Erm.. im not sure .. did I ever buy a console new or always 2nd hand?
Anyway.. from the release on I guess I will have to wait 12-18months - hoping the price will drop to a level Im willing to spend.
btw... will I buy one, not having a high res. plasma, LCD yet?
No matter what how awesome the graphics are.. with a few hundred PAL lines only theres no way to expect a big jump I guess...

I honestly feel the ONLY reason that this console is so high in price is because of the Blue Ray Disc technology.

The 1st games that are released will probably be on regular DVDs and eventually, as times goes on; they will be on BR Discs. Those will probably be more expensive.

If I am wrong and all the releases are on BR Discs, then I expect them to be $7-80 a pop. It's a new technology. Especially for the US (not sure in Japan).

If I could afford this machine, I'd buy it. Yet, it isn't going to happen. EVER.

I am fine buying the cheapest next gen system on the market. Yeah, it may not have amazing online capabilities, media what nots, and these flashy what cha call it's, but it plays games. THAT'S WHAT I WANT! I could care less about this "all in one" nonsense.

Look at all the old consoles. THEY JUST PLAYED GAMES! Atari, NES, SNES, GENESIS, etc...

I get all ticked when I hear people bitching (sorry) that they can't play the whole library of previous gen games on their new system. THAT'S WHY YOU KEEP YOUR OLD SYSTEM! IT PLAYS THOSE GAMES FINE! Backwards compatibility isn't a big deal IMO.

A system should just have to concentrate on itself and not worry about emulating its older brother.

I may not have all the extensive knowledge of current gaming, but I am just voicing my opinion on what I've read and seen. Sorry if my post seems ignorant.

I knew that later.

If MS really does that, i'll so buy a Xbox360. Lower price + guarantee + official support = winner

PS2 is a good value for folks who have high-end LCD or Plasma TV and want to watch movies in hidef.

I don't have HD TV at the moment, but plan to get one as soon as I can afford it, after I buy my condo. Once I have my 40" LCD HDTV, I will so totally ponny up whatever is the cost of HDMI PS3. I'll even buy several games. Any Castlevania, Kill Zone and Arc The Lad games.

Also, PNP or HUB or whatever is the Sony's answer to Xbox Live sounds like a great value. It's free version has as much functionality as Platinum XBL membership.

I buy my video game systems for one thing and one thing only and that is gaming. All-in-one machines be damned, I just can't afford it. Among school, gas, insurance, etc, there is no room for games! The next generation isn't even an option for me.

The PS3 is a far cry from the only machine I'll ever need. In fact, "it's the VERY last one in a VERY long line", to quote Foo Fighters, DOA.

Following the thread leaves me no choice...
WHY do you make me read your stupid quarrels?!
I guess a PM or Email slugfest is not satisfactory without the general public knowing about it.

I got a 22inch Elsa monitor.. still too small for my playing games etc.
BUT: I forgot to mention I got a solution here, though its not cennected yet.
A professional Videomonitor from Ebay. 29inch NEC 1280x1024 res. max.
Feels funny, having to destroy my own argument - :banghead:

STILL: I will not buy a PS3 for 600Euro !

Some was mentioned before...
I think Sony will make enough profit, even with less sold units!
People are investing more and more money in their home theatre.
(this chamber where more & more free time is spent)
I imagine a young couple, both working hard, wannabee trendy, spending money on lifestyle, status and "hip" products.
And next to the ~45inch LCD/plasma and surround-system fits the PS3.
*of course none of this stuff is something I would call high quality!
Its expensive, yet its all reduced to costs and mass-produced!
Is there really something about the workmanship, materials, components that is not a big victim to costs? Features is all you get!
How many recalls will the PS3 have? Whats Sony calculation on the lifetime&warranty compared to defects?
[rant] *skip?
The first PSX series is sold here for good money because nerds found out it makes a pretty good Hi-Fi CD-Player. By all I read they are also pretty much indestructible. Lateron we got a plastisized CD-drive, no cinch-outs etc... and the complaints about dying units went up.
PSone? Cool! But if I hold it in (my rather huge) hands, it makes squeaky noises.
PS2? I have seen so many dead lasers (on unmodified units), heard complaints about the tray.
Now a PS3 with a 1st gen. blue-ray drive. I say its doomed!
Why should the company care if its the games that attract the customers.. and if a unit dies and baby-customer is angry? Well warranty helps or he will buy a new one - instead of letting all the expensive games rot at home.
Sony has many high quality products & periphals - the weak spots are the holes where you can see how the make more money out of the deal.
[/rant]

Maybe you shouldnt be so harsh on Sonys concept of a multi-purpose device.
The main thing is still gaming. The powerful Cell-cpu makes more things possible.. I dont think its the added features that drive up the (material) price.
What Sony charges for it is something different.
We saw PS2 games on 2 DVDs.. so why not the next gen. medium in the next gen. console? - and make it a BD-player instead of a PS2-DVD-player.
Since the DC internet & consoles more or less go together - why not also with the PS3? (at least the PS3 specs say it should be less of a compromise then the 3DO was)
The domination of the living room is a big aim of many companies. HTPCs, HDD-recievers etc.... and now the PS3.
*pff* I say "long live the components" :katamari:

$600 could be a careful ploy on sony's part.

They could be breaking even on the unit and using it to their advantage.

Nintendo doesn't lose money on system, so perhaps sony has caught on.

Recoup the costs from the "any price" early adopters, then cut the price
for the people with less money.

It would theoretically save them 1-1.5 billion dollars.

I find talk of the PS3 being overpriced quite funny. Sony have never been cheap. 600 USD is 321 UKP. Back in 1995 the Playstation launched for 299 UKP.

Due to inflation in the last ten years it actually works out cheaper, although whether we'll be lucky enough to get a price based on the exchange rate remains to be seen. Often USD is crossed out and replaced with UKP, which would mean it's double the price of the original grey box.

Actually, a while back sony announced that PS3 games would only be releasedon Bluray in an attempt to thwart piracy, but this could have changed.

And yes, Bluray cost considerablly more than DVD's to produce at this time, since unlike HD-DVD, Bluray requires a full retooling of DVD plants.

If I remember correctly SONY does not intend to drop the price of the units along the way, due to the actual cost of the units themselves. Be it as it may, the cost of an early console, the PSX (PS1) had insides that were much cheaper to produce a short time after launch, whereas the stuff found in the Ps3 is the kind of internals that will stay high, mostly because they're only found in PS3 (for now). All the peripherals and the relatively new BluRay technology (CD and DVD had been around since forever before the launch of PS1 and PS2) just add further to the price. If the PSP is any indication that it's an expensive handheld that does it all, the PS3 is an expensive home console that does it all - but although some parents will consider 250US$ for a PSP, 600 is just asking for trouble. I know my parents would laugh hard if I asked them for 600 to get a game console, because truly, they can't give a rat's ass about HiDef video etc when they're perfectly satisfied with DVDs.

i just saw the australian pricing - $829 for the tard pack and $999 for the normal version. for comparison, the x360 is $499/$649 (altho they were slightly cheaper on launch day)..

at that price, i dont see myself getting one unless it falls off the back of a truck..
