The Master Race is dependent on highly-customized PCs. Xbox is a highly-customized PC. Therefore, the Master Race is dependent on Xbox.
It's kinda difficult to pick one favorite, since I'm split on one main area. In terms of quantity of fantastic titles, I look no further than the SNES, especially as I'm getting more into JRPGs. In terms of greatest quality for me, however, I gotta go with the Gamecube. In addition to SSB Melee, which friends and I still play frequently to this day, I've put in ridiculous time into the likes of Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Mario Kart Double Dash, F-Zero GX, Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2, Timesplitters, Paper Mario 2, Metroid Prime, Soul Calibur 2, and the Pikmin titles. Plus, that controller. Hnnggggh. ...Plus, if I have to be completely honest, the GCN has a ton of nostalgia value for me. The N64 was my first gaming experience and it was already amazing for me, but seeing the massive leaps in graphics and gameplay in the early GCN days (not to mention having a control stick that didn't break with a slight breeze), especially via early QuickTime footage and Nintendo Power, absolutely blew my goddamned mind when I was a kid. I had no idea that games could look and play this amazingly.
Doesn't look like that will continue. Ah well. The entirety of Siliconera wants my head for even bringing it up.
Another "favorites" thread, eh? Alright, I guess I'll participate. So, it's really hard to choose just one console, because there are so many great games for many different consoles. However my top 3 would probably be: Dreamcast, Genesis, and Nintendo 64. The Dreamcast has Shenmue, DOA2, Soul Caliber, Crazy Taxi, a ton of direct arcade (Naomi) ports, and more. It also has amazing picture quality. The Genesis was my first console, and some of my favorite games are on that system - such as Earthworm Jim 2 and Vectorman. It also had really good RGB video quality (composite was a different story). The N64 was the most powerful console of its time, and the first "true" 3D home console system - that is, it was the first console with hardware designed specifically for 3D graphics. It had a small library, but it had a handful of really good games. If we're including arcade systems, I would also add the MVS and the Sega Model 3; two systems that were ahead of their time, and well beyond the capabilities of the console hardware of the time. Both the MVS and the Model 3 had some great software as well. If we were doing a "top 10" I would have more to say, but I'll stop there.
Probably Xbox, then N64, then Dreamcast. Xbox was IMO the best console of that generation in terms of function. The N64 because of Super Mario 64, my favorite game of all time. Dreamcast because of the range and quirkiness of games and the VGA output.
Can the people saying N64 justify it for me? right now my collecting is pushing me towards more N64 and Gamecube stuff and There's GOOD stuff on the N64 but nothing that would make me put it in a favorites list above the Saturn, Dreamcast, even the Gamecube. Is it just sentimental? Is it playing late night multiplayer with friends? Make a case for the N64 for me. I don't hate my N64. But it's just that system with the annoying controller that I play Mario Kart and Sin and Punishment on to me.
Absolutely. That game was amazing. Then you have Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, 007 GoldenEye, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Extreme G 1&2, KI Gold, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, 1080, etc. I feel like every genre had a must have game. It could be nostalgia, but the N64 was very reliable when it came it solid games. Others will probably be able to give better reasons than I.
I'm looking for stuff to play on it. Mine just gathers dust with Mario Kart 64 in it at all times. I really need to give it more love. Even owning one I just don't get the Allure of it. It lacks the magic the NES and SNES had.
I would add to that: Star Fox 64, Wave Race 64, Yoshi's Story, Zelda: OoT, and some of the Midway racers, and others. The N64 didn't have a huge library, but I think it had a very high good-to-shitty game ratio. That, and there are a handful of games that are so good that they justify buying the system by themselves. The N64 also had 3D capabilities beyond what the Playstation or Saturn could do. It's main limitation was its use of cartridges as a storage medium. Even still, it's a great system.
Ah but you forget the 3DO and the complete classic Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, or the variety of porn games that ISO Zone tells me are on it. Seriously, if I had to take one system and game on a deserted island, it would be my Genesis, with Sonic 2. Best controller, best look (Model 1 goes with one of those old hi-fi systems, and the Model 2 goes with anything else), and dare I say it, better games than the SNES.
The SNES VS Genesis debate will go on until Christ himself returns.... with the system God Chose as the winner of the 16 bit wars and since God likes to troll us, Jesus will return with a PC Engine.
I like that you mention that, because the SNES vs. Genesis seems even more heated when it's discussed amongst old timers rather then when a giant group of gamers is in the time period that it's popular. Ha, but i love both, & all systems in reality. If I had to grind it down to where I'd want to, it'd be 16 bit hands down, with systems like GBA & DS following since they kind-of emulate the old time feel of games to me. & i like that because you mention the PC Engine. You didn't say it, but the Saturn seems to be another obscure fan favorite, that I hope to experience them with the best titles before I die.
*finds thread and jumps in* If I had to choose, Id either say PS1 or PS2 for home consoles, for handhelds probably the NDS (although the PSP is rivaling a tiny bit). The PS1 has most of my favourite games (Spyro 3, NFS4, wipeout 2097, MGS and more) and is always my choice, if I want to play with friends (Crash Bash and CTR are the best time-wasters that I got). The PS2 has its own awesome share of games (MGS 2 and 3, Zone of the Enders, Battlefront, Kingdom Hearts 1, 2 and Re:CoM and lots more), but loses out on the PS1s nostalgia factor (I grew up with it, so no chance there ._.) As for handhelds... welp, my DS has the most time played right after my PS1 and 2 and has some good multiplayer titles (and Pokemon of course!) and the PSP got some interesting exclusives. Im also slowly starting to look for more stuff that I may want to play, but I doubt that that might change something regarding the above ranking
Banjo-Kazooie has NOT aged well and is a total chore to play today. In fact, the same applies to all of Rare's N64 platformers.
