I've heard conflicting stories regarding the status of that Sonic X-Treme demo shown at the '96 E3, so was it two separate playable levels or just a video, as seen on virtually every lost levels Sonic fan site? Also, it's highly likely that the "5fps" description has been misquoted from one of the many development members who have spoken out regarding this game, and such a poor figure seems more reasonable for an earlier build. Then again, we can safely conclude that this game was never even close to being finished, instead consisting of different stage layouts using various engines.

There are only a handful of screenshots depicting the work Sega Technical Institute did with the NiGHTS engine, but that's only to be expected if we are to believe the myth that they only had access to Sonic Team's code for a few short weeks. Ironically, this seems to be the most advanced (and, in my opinion, playable) version of the game produced, as the 360-degree stage movement and processor-intensive fish-eye lens camera effect are absent. However, in the end this leaves what is essentially the Sonic mini-game from Christmas NiGHTS. Considering that this is more advanced than anything STi did with the same engine, do we really need Sonic X-Treme after all?

Another possibility is that either something from the early BUG! engine build is leaked or programmers Ofer Alon and Chris Senn finally release the fruits of their allegedly more promising later PC version. A major factor preventing either from happening is Alon's reluctance to even acknowledge this game, which isn't surprising when you look at how badly he was treated (according to Senn's own personal account, Ofer's solutions to replacing the confiscated NiGHTS engine was snubbed in favour of an inferior alternative by co-worker Chris Coffen). The visual style of X-Treme seen the most in screenshots comes from the preliminary Saturn efforts, created with the BUG! engine.

Surely there's someone out there who is both desperate enough for this game and capable of reverse-engineering BUG! in its PC form? Once this has been achieved, level artwork could be transferred from existing screenshots into the game world as textures - if this can be done with 2D recreations of "lost" Sonic 2 levels, why not for X-Treme as well? Finally, the sprites for Sonic and most of the enemies have already been leaked, so putting these into BUG! shouldn't be too much of a problem. The only thing left to do then would be to introduce the camera lens, but once again is this really necessary? Even some of the music is out there, and I'm sure we can all guess at what many of the sound effects would have been like. In fact, the only thing that's really going to be difficult to reproduce is the story, but there's enough concept artwork for some talented artist to at least come up with some static cut-scenes.

Sorry, I've gone way off my original point. If these so-called fans really want Sonic X-Treme that badly, why don't they do more than just talk about what they can already see in front of them? Reams of scanned magazines, the occasional interview with former staff and a video every five years won't make their dream happen. We've been lucky that some of the former STi group is prepared to share information and even some files with us, but nobody seems prepared to break into their homes in the hope of acquiring any backups, which means that we'll have to take the sensible approach (well, it is to me!) and try to develop our own interpretation of what Sonic X-Treme was supposed to be. Now that I think about it, earlier I said that there was most likely never a cohesive or playable version of the game, so the imagination has a bit of freedom when it comes to finishing this most wanted enigma. Sadly, if someone did end up releasing some version of X-Treme it would only end up disappointing those expecting it to look like the original did when using the BUG!/NiGHTS/??? engines... unless someone has enough time on their hands to produce 3 or more (!!) completely different versions.

I hate to keep bringing this up, but if everything in my last post is "pointless" then virtually all the facts I've collected regarding Sonic X-Treme in the last decade (well, almost) have been a complete waste of time. There are too many fan sites out there preaching unfalse gospel, so to speak, while Sega isn't exactly in a hurry to explain the reason why this title really disappeared. Perhaps a book documenting the company's failures would be a good idea after all?

Just to let you know, i was referring to theredeyes post as pointless. I'm extremely glad that there are people out there like you (and theredeye, as i believe he runs the lost levels) who spend their spare time compiling this information for public consumption. Sorry if i caused any offence.

Sorry for the misunderstanding - I was actually thinking there for a second that everything I'd ever learned about this game was a lie! Well, over the years I've been obsessed (and believe me, I really am) with all things Sega it's been something of a personal mission to collect as much information as possible about various unreleased games for the Saturn and, to a lesser extent, the Dreamcast. Of course, like most people I started off putting all the screenshots I'd collected onto a website, but hopefully one day I'll be able to do something better. Maybe I'll write that book and get some former STi members to speak out? Maybe the book will even have a cover disc with multimedia or a few playable demos on it?

P.S. TheRedEye, was there anything specifically that you disagreed with in that post? If so, please let me know - I'd love to discuss this subject more with similarly interested people...

I don't claim to have any unreleased prototypes, but in terms of magazine content it's likely that I've memorized everything worth remembering when it comes to Sonic X-Treme, Saturn Virtua Fighter 3, Biohazard 2 Prototype (AKA "Resident Evil 1.5") or any other high profile software cancellations. However, through years of talking to other similarly-minded enthusiasts I've been able to build on my own knowledge while also filtering out anything that might not be 100% correct - which rules out quite a lot of fan sites and virtually everything from the SegaBase editorials. Some of you might describe what I do as pure speculation, though it's more like panning for gold in a very muddy river, to use a perfect analogy. I have total respect for anyone prepared to find out even the smallest detail about such subjects, but from experience I have learned that not everything you read is always true. If more people came together it's possible that we could produce a clearer picture of what happened, and maybe along the way someone might even discover something playable from these lost titles...

  14. So is anyone considering another community dump or at least one to members who donate? It would really be nice to see some Saturn or PS1 unreleased releases. (Those are the only two systems I would pay for)
