For these games there are linux solutions that will run at these refresh rates. Of course, w/ everything in Linux, they take way more time to deal with. I might get around to a setup one day. My point was more for console emulation though, where standards are adhered to much more strictly. I'd rather see sequels w/ the original style of gameplay. Too many bad/cheap remakes, and way too many collections these days.
When it comes to emulation, I'm kinda unique, All but a few of my roms (the exceptions being pd/made available by developer [Robotech:Crystal Dreams as an example]) were dumped by me on my dumping equipment/my friends dumping equipment. My stance on emulation is if you don't dump it from your own copy or if its not legally available, its bad. And really besides a couple games i keep on my laptop for playing while traveling, I never even play the roms.
I figure this is relevant: What happens when open source emulation code is stolen more or less, and used in commercial products? Pay for MAME anyone? Thread 1 Thread 2
Well, it's illegal. MAME team's activities are probably pretty questionable too though, so... And yeah, I know emulators themselves aren't illegal (unless they contain copyright code like a BIOS), but I wonder how many MAME developers can genuinely claim not to have any illegal ROMs on their computers. To be honest, if it was my code I'd be more annoyed at people selling it on ebay.
I think there are genuine benefits for emulations and ROM archives (a lot of the MAME ROMs are backing up arcade boards that might never been seen again in 20 more years or so), but as often happens, the whole practice is abused and becomes a piracy issue.
Rubbish! Pussers is the best (but expensive away from the UK) or perhaps Cruzan's Single Barrel. I also recommend Captain Morgan's Private Stock - so smoooooooth, nice bottle, not too pricey (~$25).
just checking to be safe! Bacardi Oro (gold in spanish) isn't half bad, but I still prefer Mount Gay Spiced over it. unless of course.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacardi_151
Putting this topic back up. Latest MAME (.114) has Virtua Racing finally playable. It's not 100% perfect, but i had a blast playing it last night. Works great on my ancient PC (AMD 3200+ , GeForce FX5600 + 512mb Ram). The PS2 port (Sega Ages / Sega Classics Collection), which i have, is considered the best home port, but it's nowhere near as good as the arcade. Anyway, it brought back memories from the Arcades on the early 90's, specially the first time i saw a 4 Linked Virtua Racing cabinets + the Extra TV that showed the broadcast of the race.
Sweet. Glad to hear you had fun playing Virtua Racing Johnny. My stance on emulation. Well, I will be honest. I love it. I think its a great way to keep classics alive. Games that might become, "extinct" so to say. Like someone mentioned earlier, MAME is great because it allows users to play old arcade games that cant even be found anywhere. Plus, emulators allow for certain tools to be used that would be near impossible on real consoles. Such as modifying games and adding new features or changing stuff around. I love playing Super Metroid Hacks for the Super NES. It also allows for people to create awesome TAS's (Tool-assisted-Speedruns) that show how fast a game can be accomplished. I dont know. I could list tons of reasons why I think emulation is awesome. I could also list reasons why its bad and I understand why peoples views differ so much on emulation. But I Love It! :icon_bigg
Yes, ever since i got Sega Classics Collection i play Virtua Racing as much as i can. Can't explain, but i love that game (even with the annoying skitching noise they added on the PS2 version). But when i first ran the REAL arcade version on MAME, it was a great feeling. I also love emulation, specially on these cases of old games that you can't find anywhere. Arcade games bring back so many good memories, that i will be forever thankfull to all MAME devs (not just because Virtua Racing). I also use PGEN 1.51 to play Genesis/Mega Drive games on my PS2 and it's a very good emulator too. Anyway, i think that the real problem with emulation is the people that want to make money off it are the ones that never did anything to make it possible in the first place. Not to mention piracy itself and emulation of new consoles. You can disagree with me, but honestly i don't think i'm doing something wrong when i play Sonic The Hedgehog on PGen. Firstly because i owned tons of Sega stuff over the years (Master System, Mega Drive, GameGear,...) and spent lots of money on their arcades. I don't think that playing old games like that will make them go bankruptcy (well, maybe those latest Sonic games will).
It's a real gray area I'm trying to search for the court ruling about Roms. Basically there was a ruling a few years ago that Emulation is legal proivded the original means is obsolete
An update to my above post The DMCA allows it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMCA and if the big evil DMCA says it's ok THEN ITS OK!
we all know what the law states more or less (although the US laws don't apply to the rest of us fortunately for the most part), but laws aside I think emulation rocks, although nothing beats the original. When the original is not accessible though, emulation is the second best thing. Copyright interests my ass, we re talking pure nostalgic fun here
