Dino Crisis VGA FMV patch by japanese_cake

    Hi all,

    sometime around september I made a post somehwere here on the board asking what the actual problem is, that Dino Crisis can't display FMVs in VGA mode.
    japanese_cake stepped up, took a look at the whole thing and had this to say via our PM conversation:

    Unfortunately I didn't had the time by now to test this and I told him to create a thread with this development, as I'm pretty sure people would like something like this, as there are more games with this issue afaik. Either he didn't read my PM, is pissed at me :D or didn't want to release this publically ... I don't know, but I didn't want this to go to waste and rot in my PM box, so here it is.

    @japanese_cake: if you read this, I hope you are ok with me releasing this, if not let me now and this will go back to where it came from :p

    Anyway, I attached it so if anyone is interested in this and would like to try it, I would be thankful to get confirmation that this patch works.

    THIS IS FOR THE EU VERSION OF DINO CRISIS !!!
    IT MIGHT NOT WORK WITH US / JPN ASSETS !!!

    Does & doesn't work, first intro video works fine the second one is all garbled.

    I have to get back in contact with japanese_cake ... he probably only patched the first instance where a FMV gets mentioned in the code.

    im really happy to see this and hope it gets completed 100%... would be totally awesome...

    Are there any other games with this issue??
    Maybe we can get them fixed as well.

    BTW: This is for the EU version ... forgot to mention that, I will update the first post.

    I have always wondered about this as the resolution is akward on this game. Japanese-cake has done some truly amazing work that most others have said isn't possible. Thanks to him and you for this.

    All credit belongs to japanese_cake .... I just asked this question at the right time as it seems :D
    Everyone interested should spam him via PM, so he sees that there are people wanting this ... he didn't believe me when I said that I'm not the only one interested :D

    I tested this with the NTSC version :/ but I guess the game files are the same?
    (obviously not counting the 1st_read.bin)

    I don't know ... maybe the FMVs have different fps from region to region??
    I'd be surprised if they are cross compatible.

    Hi everyone, just a quick update as I do not have a lot of time at the moment. So Rocky5, to understand your testing, with the patched version you have at least the intro video working correctly on VGA? I remember that I was not really confident in my patches so if we have the first fmv playing correctly, it's a first good step :) I now have to patch the entire middleware stack to be sure that all fmv play the same way.

    Thank you guys for your support! I really appreciate your interest for my work and I really hope I can release that patch soon. At the same time I am currently working kind of hard, barely no time to spare on that. If you can wait a couple of weeks, I will be more responsive and be able to release more stuff.

    Btw if you can identify other games that have the same issue, I may be able to patch them too :)

    BTW: It looks like Dino Crisis is the only game with the FMV issue over VGA.

    Do we know of any other games that have this issue?
    I found a list on emuparadise which was compiled by one person ... it's amazing as is, but there might be more.

    I would love to see a patch for Last Blade 2. A friend of mine made a mod of the game where he added blood to the Dreamcast release called Bloody Blade 2: Blood of The Samurai. Should be easy to find links if you google the mods name. Anyways, I suspect it would look amazing in VGA.

    Hi there, yes still around :)

    Was quite busy, as most of us are I presume (vacation, vacation, etc.)

    If I recall correctly, playing the FMVs over VGA is not the issue. The real problem is their resolution that is two times too small: 240x320 iirc. The thing I would like to try is to patch the middleware stack to do some upscale work... I am about the release few things soon but I will look into this game right after.

    Interesting... The game initializes the video (pal/ntsc/vga) then passes the control to the fmv player when needed. Early in the code, both stacks (ninja and sofdec) are initialized to support the 3 video modes. Problem? When switching to the fmv player the sofdec video settings are "re-calculated" in a real messy way and of course the VGA case is not handled anymore! We never say it enough: when you code, keep your functions short :)

    Anyway now FMW are playing in VGA... and the patch is coming soon. (I know someone who will be happy to hear that, @iCEQB)
