more time than rush and buy a hatemachine, Nico EDIT: if you look up my specs, I upgraded the RAM with a 8G stick and because there is no 3G adapter, Ive added a msata SSD in that PCIe slot. STill got my DVD writer, HDD of 350G and now a SSD of 120. WARNING: Lenovo uses WHitelists on most of their laptops now. They want you to buy their wificards, there are some hacks availeble, but I still need to do it to mine. If you plan on using lenovo or other big brand, check for this EVIL whitelist thing, its stupid, I understand their standpoint, but I hate it. anyway, also buy one pretty quick, say, this year. MS is trying to help companies lock other OSes out, so if you like trying linux or wanna swap WIndows... Secureboot is nice, if you can turn it off when YOU want too.
Benny Great to hear you are still with us! Totally understand mate - if you are coding all day long then you have got to have a bit of a break from it. Having said that, I am really looking forward to the updated OS whenever it is ready. Talking of which, any chance of a copy of what you have got so far, to have a play with? So far as a new laptop - it is always a tough choice and what Nico said is a great reminder that we can be left with something that we don't actually like and for along time. I spent ages looking for a new laptop late last year and I finally settled on a Lenovo Ideapad Z710. The spec was good for the money - pretty powerful and full HD display. It always runs cool and really quiet even when playing a game or running Heavyload. The mousepad and keyboard are nice, though as mine is a 17", the keys are spaced a bit apart so that took some getting used to - you probably won't have the same issue on a 15". Build quality is good but it does look like it will attract marks on parts like the lid top, but as you are like me and keep your PCs for a long while, I guess you look after your stuff so that probably won't be an issue. I love the fact that there is a big panel on the base, held in by just a couple of screws that gives access to all the important component including being able to easily clean out the fan/heatink ducts. My biggest gripe is no HDD light on the front trim. So far as Alienware is concerned, they sure do have a good reputation but they were just too expensive for me and the models I looked at didn't have a DVD drive which I still use. Hope that is helpful. Best regards, Mark
Version 0.3Beta should come out soon. I have almost every bug I found fixed. To build your own version, you can always download the VM I uploaded, update the project from HEAD revision in Eclipse and run make to build a working image. This will generate a "crcwell.bin" file in the "image" folder in the root of the project that you can flash to your modchip. Be warned that the coded pulled from git is in development and can be (partly) broken at times. Right now it is in fairly good shape because of the impending release but it'll start to get messy again as soon as v0.3 is out. That's why I don't make frequent public releases. If you still want to go through with this, I would suggest you look for a file named "config.h" and at the bottom of it, change "#define DEV_FEATURES 1" to "#define DEV_FEATURES 0" if it's not already the case. You should also comment out (using "//") "#define SPITRACE" and "#define SPI_INT_TRACE" again if it's not already the case. That should remove most of the WIP features. Of course you need to make the changes to "config.h" before compiling.
Benny, I just purchased a new laptop from the UK company PC Specialist. They build Clevo/Sager laptops with high quality parts, I spent about £650 on my rig with an i7 2.5GHz, GTX 850, and 8gb of HyperX impact. If this rig was purchased with corporate branding and an OS it would have cost me around a grand! I'm super happy with it, and feel that apart from the sound it is top-notch. I understand places in North America also build these rigs, and I highly suggest you look into them. PS. Still super exited about the chip! I think it is soooo cool that somebody is finally doing this! Keep up the good work man! Looney
Thanks for the advice, I thought custom laptops were a thing of the past. I guess I'll try to look for a company that does the same thing here in Canada! That's a novel idea. Certainly fitting since it's from the same guy who made Xbox hacking possible! However, I'm looking for a machine with more power and most importantly, x86 compatible architecture!
Its a cool "laptop", but i dont think it just a programming platform. Its more for testing and reverse engineering things like hardware. I dont have much money for it, but I know one who ordered one. Because of the amount of attension it got im afraid alott of people buying it because its "cool" but dont actualy know what to do with it. (thats also why I cant get the money for it, sure I can borrow or save some, but what is my use for it? ) See it as a FPGA on steroids, if you dont know what a fpga is, dont buy it. and you can get fpga's and clpds very cheaply, so for a starterkit its also out of the question. But what if you gonna revervse a XBox one, or want to sniff the Xbox LPC bus? well, than it is probebely powerfull enough. And its portable, so its handy for in the field. I just wait till I see that one guy bring it to show what he can do with a novena, cause I know bunny can do alott of awesome stuff, but my neighbor with a Raspberry is just watching pirated movies (why buy a raspberry for that?) and im afraid some of the novena's will be turned into "laptops".
Well it's done. I bought a Eurocom M5 Pro (Clevo P650SE) for a very good price. Upgraded CPU to i7-4720HQ instead of i7-4710HQ. Neat thing with Eurocom's version of the Clevo is they supply it with the IPS screen by default. I'm supposed to get it by the end of next week. I'm so excited! As for the OS update, it's going well! A few more tests and I should upload it tomorrow. There might be some missing documentation for more advanced features in the wiki but I'll work on it as soon as I have my laptop with a full sized keyboard!
