This is the third discussion that I am posting. What is your favorite video game console and what is your favorite video game on that console. I don't have a favorite console but a really awesome console is the Nintendo GameCube. Some of my favorite games and franchises on the console is Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Strikers, Mario Party and Mario Kart.
I wouldn't play favorites either, since your favorite console also depends on your library. Those games you named with the Gamecube would easily earn high marks, and you can't forget Super Smash Bros. Melee.
I know there's going to be a million like me, but the Xbox. I love a lot of the games that are on it, the controller is great, it's easily hackable, it's a modder's dream, and I do not know any other console that has Crimson Skies: High road to revenge (The PC game, as great as it is, is not high road to revenge)
The XBOX is awesome, the Gamecube is awesome. But for me hands down it's the Saturn and PS3. They really mirror each other they were impossible to program for. Have an ass shit ton of fighters. They're both great shmup systems (dare I say the PS3 is a better Shump console than the 360?) The DS3 and Saturn pads are amongst my favorite controllers ever. Hell even Nights is on both (Nights is also on PS2 and 360 and ironically I have it on those two but not Saturn...yet) I'll be collecting for PS3 and Saturn for years to come.
As far as shmups go, comparing PS3 to Saturn is just insulting because of how much better the Saturn is. 360 and PS3...both mostly have bullet hell trash, but Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga give the win to 360 - no PS3 shmup is even close to being a hundredth as good as those two.
I can only imagine he meant to type PS2 as the PS3 is a truly terrible system for shmups. If anything it's one of the worst and has no where near the library or variety the 360 has.
My favorites are Sega Saturn (Japanese), Playstation 1 & 3, Super Famicom (for its awesome exclusives like the Jrpgs & Adventure texts believe it or not), Nec PC-9801, FM Towns, and MS-DOS
Not sure I can choose one as favorite especially since I only owned/played 5 consoles... but I love the PS1 and PS2 for oh so many reasons, so I'll go with these.
You are sorely mistaken if you think the PS3 is inferior for shmups. All one needs is a Japanese PSN account and it make the 360 it's bitch. All the 360 has is Cave shmups and yes I own them all. But all you need is ketsui and that's on the PS3. Your milage my vary depending on what country you live in. There are some games that are PS3 exclusive in one country but are on 360 in another. Still you can't play Star Soldier, Super Star Soldier, Blazing lazers or Winds of thunder on a 360. Toss around fanboy all you want it's the truth. Being able to play PS1 games and some of the best PC Engine shooters pushes the PS3 well past the Bullet Weeaboo bait machine the 360 is.
Sorry mate but the 360 owns the PS3 when it comes to shooters. At least 30 have been released on disc. Not only Cave but other companies too such as Triangle Services for one. Honestly, even if only counting the disc releases (no arcade stuff) the 360 still has a better selection. Think of it as the Saturn to the original PlayStation. It's not right including emulated titles from the PC Engine and PlayStation 1 as they are not PS3 games at all. When it comes to actual games made for the system the 360 far outweighs the PS3. When it comes to playing shooters from other systems then the PS3 easily outweighs the 360. For me the top system has to be the Sega Saturn (Japanese version) followed closely by the Super Famicom.
If we're not counting PC Engine games or PS1 games, then Ikaruga and Radient Silvergun should be removed from discussion too. I don't really like RS anyway. Ikaruga I'll give you though. Don't get me wrong I'm about 4 games short from a complete 360 Shmup set that's playable on an NTSC U system. BUT I think the PS3 is being grossly underestimated as a Shmup system. And Even compared to the Saturn the PS1 went toe to toe with the Saturn on the Shmup end too. I'm not saying the PS1 beats the Saturn, but they shared more games than anyone really remembers. Some better on Saturn, some better on PS1. Better on PS1 was a rare occurrence but it did happen. I ALMOST made a thread to debate this but for whatever reason didn't.
Sega Genesis slightly in the lead but almost neck-and-neck with SNES. Dreamcast and N64 fight it out for 3rd place. Xbox was unfortunately disqualified for taking performance-enhancing steroids.
