Am I the only person who believes AVATAR is overrated?

Well, I enjoyed it. I didn't expect it to stretch me, I didn't think it was going to be profound and change my life, I also didn't expect there to be any really huge storyline that I hadn't seen previously.

So, I went for the special effects, the simple escapism and to just enjoy the banality of sci-fi. I wasn't disappointed, but hated the 3D. I am not a fan of 3D tbh and feel it is a gimmick that comes out every few years and dies off again as people quickly become bored with it.

Therefore I am clearly a very easily pleased person OR, I didn't let the hype surrounding it invade and capture my sensibilities.

If anything it was like "The Smurfs" meets "Aliens" (Hi again Segourney), meets "Star Wars" (The last or first 3 films for example) and was very much along that line. But hey, suspend believe and just soak up the graphics.

I didn't expect it to make money after I heard how big the budget was. Boy was I wrong...

When I saw the trailer, I didn't think it had mass appeal. Not anywhere near the mass appeal Cameron's previous movie Titanic.

James Cameron is doing something right though, you gotta admit that.

    Again...what brand were you using?

My Girlfriend wears eyeglasses. Xpand, although not quite the right size for a bulky pair of eyeglasses, will work as designed with eyeglasses. The other brands will NOT. You have to try them all out before you make a blanket statement. The designs are different. Its like saying a Ghostbusters on the Wii and Xbox360 are the same, despite the Wii mote being a better control for the game, but also the Xbox360 having better graphics. The are not the same, so go and figure out what works best for you. Marketers have made it difficult for the public to understand that all 3D glasses and technologies are not the same and vary in quality.

The xpand glasses have shutter sync in them and are battery opperated. I had tried them almost a decade before they became a mainstream movie theatre technology. Stuff doesn't quite pop out as much as the other technologies, but its much easier on the eyes and definately is going to be the next step for higher end movie theatre chains.

Its good that you took the time to figure out what 3D technology you were using. Now you can experiement with the other brands and eventually settle on one that works best for you.

Bloated high budget Hollywood blockbusters being overrated is pretty much a given isn't it? I wonder if people will look back on it like people do today with Starship Troopers. None of that ever surprises me. What does surprise me is something like No Country for Old Men or Slumdog Millionaire who end up being successful by simply being good films. It get's harder everyday to make a film in Hollywood that consists of any real substance.

Meh, is not D9, not by a stretch...

And seriously, what do you expect from most moviegoers? who keeps asking for more american pie sequels?

Actually theres a reason why this movie makes so much money, because people today CANT TAKE SHIT FROM REALITY! they been living in lala-land for so much time that when they go see avatar they get a depression because now there's even a bigger fantasy crap that the one they've been living in for years.

Anyways, I believe this video sums it up

D9 didn't do all that much for me to be honest, other than the cool scenes with the main guy in that kick ass suit, or the alien weapons.

I liked Avatar, but the thing that sucked was trying to just go see it. Even 3 weeks after it came out, it was sold out everywhere, and I ended up getting tickets 2 days before (I couldn't purchase them online) I actually saw it. We were there 1 hour in advance, and the line was already 50 people deep and we got seats kinda off to the side. Great story line and soundtrack though. But like every big budget film, it is the typical movie formula: The Hero or Protaganist (Jake), The Villain or Antagonist (Sky People/Colonel Miles Quaritch), Best Friend to the Hero, and love interest (Neytiri).

D9 was a great movie, but towards the end it started to worsen with all the not-too-great action scenes. I liked Avatar too, but the plot was really just Pocahontas in space, and completely predictable (you could pretty much guess what was gonna happen during the very beginning of the movie and the only surprising moment for me was when !SPOILERS! the scientist chick wasn't brought back to life). It was a lot like a Disney movie, but I like Disney movies

The message was good I guess, but heavy-handed and ultimately hypocritical, since they were selling Avatar Big Macs...nothing says "protect the environment" like "McDonald's"!

I just find it awesome that it didn't win the oscar for Best motion picture and director.

It only won some technical awards, and that's it.

I mentioned before the server migration that the movie is racist, because I noticed that all the bl00 people were played by black actors, when there were almost no black actors who are not bl00 people...

    See the evidence

    Look at the cast....

And that's probably all it deserved. I doubt that "Seven" had a chance to get a special effects Oscar, but Seven didn't need any special effects either to entertain the viewer and work as what it is.
Please elaborate why a movie such as Avatar this needs a deep and deeply moving storyline with excellent and convincingly emotional actors. Doesn't a Pocahontas&Star Wars-style action movie require rather amazing special effects and a simple but slightly emotional story? That's what it delivered, and that's how it works.

If someone here who dislikes Avatar want to call a blockbuster movie overrated, why don't you limit yourselves to the Michael Bay's of this world. James Cameron is a good one and has ever been. Don't bash him! :)

And before the server migration my response was something like this:

    yawn *racist blabla* yawnyawn

You're trying to strengthen the reason of your position by trying to proof that the making of the movie is basically based on racism? What the heck? I sure hope I'm getting this wrong and you don't talk like some sort of "politically correct film critic"...

I think he's lucky he got it out now, if it was far into the 3D age, it wouldn't have done nearly as well.
