I was capturing some video footage of Dreamcast Soul Calibur for Retro Core 6 today and I couldn't get over how lovely it still looks 8 years later after release. The shots below are taken from a MPEG2 video recorded through shitty composite and yet they still look nice. Run Soul Callibur through VGA and I'm sure it can give the new HD 360 version a good run for it's money. What other games that are almost a decade old or older still look good to you? Let us know. Yakumo
Funny you should say that because I put Dead or Alive 2 on right after Soul Calibur to see how it compared. Over all it does look nicer but there's just something about Soul Calibur's character textures that makes them look that little bit special. Yakumo
Apart from the occasional slowdown, Ikaruga is another Dreamcast game that I think looks quite good all these years later. Of course, the worst frame rate drops occur when you finish off the bosses, though few will ever get to see this so why am I really complaining? Although I always preferred Virtua Fighter 3tb (which some of you may have noticed - I do go on about this one nearly all of the time!), there's no doubt that Soul Calibur is still quite a stunner in the HD era...
I'm afraid I've to disagree, it doesnt looks as good as it used to. IMO is all because it used to be the highend game of the day, the benchmark, pretty much what GoW or Crysis are now, and after seeing such levels of detail is like if you suddently were able to notice the SD texture, and low (for these days) poly count. But if you compare it to current PS2 and Wii games, I'll say it does look good.
You know, I was asking myself that very same question when playing Ikaruga the other day! Maybe if the same doesn't happen through emulation we could find a possible answer...
I still think Dead or Alive 2 looks quite nice. Are we only talking 3d here?.....because there are a lot of Saturn 2d games that look great.
They don't do it justice. The VGA on the dreamcast is amazing. I find DOA2, Soul Calibur and Jet Set Radio look amazing. SEGA Rally 2 looks good - but the frame rate isn't right (as we all know). There are many Saturn games that look good, for sure, but the DC really pushed it: Space Channel 5 Rez Shenmue Virtua Tennis & Striker games looks great Sonic Adventure Powerstone 2 great looking games
super mario 64, conker's bad fur day (n64) Donkey Kong Country 3 Wind Waker quite a few others that don't come to mind
super mario 64 > Not really conker's bad fur day (n64) > IF you play any other N64 first, it does look good Donkey Kong Country 3 > LOL WUT? Wind Waker > Agree
I know people are talking about DC games here. Anyway, some games that still impresses me today are Soul Edge, Crash Bandicoot series (on the PS1), Gran Turismo 3 (The first one of the series with OMG graphics), not to mention Metal Gear Solid series, Wipeout XL and 3. Super Mario 64 still makes some people go "WOW" today. Games like Ferrari 355 Challenge. Racing Jam (Arcade) on it's DX cabinet with parabolic screen is amazing too.
Yep, Dreamcast became retro a long time ago  Funny really when the PlayStation 2 isn't counted as retro. yakumo
Soul Calibur looks great on VGA still. The only thing I really noticed that was a bit older was some of the animations; characters stare forward like there dead, stuff like that that's not around today, but it still rocks. The 360 XBL HD one is nice too.
to push it even further down the road of time ... Ballblazer and Karateka on Atari 8bit aged very well (compared to their C64 counterparts at least ) and Vectrex-games thanks to the vector display are still very playable as well ... (not even talking about the Tempest arcade-machine ... my favorite of all times) but on Dreamcast I definitly would say (all of which have been mentioned): REZ Space Channel 5 Soul Calibur
