To be honest the PC Engine's add ons do t really give the PC Engine more power. The CD drive offers only more storage Nd the Arcade Card offers only more storage space for data like the Saturn's Ram cartridge. It's still that little PC Engine doing all the work.
Another great episode Yakumo, thank you! These PCE NeoGeo ports are mighty impressive given the age of the system. From wikipedia on the arcade cards: Arcade Card Duo (PCE-AC1) – A RAM expansion card that adds the 16 Megabits of DRAM required to run Arcade CD-ROM² discs on any Super CD-ROM² and PC Engine Duo systems. Arcade Card Pro (PCE-AC2) – Combines the functions of the Arcade Card Duo and the Super System Card into one card. Designed and marketed primarily for the original CD-ROM² System. Despite the myth the Arcade Card Pro works on most systems, IFU30, Duo and SuperCDrom, even on the GT, I've tested them over the (many many) years.
Well they are still thankfully making Phoenix Wright as well But yeah, I really miss the days when we got so many different awesome franchises from Capcom. Anyway, back on topic - I've only played the arcade and PCE versions of Side Arms and honestly after watching that vid I don't really feel like I missed out on much. The only port I now want to track down is the C64 port which looks ace. It looks good enough but more over its the only computer port that looks as though it runs smoothly. Pity about the Amiga port - it looks like a really lazy ST port. Glad you mentioned about the difficulty on the BC mode (on the PC Engine special release), I mean - the PC Engine port always felt really hard to begin with compared to the arcade version, but you respawn on your current location which is for the most part useful (only it sucks when you repawn in the middle of a shit ton of enemies). Now the BC mode took away that, so it repawns you back at the beginning of the level, and boss difficulty was ramped way up with the new bosses. Honestly - only way I could complete either PC Engine mode was to use the turbo fire function on my pad and abuse a couple of the powerups, it was the only way to clear the screen of enemies in later levels.
I suspect I'm kind of late to the party, but if I may make a humble suggestion in regards to the poll question, I suggest that you have English voice over + subtitles. Having subtitles instead of a scrolling marque would be significantly less distracting. I know of many countries/cultures where subtitled movies/videos are common, but I can't think of any place which uses a scrolling marque instead of it. The only time I see scrolling marquees is when you have business news (Stock exchanges), or news updates (Warnings, amber alerts, or news tickers for breaking stories). In those cases, usually you want to distract your users so they take note of important information.
I understand your suggestion but the problem with subtitles is that they need to be timed. This is a very time consuming process. It would take me at least another 10 hours or more to time everything not to mention the extra hassle. If YouTube's auto subtitle program worked well on English accents that are not American then I could use that but the issue is that it doesnt work very well
My god this takes me back, the arcade version used to be in my local youth club, just as I was getting good they replaced it with a Raiden game! My mate then got the Atari ST version we literally run back from the shops and settled in for an afternoon f top shooting action.,.....Imagine our surprise when that turd loaded!!! C64 version looks and sounds good again, the things they could do with that machine always amazed me.
Hehe not surprised, perhaps there is a way to hack megadrive games to do what was done with Zelda III and co on SFC with the MSU1.
Finally watched the Side Arms one and went straight to Hellfire. These episodes keep getting better and better. Quite a shame Hellfire never had a MegaCD or a SuperFamicom port. Also surprised both never got ports for japanese computers.
Yeah, it quite odd they never got FM Towns or X68000 ports. Maybe it was a Toaplan thing? I wonder if many of their other game got ports?
That really got me curious as well. Checking HG101 article on Toaplan confirms they didn't seem really focused on japanese computers, mostly licensing ports for consoles. http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/toaplan/toaplan.htm
That would be my guess. Still, it's strange that a game like Truxton 2 was only ported to the FM Towns. Maybe they asked too much money to license their games?
That's also a possibility. I mean, so many lesser title made it to ports so why not Toaplan? I wonder if Sega had a hold on the 16bit ports? Could be since the PC Engine is technically an 8bit while the X68000 and FM Towns are 16bit.
