He just isn't in depth enough for me to consider his videos a "review". Honestly I'm not sure how he has such a large subscriber base, I really don't.
Me either, His friends like Metal Jesus and the like are far more entertaining and fun to watch than he is. He also totally lacks any Charisma.
I used to love Gamester81's channel also. He had great consoles to show off and an impressive collection. I swear he must have every consolized MVS Neo Geo that they put out. He's definitely become a shill for whatever his current projects are and in some ways I find his channel fascinating in a love to hate kind of way. Countless people have asked him to create a new channel for just Collectervision but he refuses. He knows the main channel gamester81 gets the most views and he wants that advertising for his overpriced products. Anyways, I'm curious what hardware this new console will have. Gamester81 is porting one of his homebrew games to it so I'm guessing its going to have a low end pc inside so all of those steam indie games can be ported over easily like Broforce.
AWESOME POSSUM 2/ DR MACHINO'S MEAN BEAN MACHINE! Sorry, I just found a copy of Awesome Possum and totally realized how much of a ripoff it is of Sonic. Carry on. We mentioned it earlier, it's just a Wii U/Wii/Android controller you can buy at Target. They didn't design anything. Ummmm, Sonic CD and Symphony of the Night were pretty good, and they were on CD. And Virtua Racing was on the Saturn. Hell nowadays it would be even easier, if you put 2+GB of RAM in the console (a really cheap amount in 2015, prohibitively expensive in 1995) you could literally put the whole CD into the system RAM and not need any more loading screens.
They can't be serious with this, right? No one is going to make expansion chips for cartridges in 2015.
This caught my attention too. It makes no sense at all. This isn't the same era, the same reasoning doesn't apply there. I'm mainly just curious if they actually made a "retro" console or if it's just more ARM/PC crap in disguise. If it is actually has a cpu like a 68000, custom graphics chip, etc then it'll atleast be interesting in that regard.
Agreed, but we all know it's just going to be a ARM SoC stuffed into a Jaguar case. Typing that last sentence made me feel dirty and unclean.
I don't want to say we know that it is but it seems to be the most likely outcome. I want it to actually be a real system so that at least it can be somewhat interesting. Just taking a cartridge doesn't make it interesting. Maybe some of those supporting this idea are just really focused on that cartridge idea and thinking that is such a selling point.
The reason carts existed back in the day was because floppy drives were expensive and not that reliable. With a burned in rom on a cart, it was pretty indestructable and cheap. With Blu Ray drives in consoles, theres no reason to go to a cart. Most games take up only half of a blu ray size anyway. For a retro device, its basically a gimmick. The only way it would be interesting in a modern sense is if the cart had its own hardware inside that did something specific. Think of it like a Jamma board with the arcade board holding the game. Of course that would be insanely expensive for every game to have its own dedicated hardware board.
Not quite. The main reason was that copying a floppy was a pretty easy thing to do, plus the access time was slow and you were limited to 1.4MB. Carts were part of the mechanism that manufacturers used to ensure that any companies who wanted to make a game had to get that game manufactured by them, so they could take a slice of the profits. Sure, they dressed this up as "Because of the '84 video game crash we need to be able to control the quality of games released, here's the Nintendo Seal of Quality" but as evident in the large amount of shitty games available pre and post '84 we know this isn't true. The reason why I find their idea of using chips in carts as an expansion is that it doesn't make any sense. It made sense back when the SNES was around, because it was effectively 'life support' for 16bit consoles whilst newer designs with faster/better CPUs/GPUs were coming out. An Indie manufacturer selling themselves on the 'retro' angle does not need to have the capability of having a GPU on a cart, it should already be in the console.
I should remember to actually check back more than once every week or two... Oh well, long post ahoy! Oh, and on the subject of Gamester81, I agree with literally everything that has been said here.... which is unfortunate. I love how he's head of PR for this travesty. I don't like watching too many different people on YouTube talk about and play video games, because it can bore me at the best of times, but honestly, even though he sometimes gets some minor things wrong, I've found the Angry Video Game Nerd to be a great source of information. Then there's other stuff like Game Sack that I'd say is fantastic for more minute details. I'm still hoping they just stick a Titan in this thing and charge $5000 for it. Why? Just because. I want to see the reaction and consequences. It would be hilariously amusing to me. Someone please tell me I'm not the only one dying of laughter over these comparisons to.... whatever the hell that game of theirs is meant to be. Ah, of course. I thought it looked familiar. Apart from the SNES part, of course. I assume the thumbtacks are to made all of your 16-bit platforms feel realistic. You know, like how Final Fantasy VII is the best-looking game ever, with its gorgeous, high-res models and colourful backgrounds. Yeah, I went there. Part of me hopes this IS a scam, just so that anyone and everyone stupid enough to be a part of this crap gets a wake-up call. To the nuts. Ah, well, that explains how he got the steel moulds so easily. I bet that dental company was just thinking "OH HELL YES WE FINALLY FOUND SOME STUPID SUCKER TO BUY THIS CRAP!" But yeah, this thing is dead in the water. Well, aside from all the wackos going apeshit over it on Facebook. That's Facebook for you. Anyway, you're right, retro. This guy has no experience. I think he must have played too many fantasy games and started believing they were real life. I'm sorry, but NOTHING beats this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/543907327/help-finace-marvel-and-dcs-first-film-crossover-ap Read it all, watch the video, and prepare your cyanide pills for when you lose all faith in humanity. And no one remembers (or ever knew about) them. We all know this can only end one way. If you don't mind, I am going to sit here and continue mocking this whole thing. I don't care who is backing it - this whole thing is a mess. One would thing they would have called it "Adventure of the Tiny Knight" to make up for their obviously small penises. I don't know if you saw what I wrote in regards to this but.... DAMMIT WHY CAN'T THEY JUST DO THIS ALREADY?! Then we can have lots of cake and eat it, too. And then all be blue whales. No, you can't be an orca whale. He's too politically correct. Stupid PC bastard. We're trying to forget. That's why no one is talking about it. I say this with 150% sincerity: toppest kek
It'd make no sense to not make it ARM or x86, because I imagine very few developers would want to go through the trouble of porting their games to some weird architecture just for this system.
Retro gaming mag.......with a font made in cool text.............they went all out with the site design.
I'm sure it'll be ARM. And chances are it'll be as previously assumed some kind of SoC. So basically like that Retron 5 but without the emulators and atleast playing games people are interested in.
I missed the post you made before. Actually, I think it would be even better to use SD cards or something like the 3DS game cards - except none of the current gen consoles have card readers. A USB drive, though, is something they could do now. They could do it for PC games too. I guess the reason they don't do it is because there isn't much of an incentive for them. More people are buying games digitally, so I guess they don't want to put much money or research into physical media. But maybe a future console could use a card reader of some kind instead of an optical drive - if there even is another generation of consoles after this one, which is not exactly clear right now.
Probably the only real 'gaming' channels I'm subscribed to are AlphaOmegaSin, AVGN's channels and Pat's channel (not for his NES videos, they bore me). I've pretty much given up with many of them, I don't care what their opinion is on packaging - other such stupid topics for sake of clicks.
Alphaomegasin and I don't get along. I don't hate the guy but he and I just do not get along. He took a joking comment I made about him a bit too seriously when I apologized he wouldn't hear of it, where others would have laughed something like that off (I mentioned that I used to think he was a ranting Homeless man) LOVE Pat's Podcast and Ian and I get along due to our love of shmups and vinyl.
