I've played the Wii on numerous occasions at my friends house and can honestly say I'm underwhelmed with it.:banghead: Don't be calling me a troll either. This thread is about opinions and I stated mine.
xbox360 should probably top the list of worst consoles, whats the life expectancy on those things two maybe three minutes? Nintendo NES deserves some attention, brand new i had never ending problems with the cartridge connector toaster contraption. the first PS2 models functioned better as a lint trap than a gaming console i had an xbox actually catch fire, that might be an isolated case i dont know. xbox360 by far the worst console though.
It's unfair to be negative about a machine in terms of non exclusive games, Marty and 3do had the best versions of some titles, or the only home versions for a while, just because we have emulation now we can't discredit those machines, you could put that message at the PC Engines door, but of course, we don't. Playdia gets my vote, I've never played one because I'm an English guy who can't speak Japanese therefore I actually can't use the system because of the nature of it's titles.
I'm reading that right now, thanks. It also led me to this article on the VCS which covers a lot of the ground that Racing the Beam" does, but having been written in 1983 it has an interesting contemporary slant. I'd recommend Racing the Beam to anyone here, incidentally - it's high on technical details and somewhat academic in its presentation, but if you can cope with that it's a fascinating read.
I agree - if you have any technical understanding of programming you'll get a kick out of that book. It's fascinating to read how developers worked around the shortfalls of a system unlike nowadays where you're often totally spoilt.
Just to add, I don't have any solid programming experience but that book still hooked me in. The take home for me was the realisation that essentially the console essentially thinks it's playing Pong all the time. I know that's a trivialisation, but it's relatively accurate. It's unbelievable what was coaxed out of the system in its later years. Do you know any similar books, mooseblaster? I'm always on the lookout for more like that.
Would you seriously play a Sega Pico? The answer is probably not, and in the same token the Playdia is the same thing. It was a console aimed at young children and does not really have anything that can really be classified as a good game.
So much wrong with this entire rambling statement that I am afraid to even get started. Seriously. The 360? The NES? Yep.. Them Mercedes Benz deals sure are shit too. I once knew a guy who had one that had a flat tire! What a piece of crap!
Personally Xbox, always pissed me off. My drive door gets stuck and the first controller was horrible. I could of just gotten a bad system.
So wait, are we talking about the worst console in terms of software line-up, or in terms of the build quality of the hardware? There seems to be two different discussions here.
If I factor the expectation coming from the ancestor system and the library quality then PC-FX must be one of the worst. I mean the successor of PCE had only one goddam shmups, despite the genre been niche at that point that consideration is still hilarious. This is a widespread bullshit passed as a fact by "the internet". Yokoi stayed at Nintendo for more than 30 years and his dream was to retire at 50 to found a little company specialized in little quirky things. He actually delayed his plan by a few years because he wanted to release the VB. Yokoi and Yamauchi were actually friends and he retired in good terms with Nintendo. Well I just buy the good games for my systems so I don't really care for lesser games. Wii has some good games, mostly Nintendo ones or niche games from japanese companies.
How can people seriously answer the NES, Xbox, 360, Wii to this question?! They all have atleast one very enjoyable tripel-A game, whereas I could think of several systems with exclusively unplayable games.
The vast majority of consoles mentioned in this thread have more than a handful of decent games released for them. For me, the worst console ever would have to be a console with no redeeming factors, literally no games worth owning for the console. The likes of the CD32, 32X etc., for all the problems they have, hardly fit that description.
Out of the systems I've played, I'm going to have to go with Game.con myself. I don't see what's so bad with the Virtual Boy as some have said, I played it a couple times in the past and I thought it was pretty neat. I don't have anything but newer systems now-a-days though. PS3, PS2, PSP, Xbox, Xbox 360, Nintendo GC, Nintendo Wii, NDSL, and I pretty much enjoy them all. Although, in terms of online play, and any game that's on the PC and the consoles at the same time, PC all the way.
