Another new Battle of the Ports - Bionic Commando
Must of missed Bionic Commando back in the 80s never seem it! The idea of not jumping might drive me crazy though, how is it once you are used to it?
Thought so, I would be the same. It's great to see some of the old European computer ports brings back great memories, although on reflection ST and Amiga games weren't as good as my mates made out!
Thanks for the recent videos Yakumo. I do remember playing Rolling Thunder on a friends famiclone, back in the day. Didn't knew the arcade port was available for the PS1, probably because Namco Museum Encore was a japan only release. Also remember playing the MegaDrive version of Rolling Thunder 2. As for Bionic Commando, never saw the arcade around here. So yes, i mostly remember the NES version which is way different and a better game overall.
I know I'll get a lot of backlash from saying this but as far as arcade conversions go both the Amiga and ST were piss poor, especially the Amiga as it was hailed as the ultimate gaming system in the UK. The Mega Drive was so much better as a gaming system. There are good games for the ST and Amiga but at least 90%of arcade ports are poor efforts. Mostly due to crappy playability. I remember going to my friends house with my Master System a lot. He had an Amiga. We would play a lot of games but he always wanted to play the Master System. He'd say it was much more fun to play. I loved playing Xenon 2 and 3D Stunt car racer on his Amiga though. Everything else wasn't very good.
Fans of the super high quality HD 60fps downloads will be happy to know that I have added 9 more videos to the official site - http://www.segagagadomain.com/botp/botp-menu1.htm You can get all the videos much sooner (2 to 3 months sooner) by suporting the show though via Patreon. My page is here - http://www.patreon.com/bofp Thanks
Yakumo: great show with Bionic Commando And also Rolling Thunder, I am strangely enough looking forward to the Amiga *cough cough shite cough cough* "conversions/ports". Since it is actually fun seeing reality being shown from, when I was a child till now. With all those many horrible versions of some of my favourite games. But save the good ones for a mini BOTP show, where you could perhaps show, Superfrog PC vs. Amiga, and there you could also throw in Project X for both systems, and Moonstone for a good show of Amiga vs. PC, and you could also throw in Space Crusade in another mini BOTP show. Cause there Space Crusade on the Amiga is still to this day The Best version of a great game. But the C64 version is not too shabby either
I don't think so, it happens that it sold poorly along Beyond Good and Evil which was released around the same week, probably because Prince of Persia Sands of Time was released also in the same month.
Loved the last 2 videos, great work. Played both Rolling Thunder and Bionic Commando on the Spectrum as a kid.
Thanks for the comments, guys. BOTP - Cabal - Show #47 I'll be on holiday over the Christmas season so to keep everyone's Battle of the Ports hunger down I'm uploading this new show today and another this coming Saturday (20th December). The next following show probably won't be until January 10th 2015. Please think about supporting the show by becoming my patron. Info (Wikipedia) Cabal is a 1988 arcade video game originally developed by TAD Corporation and published in Japan by Taito Corporation and in North America and Europe by Fabtek. In this game, the player controls a commando, viewed from behind, trying to destroy various enemy military bases. The game was innovative for the era, and a modest success in sales.
Yakumo: I do know whether or not these are on the cards. But I think Bubble Bobble would be a good contender to feature on this show, and so would Castlevania , and to be perfectly honest. I prefer the NES version of the first game. Gameplay and music wise. I am not aware of how many systems Rainbow Islands has been ported to, but that game would probably also be a good contender for a spot on your show. Keep those great episodes coming !
Castlevania can't be done because there's only the X68000 version that's based upon the arcade game. The other two are nice choices however.
