Is your DVD drive not plugged into an IDE channel? Just get a twin connection IDE cable and hook the DVD and XBOX HDD up to the same channel - it can take a master and slave device. You may need another PC power supply to power the HDD.

Just ignore them, you only need the eeprom, the other files are you HDD key and something else I forget, XBHDM doesn't require them to build and lock your drive.

Nope, I have a sata dvd drive.

I purchased a standalone PCI IDE Card, to connect xbox hdd.

No matter what I do, the hdd is just not being detected in PC BIOS. Today I tried using xbhdm 2.2, which works off the USB Stick, and it boots fine, but when I try to lock the hdd, it just says "no drive found".

I think this is the main problem, and needs to be sorted first?

For xbhdm to detect the hdd, it must be detected in BIOS, right?

I am doing all this while xbox hdd is completely separated from xbox, does it need to boot through xbox initially, and then hot swaped to pc, for xbhdm to work?

    Thanks

if the hdd is locked the bios cant read it, you have to hot swap the hdd between the xbox and PC.

    Here is what you do;

    Turn PC on
    Boot to XBHDM
    Boot Xbox with HDD connected
disconnect just the ide cable from xbox hdd
Connect IDE cable going from PC to XBOX HDD

You have to do this before XBHDM times out and scans for new disks

    I've been away...

I'll tell you what, I can dump the hdd key and build a new HDD for you for free, all I ask is you just pay the postage both ways.. I'm in Australia so post isn't crazy. :)

IF the disk is a Western Digital drive you can also try this:

some HDD's have a "self destruct feature" which can be used to remove HDD key (at the same time erases all data), however I think thats only on a few Segate drives

Hi, I thought you have given up on me.... :)

I have just tried what you suggested above, and still no luck. The drive is definitely "unlocked", because that is how it got screwed up in the first place.

As soon as the main menu of xbhdm comes up, I power up the xbox, wait for a few secs, then disconnect the IDE cable from hdd, and connect IDE from PCI IDE Card to xbox hdd, this is all done before xbhdm boots into option 1 (VGA console, or something like that) by default, and then I press 3, to boot into "lock/unlock" drive options.

Howerver, when using xbhdm 1.9, I am greeted with this message

When using xbhdm 2.2 (USB version), this message comes up.

Can you also confirm, that in your case, xbox hdd is visible in BIOS?

I might take you up on that offer (sending drives to oz), if it doesn't work out in the end.

    Thank you!

XBHDM should actually bypass the BIOS...

Try hot swapping but whilst in the bios ie:

    Power PC (enter bios)
    Power Xbox
Disconnect Xbox hdd from console (ide only) and plug into PC IDE
Exit Bios (Not saving settings, if you hit the reset button it will cut power from IDE and may make HDD lock up)
Load XBHDM (either USB or via cd, if via cd have CD drive set too SLAVE)

The Via chipset (your PCI card) might not be supported by the USB version of xbox HDM (no drivers).

    ---------

Yeah well you can send just the mobo and i'll extract the Drive key. If you send the HDD with it I'll set up the disk ready to go..

OR just tsop it for you...

I have the drive keys already extracted I think. This is automatically done, when you do EEPROM back up, right? Need to check on this.

In step 4, you mean, to exit bios by pressing reset button?

Thats the thing, I cant see any primary/slave settings in my mobo bios settings. I can only set boot priorities.

Might go to the flea market tomorrow, see if I can find a cheap old Athlon machine, with IDE ports.

    Thanks

Have you tried connecting the drive after XBOXHDM has booted?

When it boots to the main menu?

    Yes, many times.

It seems that I definitely need an IDE machine, I mean a mobo with IDE DVD and hdd connection.

dont press reset just choose exit with out saving changes..

the VIA ide chipsets are supported in DOS but might no be supported under linux, thats why the usb version isnt working for you..

There should be jumpers on the pci ide card, what are they set too

    Jumpers as per photo.

I thought they are only for SATA and nothing to do with IDE?

    Thanks

I've built hard drives on machines with both SATA and IDE channels by using the method I detailed above, having your optical drive and HDD on the same channel, but I doubt XBHDM is going to support an all-SATA mobo, even with a PCI adapter installed. The linux simply wasn't coded to expect that hardware.

Surely you can find an old dual IDE tower in someone's basement or garage, it need be nothing special, I'm pretty sure I've completed this process successfylly on a pentium II in the past.

This is really such an easy process, and you are needlessly complicating it by using the wrong equipment.

    Thats it.

I am on the hunt now, for an old IDE machine, believe it or not, they are not as easy as I thought it will be, to find.

I am after AMD machine (apparently AMD works better with XBHD), and mobo with minimum two IDE slots.

    Thanks

Intel machines may freeze the drive, but easily worked around.

Like HEXIGON and LeHaM said, don't get hung up on finding a whole working AMD tower, you need the bare bones, an optical drive and a little bit of RAM. I've always used Intel machines, the freezing issue with Intel based PCs is well documented and just requires you to hot plug your HDD after initial menu selection.

    Hi Guys

I am still having issues with this unfortunately. I got an AMD machine, with two IDE slots and IDE DVD RW drive. Now DVD Drive gets detected fine in xboxhdm.

I have managed to rebuild the drive completely, however I cannot seem to be able to lock the hdd now.

When I try to lock it, I get the following message.

    Thank you!
