I do like the idea and I love old school style 16 bit but not games and carts. But the Jaguar shell is such a put off. I think the Target audience for this are people who miss the old days and want physical copies of indie games, but not on existing Hardware. But again, the DESIGN I see it and I KNOW, Atari Jaguar why do want that? You see that shell what do you think? a failed console with 4 maybe 5 decent games, and instantly you assume that's all this system is going to amount to. The people behind it claim using the Jaguar shell saved them $300k but It can't be THAT expensive to do something else. At least rip off a system design people actually like.
Seeing that it uses Jaguar shells and looks almost identical to them (minus the color and any custom logos they use), would they get into legal trouble with Atari or what's left of them?
I honestly think they have such huge balls to attempt something like this, indie machine? Cart based? Goodluck with that.......
Well, you basically said what I wanted to. I and many others love retro games, and even enjoy the new games with that sort of style. However, making a console that will have a minuscule install base, no incentives to develop for it and non-existent reasons to even create this in the first place makes this thing a total failure before it begins. I LOVE cartridges, despite often being a pain in the ass to maintain, but I prefer my idea (which is also somewhat impractical) of having a game on a single SSD or flash storage device instead of an optical disc, since you'd have way more space for the game, therefore you could have more uncompressed content AND have an awesome physical medium. But guess what isn't happening? Physical games becoming bigger than they already are. It's cheaper to print discs and even cheaper to move to an all-digital solution (although I really don't think we've come far enough to go there yet, unless you're on a PC, which is a bit of a different case to a dedicated gaming console). This just smells of idiocy and incompetence, driven by some dude with the biggest nostalgia boner ever. There is no way this can succeed. That is, unless they combine the Jaguar and Jaguar CD shells to make one console and market it as the shittiest game console ever. Because, you know, it looks like a toilet. I'd like to know this myself. I assume they'd be using steel moulds, so they must have got ahold of an old Jaguar one to replicate instead of making one from scratch, which would be more expensive, but either way, they can't mass produce the thing with one mould. My assumption is that they're just using it because it's a cheaper option (i.e. the tooling is done; they just need to make copies, or perhaps they won't even bother with that), and are hoping Atari doesn't notice. To be fair, Atari has changed hands so many times, that they might have the right idea of getting away with it, but Atari is also one of those companies that don't have a lot of money and will do anything to get money. EDIT: "In order to house the new cartridge-based video game console, Kennedy's team has secured the rights and original molds to the cult favorite Atari Jaguar and will be using it for the RETRO VGS." WHY? It's not an original design, so people are already associating it directly with the pile of vomit that is the Jaguar. On top of that, the Jaguar doesn't have a cartridge door to keep dust out. Even the name, "RETRO VGS", is horrible. Step 1. Open Jaguar CD lid Step 2. ??? Step 3. Profit The name rings a bell but I'm not familiar with him as far as I know. Please enlighten us who don't know, oh great HEX1GON. Pretty sure all they have are small brains or a lack thereof. EDIT: There's some real interesting stuff about production on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/RETRO-VGS/783316545070951 Still, that controller is awful. It's literally a Super Nintendo controller fused with either a 360 controller or a Wii U Pro controller. Also, people have apparently ordered a whole bunch of limited edition console shells already. This whole thing boggles my mind. This, though... This amuses me: "We believe the best way to play this new wave of RETRO games is on a RETRO console with a proper classic controller, in front of a high-definition TV, with your friends and family." Oh, and if anyone wants another laugh, check out the video on the Facebook page where the steel moulds arrive. They have a HUGE truck for next to nothing. Idiots, the lot of them.
I fully suspect this thing to crash and burn. Good idea poor execution. I'm all for a new cart based console, but not to sound like a broken record first impression is everything and they didn't leave a good one.
Cart based? Do me a lemon. Ahahahahaha hahahaha hahaaaaa hahaha. *sits down for a minute* Woohahahahahahaha, hahahahaha hahahahaha *wipes tears of laughter from his eyes*
This is going to be like the Oton. It'll be hyped, and Hyped, and hyped, and hyped but never actually come out.
He's some YouTube nobody who thinks he's bigger than he really is. I know I sound sour but hear me out... To summarize because nobody likes to read a lot in 2015. Originally he added me on my personal Facebook. Suddenly he had a problem with me, and had a go at me through a message. It had something to do with his name, I think I mistyped it or something (really can't remember, it was years ago). So he deleted all my comments and he had a hissy fit and sent a huge wall of text at how it was mistyped and I should and I quote "NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!!1" Let's just say, he thinks he has authority over others. He instantly lost my support after that. So fuck him, acted so butthurt over the most smallest issue.
Never heard of the guy, but his IMDb page, which he obviously didn't write himself, is hilarious. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3710862/bio?ref_=nm_dyk_qt_sm
Agreed, they seem to have basically got some Jaguar shells, come up with a load of half baked ideas, and then gone off and done a load of promotional material and interviews that basically say "New consoles suxX0r lol, cartridges are awesome" I mean, console sales are driven by their games, right? And to have games you need good game developers. What developer in their right mind is going to develop a game for a system that has 0.0000001% market share as compared to Xbox/PS/Android/iOS etc. Also, lol:
That is exactly what I was going to say. This seems like it would just hemorrhage money. I doubt it gets very far. Dude seems like a tool. Then again, my knowledge is limited. His whole IMDb page just reeked of a superiority complex or how Encyclopedia Dramatica so eloquently put it, USI: Unwarranted Self Importance.
That controller is literally this: http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Controlle...d=1427423078&sr=8-1&keywords=pro+controller+u I don't see any other pictures, but they look identical, even down to the speaker holes by the thumbsticks. Also if it's supposedly 16 bit retro games, why even have thumbsticks?
I have a feeling this may be an elaborate scam. Why would they use a medical case from another system (one that failed miserably I might add), cartridges in this day and age, and a Wii U controller? Also if it use similar tech to the Genesis/Mega Drive and the SNES/SFC, it isn't powerful enough for devs to get interested in it. If an indie game dev wanted to make a game, they would do it on a platform that has a wider audience so it reaches more people. They wouldn't have to charge crazy prices because of cart manufacturing if they just released their game on Steam, eighth gen consoles, Android, and iOS. Also why not have thumbsticks Thumbsticks can be great for certain games like racing games and other games that benefit from analog control methods. If they really want 16-Bit games, why not just design the game like that on modern hardware? If they wanted to go even further and make it true 16-Bit games, they could have made these games for MS-DOS and then release them on GOG.com and Steam with a custom version of DOSBOX. There is no need to use carts. If they do go with it till the very end, it better have online capabilities that use modern broadband and not ancient 24K Dial-Up Modems.
TT - Atari sold the tooling to the dental company, along with the rights to use them. They hacked the end off and made a suction device or something like that. The dental company have been trying to sell the tooling for years. As for the guy, his vaguely referenced (company name only) websites and companies that could be anything - a shop, perhaps? Ultimately, he's clueless in how to make a real console - it takes a team years and millions of dollars to develop. I think he's trying to say that he used to hang out in arcades instead of getting a job, and got good at playing a few arcade machines. I see zero experience mentioned in hardware development. Somehow, he's got 67,000 Twitter followers. It's a joke. It'll never get off the ground... and at best, you'd probably get some crappy Retron-type thing. Announcing a Kickstarter way in advance is just attention whoring.
Retro that's because he follows everyone related to gaming under the son, and adds people on Facebook who may have games in their cover photo. It's how I found out about him, I didn't find out about by looking for YouTube channels or from a gaming forum. I think Yakumo has been playing games longer than him anyway, doesn't make you an expert on producing a console though.
Found the promo flyer for it. Looks like the dental company no longer uses the Jaguar shell for their current products.
I bet we all as a collective could pull a better system out of our ass. One that you know will actually come out. Reading this Tool's IMDB now Any asshole can be ordained by the ULC. Even me, I'm like a religious service personal Injury attorney. I'll do anything but a Bris, mostly because my hands aren't steady enough.
