Do an apples:apples comparison - PSX launched for $299. PS3 is launching for $599. That's a 100% increase in price in the US no matter which way you look at it. Comparing British exchange rates with US prices is misleading.
Australia needs to change to ntsc so they can import from japan without being shafted all the time...
YEah but then its playing games you cant understand all the time. Im sure their pal tvs like the uk can handle ntsc signals.
yeahyuh! and now, the moment you've been waiting for... -PlayStation 3, $499 20GB SKU package: frickin' sexy!! and... -PlayStation 3, $599 60GB SKU package: hott!!!! this is love  (notice the difference, 60GB version has silver trim and 20GB is all black). mine. all mine. no touchy *Concura
i just bought a 360 off ebay, going to get a wii and im probably going to get 2 years until mgs4 is greatest hits and ps3 is 300bucks.
Mmm... I couldn't really vote. I could easily afford one... but... I'm not going to buy one... because there are soooooo many better things out there to buy... like... a Neo-Geo game.
Discount? If we have to keep reading all this propaganda, i think we can demand to have some units for free.
I think i am going to get one now just based off the gui i saw and the fact that it had some kewl movie running during the demo. PLUS it can support up to 8 web pages running off a in house browser. (man sony can code) Plus it plays atrac and mp3's. You'd think i would stop there but i can't it can view photos. Think about it photo in slide show with a basic edit function like rotate and flip. (i think that was put in by the house too) It also does voice video and text chat (example of the chatting {Golly i am R0x4r L33t on []D3 wanna play some madden 07 true gammer 4 life}). But one day when the ps4 comes out it will have a gaming function if you upgrade.... Wii60 4 life bizatches
Sorry, but IMO that's not an attractive console at all. It looks like a section of wing or something. And the "chrome" trim on the $599 unit is preposterous looking. What's next, chrome spinner rims on the side and some little flame stickers? The PS2 was a sexy looking console, IMO, this thing is just gay, especially that "Spiderman" font they write the system name in. I mean....I'll buy one eventually, I'll have to, but I'll stash it underneath a shelf or something where my other consoles won't be offended by it's presence.
It's probably to attract the "gangsta" boys. You know, the same people that put 20' Chrome wheels on a honda civic. Bling Bling! Pimp my PlayStation!
I have been thinking about the cheaper 499 PS3 and it does not seem so bad to me IMHO No HDMI - not a problem, I can still get HD or VGA + I don't have a HD TV and when I do it will not be top of the range so not a problem. No SD/misc ports - Big Deal! It has 4 USB ports, if you have an SD card or duo you probably have an adapter or two. 20 GB HDD - As long as it stores all my saves, game data and profiles I don't care! I am not going to fill the HD with stupid expensive content. Problem - lack of Wifi. I will have to hook my PSP vid USB, kinda annoying. Seriously the biggest issue for me is the lack of the foxy silver trim!
It's not so much that it doesn't have these features, it's the fact that the only way to upgrade to those features later is to buy a brand new console. Say you slip on some water in a grocery store and decide to buy a nice new HDTV with the lawsuit settlement. The only way to get HDMI would be with a second, more expensive PS3.
1/ AFAIK it's not known yet whether no HDMI means no hi-def content at all (hard to see what the downside would be if they put a VGA port in instead; it'd be better if anything). 2/ I doubt Sony would let an SD adapter work instead of the internal one, again that doesn't make business sense. Agreed on 3/ though, 20gb should be enough.
Old Phil Harrison said that the 20GB PS3 would support HD even up to 1080p. http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=55089 HDMI just makes certain connecting certain TVs easier I guess. I suppose it might be an issue, but it does not bother me now, maybe 6 years down the line... Well if the worst comes to the worst I can always use my Duo stick through my PSP to get stuff on to my PS3. Though I doubt Sony are going to be that restrictive on how you can hook up your PS3 to other media. At the moment (I may change!) I see no problems with the basic 20 GB package at all. It is not ideal, but will do for gaming.
Fair enough, that's certianly what he says. So that means when you buy a PS3, you buy a machine that will turn HDCP-protected content into analogue high def? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of HDCP, that Sony have signed up to? I have a hard time believing the Digital Content Protection consortium would be happy about it, being the ones who licensed it out to Sony for inclusion in blu-ray in the first place. I'm pretty sure it'd be a breach of contract if nothing else.
He never mentioned anything about the low end PS3 outputting 1080p HDCP content, just 1080p content. In other words, if the media (games/movies) are in 1080p and do not use HDCP, then it will play fine over analog. However, anything "protected" will be dropped down to 540p (if I remember correctly) for analog connections. Basically, what is going to happen is all the first generation BD movies and games will be unprotected to get people to buy the low end PS3. After a while (i.e. once the sales drop to a certain level), the BD content will start shifting to HDCP and force anyone who wants the newer content at the highest output to purchase a nice new HDCP(HDMI) enabled machine. Its a delayed bend-you-over policy.
He certainly implied it. When someone says "both machines will play blu-ray movies in HD" I tend to assume they mean the machine will play any blu-ray movie in HD. Anyway, no doubt you're right. Bloody ripoff merchants. Hopefully by the time they start introducing HDCP it'll have been broken and we won't have to put up with their crap.
