There should be a filter, but only if all the bad words are changed to "drokk".

It IS an expression that got its roots in homophobia; but the vast majority of people using it nowadays probably don't even think about homosexuality when they say it.

I'm not saying it's a correct expression that people should use, just that when a 10 yo kid says his Christmas gifts were "gay" you can't automatically call it homophobic, or heterosexist as we should more accurately say. Though associating "negativity" with the same word as a sexual orientation is insidiously perpetrating the idea that it's a "bad" one. Hence why this expression should disappear from common language.

Me too. Even better if whenever a post gets edited out it gets replaced with

    I AM THE LAW

I vote for 'smurf'. You wouldn't even need a list of bad words (which gets old really fast) - just take a whitelist and replace everything else.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but off-topic discussions that goes into something debate oriented is part of the reason why I love this forum, lol. You guys make me giggle at times..

Anyways, I for one am against anything "homophobic" and against filtering of content just because a few kids may decide to pop onto a forum with a dominant "mature" userbase.

I used to be on a forum where all the words in the filter (well the common ones) were changed to other similar words. For example, many people were told to go "hug" themselves. :D

Couldn't we just ban the children on here? All they seem to offer is a lot of grief because they can't get stuff and drive away people who are interested in just knowing about the things that exist.

You guys could do like the Something Awful forums: have a filter on only for unregistered users, when the user logs in the filter is deactivated.

Or is there not another option where we can just choose to have a filter in our account preferences? Have it enabled by default.

Would you do us all a favor and go watch the South Park episode "The F Word".
    http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s13e12-the-f-word

    K thx.

As for silverfox, here are some more suitable forums for you to peruse during family time:
    christian-gaming.com
    christiangamingcommunity.com
    www.christiangamers.net

I'm sure their language will be much more to your liking.

Hmm, lots of very valid points here...

    • Yes, the forum has always been pretty well-behaved and polite, certainly in comparison to other gaming forums.
    • I would largely attribute that to our users being more mature - that doesn't necessarily mean in age, but we're not a bunch of immature idiots who are so used to insulting each other whilst online gaming that we have no sense of reality or socially acceptable behaviour.
    • A swearing filter is possible, but yeah they can be annoying.
    • Yes, you could ask people to just watch their language. THIS IS A PERFECTLY REASONABLE REQUEST. You would do so in public - there's no way you would swear at a child (or anyone, hopefully) at work, so why should this forum be any different? Have respect for your fellow human beings. That said, there's nothing wrong with the occasional swear word when justifiable.
    • You could easily put a clause in the sign-up agreement stating something like "You must be aged 18 or over to join this forum. By signing up, you are confirming that you are aged 18 or over.
    • Making the forum 18+ is probably a bit extreme. How about a revision of the above, more along the lines of "Whilst we request that users keep content acceptable to all viewers regardless of age, there may be some adult content on the forum. By signing up, you agree that you are aged 18 or over and not offended by profane language, or you have the permission of a parent or guardian to sign up."

In summary, we're a pretty polite bunch with respect for others on this forum, you really should try to moderate your language on a forum just as you would at work or in public and I feel the best solution would be a sign-up disclaimer stating that there may be bad language on the forum and you or a parent are agreeable.
