In hexen there is a folder called stock files or something, it contains a copy of C and E drive when you are coping the files across delete the cache on E also.

i had this same issue today trying to soft mod an xbox that had been un soft modded. Also delete c:/backup too

thats what I did on mine as it was giving me the same rename error you had (kinda funny actually)

    Hi

Now it seems its completely bricked, it does not boot into spinter cell anymore, when you power it on. It shows error 16.

I cant believe I bricked another one...

I guess there is nothing else I can do here, apart from buying some special hardware, or connecting the hdd to my pc, which I can to, as I have no IDE connection.

This happened after I removed the power cable to connect my other working xbox, to see the file structure, I wanted to compare. Now it doesnt boot at all anymore. Apparently something to to with the clock....

Luckily I did copy the eeprom back up to my pc before doing all this, if that means anything.

    Thanks

    Unfortunately I dont.

If I was to get one, how hard would it be to fix this?

Are you thinking about hotswap? Would hotswap work with usb to ide?

My other xbox is showing error 5, which is similar to error 16 from what I have been reading.

Do you think that with buying this adapter, and following this tutorial, I can recover both consoles?

It should work, basically what needs to be done is an hdd rebuild.
Unlock a hdd and re copy over the dash files. You said you already have the EEPROM, correct?

You could hot swap the hdd with the PC and access files using xplorer360 in windows
Or hot swap with xbohdm but I don't know if usb is supported that way (give it a go, maybe with a blank hdd)

For one, yes I have EEPROM, for the other I dont.

But, by looking at the guide, I linked above, they can be both recovered via hot swap, is that right? Even the one that I dont have the EEPROM for.

Most likely I will buy a cheap PCI IDE card, and do a hotswap with xboxhdm.

Hot swap will work if you have the motherboard it's paired too, boot xbox with hdd attached, xbox will unlock disk, hot swap hdd with PC

Thank you for helping me with all this.

In that tutorial that I linked above, it is mentioned that you must create an ISO file, by running an app, and then burn this image to a DVD. My question is (since I have no pc with a dvd drive), can this not be done by booting from a usb stick?

I mean making a bootable memory stick, and then copying the required ISO onto it?

    Cheers

    Thanks!

I have just tested this today, and I managed to boot fine with xbhdm.

Now, lets just hope the PCI IDE card detects my hdd fine, and all goes as planned.

    I purchased this card today.

This is what you recommended, so I went for it?

    I have another question.

Am I able to connect the xbox hdd to my pc via the IDE card, and retrieve the EEPROM, using Explorer 360?

    Thanks

    Hi

    I am from New Zealand.

Ok, so I don't know how to do this via xbhdm, but I was thinking of just hooking up the hdd to my pc, and then using Xplorer to grab EEPROM.

Yes, I backed up the EEPROM and copied it to E partition, before I fiddled with the mod.

I am confused actually, the tutorial that I linked above, is about building HDD from scratch, without needing to have EEPROM at all. All you have to do is copy the latest MS dash files into C folder, build an iso, and run it. It sounds easy.

So, why the need for eeprom at all? Does it make the process a bit smoother/faster, if you you have it? Is there more work involved when you are building hdd from scratch? Does maybe having EEPROM, lets the user preserve some valuable files, but building hdd from scratch would wipe the whole hdd clean?

Option 1: Put EEPROM bin file in EEPROM folder, make iso and run.
Option 2: If you dont have eeprom, put latest MS dash files in C folder, make iso and run.

Hope I am not confusing you with my questions!

    Thanks

If you build a HDD without your XBOX's eeprom it won't be recognized by your box.

1.Retrieve the eeprom, make an ISO with it using the tools in this xbhdm package:

    http://www.theisozone.com/downloads...c-partition-for-building-hd-from-scratch-usa/

    2.Burn it onto a CD.

3.Connect a compatible HDD (set to master) to a PC with at least 2 IDE channels

    4. In PC bios, set 1st boot option as CD/DVD

5.Power up the PC, XBHDM should run, choose the build new HDD option and follow instructions here:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/threads/upgrading-hd-on-softmodded-xbox-tutorial.368674/

6.Reinstall HDD in XBOX, don't screw the cover on until you've tested it.

    Thank you for your help!

I managed to access the hdd with Xplorer and retrieve the EEPROM.

This particular console I only unlocked the hdd one day, thinking that this will help me in some way, I was wrong.

Now, when I boot into XBHDM, and select option 3 to lock the hdd, I get an error message saying "Linux CD not found".

The EEPROM has copied to the respective folder, I created the iso, and burned it with IMG burn.

    Any ideas guys?

This is becoming way more complicated than I should have been, a kinda now regret modding these consoles in the first place.

I guess the next thing would be to follow the guide you linked to the letter, but when I accessed the hdd with Xplorer, I get; partition 0, partition 1, partition 3 and partition 4.

Which one is C, and which one is E?

    Thank you

I have also noticed that I cannot get my bios to detect xbox hdd.

There is also no option to set anything to master/slave, only boot priority.

Switching between AHCI and IDE in mobo settings, didnt make any difference.

    Thanks

You don't need your old C and E drives, everything you need except your unique eeprom is included in the download I linked to.

Setting the HDD status is done mechanically with a small plastic jumper block that bridges 2 of 10 pins on the end of the drive, it will look something like this:

There will be a diagram on the drive label telling you where to place the jumper to set the drive to Master.

If the PC bios doesn't "see" the HDD (unlikely in my experience" you can try hot-plugging the ide cable into the powered drive when you have the XBHDM menu displayed,

JUST TO BE CLEAR! You should chose the "build new drive from scratch" option, don't try just locking your old, possibly corrupted HDD. Start fresh, follow the instructions, it should work.

    Thanks for your help!

Sorry forgot to mention, the jumper has already been set to master.

The PC definitely does not detect the xbox drive, which is weird, as I could access it trough windows with Explorer 360. I know this because I have everything else disconnected, but the DVD drive, and I cant see any hdd in bios. I am using a PCI IDE card, as my motherboard does not have any IDE connectors.

Ok, I will try and build a new hdd from scratch when I get home from work today, but I have a feeling, I will not be able to move forward until I sort out this "linux cd not found" error.

In the back up folder, where I found EEPROM back up, there are a bunch of other files too

    Thanks!
