Whenever I hear about Sony doing something stupid a smile appears on my face. :) As Madhatter says, Sony doesn't really give a damn about the gaming industry. They just see it as a means to an end. Anyone who supports Sony and it's god-awful dystopic vision of multimedia 0wn4g3 is a dumb-ass. The PS3 is gonna be sooooooooo god!1

Not only is the price high, but the BluRay technology is still relatively new and untested. I recall reading about some of the early HD-DVD players having all sorts of flaky problems...I can't imagine BluRay being all that reliable at the start either.

    Long live to my PS2.

A Xbox 360 Premium down here costs 2.400 Reais ( more than 1.000 dollars, thanks to no official support).

The PS3 will probably be sold for 3.500 Reais (again no official support)

Maybe i'll buy one in the year 2010. Or maybe if i get promoted and my salary goes sky high.

Sony people are -> :smashed: :smashed:

the good thing is, when you do buy a PlayStation 3, you're not just buying one console, but 3 put together in one: you're buying an original PlayStation + PlayStation 2 + the new PlayStation 3 put together in one box.

Add to that the addition of a Blu Ray player and DVD player, possibly many more features to come. PS3 will probably be the only system you need. And forget about Nintendo Wii; you'll have a similar technology called "Six Degrees" which is guided by sensors integrated in the controller based on six axes.

quite an amazing system, and for a low price too. I'm dreaming about my black 60GB PS3 SKU right now... only a few more months

    buy ps3

Its no where near as good and will be useless within actual games. Much rather them had spent the cash kitting out all the consoles with HDMI. PS3 will be the only system i think ill be able to not buy.

Getting a Wii just for the fun ill have with my family.

Now remove your face from sonys ass.

So hold on, does that mean that if I buy an Xbox and put MAME on it, I'm buying 3000+ arcade machines?

By the sounds of it you already have the previous two anyway.

What about all the games on the other systems I want to play? I don't understand your logic.

I think the interesting thing about Sony's six degree control is not what it means for Sony's console. It really just takes the edge of Wii, it makes Wii's most crucial card less exclusive and makes it a mundane add-on feature on Sony's console.

Now of course the Sony Six degree's sounds considerably less accomplished than the Wii's but I think it may tempt people who only buy one console to side with the PS3 - as it has it all (apparently).

As for concura's point about backwards compatability, I do think that is one of the best features the PS3 has to offer. I remember in the months after the PS2's Japanese launch I mainly sat around playing Psone games when there was nothing new coming along. It certainly takes the edge of a launch. Also as Sony seems very keen to support the PS2 long into its twilight years, I think it will be quite a smooth transition from PS2 to 3.

    Spot on. It's stealing thunder.

I wasn't knocking backwards compatibility so much as the justification that the PS3 is worth the amount it is because it has old hardware in it. I guess I see backwards compatibility is an added extra, not a reason for buying a console.

Does anyone know whether it's actual PS2/PSX hardware on chip, or whether it's via emulation? Seem to remember seeing something indicating they were trying out the latter...

Nice one, Sony! How the fuck are teens going to spend $600-700? I know that I won't do it, for that matter: $300 is about my maximum for any console, seeing as I have more than gaming to spend my money on(Anime and Manga being the real money eaters), and being 16 and without a job my financial capabilities aren't exactly woehoe either. I'll just get a Wii, and a PS3 in about 1-2 years...

So was Nintendo in the 80's and look what happened to them after the Super Famicom ! Sony is going bye bye ! People don't want an all in one media box ! People don't like everything being controlled by one system. What happens if it dies and being a Sony it WILL. If it dies you loose everything ! Your internet, Email, DVD player and games system. The Revolution (can't bring myself to call it a wii) is looking more promising day by day.

The problem with that argument comes straight back to the price - Even if the 360 doesn't get a price drop (so still core $300 premium $400), and the wii does launch at $250 as is being thrown around, you can STILL buy a 360 core+wii for only slightly more than the basic ps3
In the more likely scenario of something the 360 being $350 or even $300 for the premium by november (it's a year from the 360s original relase remember) then then its an even better deal. I know what I'd go for.

The PS3 is going to have to have one hell of a lot of great launch titles, else It'll be a flop when launching

I really want to believe you're being sarcastic but there are too many fanboys who would really say something like that. I'll just assume you're a fanboy.

3 systems in one, eh steve? Impressive... For the late 90s. The Wii gives you 7 biult in systems (NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Wii, Genesis, and TurboGrafix). That's more then twice what the PS3 gives you. Not to mention that those systems combined have a far larger pool of games from which to play.

As for the "Six Degrees" system... It didn't look all that good. It has fewer abilities then the Wii-mote and pretty much everyone, even Microsoft, can tell that it's a cheap ploy at copying the Wii. I don't think "Six Degrees" will be stealing any thunder.

You said it, this nearly parallels the 3DO. I don't care how cool it is, $600 is just out of the question. That's more than I make in a week! That's half my rent! They're out of thier minds.

No software emulation. The way it works is that this time you tape a PS2 ontop of the PS3 to enable backward compatability.

Most likely its on chip or they will probably do it the same way MS did where they have to release patches to let it play on the new hardware. Migrating the PS2 chips to the PS3 board would be a waste of money and silicone for sony and make the console very big... no wait it already is. Seriously, this isn't a console, just a bluray player with added features.
