Agreed there, Sonic Boom was the last straw for a lot of longtime Sonic the Hedgehog fans that were hoping the company would start treating their characters properly again. Nobody was demanding a reboot from a series that, well, Sega kept trying to apparently reboot and fail time and again. Then again they haven't been the sharpest tools in the shed over the last few years either. They killed a ten year old labor of love for their Streets of Rage franchise, one that actually had a ton of depth and would've been easy money for them to offer to license or treat in a similar manner to that Sonic CD remake, and then re-released a crappy port on iPhone and iPod that ultimately nobody gave a real damn about. To this day, thinking about that still grinds my gears.
You can still find the Streets of Rage remake if you look hard enough. That was Sega Europe though, they're the assholes of the Sega family.
Speaking of Sega and Streets of Rage: How about the time Sega of Japan proposed a new SoR for the Dreamcast but Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum at Sega of America (aka Peter Moore and Charles Bellfield) shot it down because they didn't know what SoR was. I strongly dislike Bernie Stolar, but I seriously hate Peter Moore.
I was pretty sad when I discovered they at least had a tech demo of the SoR reboot and those two made that decision. I thought SoR was relatively popular in the US. SoR2 is considered one of the best beat-em-ups and I've personally put hours on end into that game. I feel like they could have made it similar to Dynamite Cop, just longer. But alas, not to be.
Let's just go ahead and add Microsoft's handling of the Phantom Dust reboot to the pile: http://kotaku.com/how-a-small-game-studio-almost-made-it-big-1696997142 Microsoft is so stupid... so very very stupid...
So, I played Sonic Boom, rented it for my Wii U, and I really didn't think it was as terrible as it's been made out to be. Is it good? Good Lord no, but it's not Sonic 06. At least I could finish the first level without it glitching out and killing me over and over. I read that, and seriously? They killed it over $2 million? They've probably spent more than that marketing Halo 5 already.
Did they patch the horrendous framerate drops? Because this game had probably the worst I've ever seen in a console title.
If you want a bad framerate in a console game, try building a lag machine in Halo 3/Reach/4's forge modes on the Xbox 360. Step 1: Spawn as many fusion coils as you can in an enclosed structure. Step 2: Set them all to instantly respawn. Step 3: Light the match. Step 4: Grab some popcorn and watch as these fusion coils explode the instant they spawn. (Optional) Step 5: ??? (Optional) Step 6: Profit! If done correctly, expect an unstable framerate between 0-15 FPS.
Nintendo: Censorship policies Sony: Removing raw PS2 support in the PS3 (it had to be done :'( ) Microsoft: Probably the push towards Kinect and how they raped Rare because of it Sega: Not bringing great games from Japan over to Saturn/DC due to Bernie Stolar/Peter Moore
I remember when Sonic Boom was in development someone here posted a thread showing pictures of presumably a member of the development team playing an early version of the game. The frame rate at the bottom left was around 13-14. Never did leap over the healthy framerate hurdle, did they? I also heard its not as bad as was made out to be. It definitely didn't seem as broken as the gaming media advertised it to be.
I heard they released a patch about a couple months ago that fixed some bugs and increased performance. I also heard the 3DS version was really good.
Gotta give them credit for improving it then. Still, whoever thought a Sonic game should have boring beat-em-up combat was completely wrong.
Just a rant of course. Capcom changing Dead Rising 1's General look For the E3 showcase and Retail game. The Beta and Alphas had a darker tone, scarier looking zombies, less comedic input, and a less cocky looking/sounding frank. Game had better animations for nearly everything. Player & zombies. The zombies walked very, VERY slow, unlike the final game. which added a very classic feeling to the game. They FUUUUCKED up the final game. plain and simple.
As if they didn't already learn that lesson from Sonic Unleashed's poorly received Werehog sections. So that's why you so actively seek the pre-release versions of DR. I was always curious.
I can't really think of much beyond region locking, especially on new consoles. Back in the day we'd get games much later than the rest of the world because Australia uses the PAL system. That meant we'd have to wait for all those translations into European languages we don't speak to play a game. I didn't think it could be any more annoying but along came the 3DS. Why add it to your handheld when everyone else is going the other way?
Iwata: WHY? Because fuck you that's why. Miyamoto: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA now play new Mario I made it has 1 new power up. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH No FZERO FOR YOU BAKA GAIJIN.
Lucky you Aussies had an uncensored Castlevania: Dracula X (aka Vampire's Kiss) for SNES. Us American's weren't that lucky
