Just wondering, for people who collect what they would consider rare. Is there any item or items that looking back, you never thought you would own (be it rare or expensive) but now you have it?

For me it would have to be all of my arcade games, I never thought I would own real arcade hardware that I could play in my house and every time I think about it, I get a sense of joy.

An Xbox, honestly never saw myself getting one... and now I collect and research it.

While collecting Xbox items I didn't think I'd own a kiosk unit.

I wasn't putting many hopes of owning an beta game and Dev hardware until last year, the first one was an Xbox Debug Kit, then an NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 Alpha Disc and today, an Wii RVT-R.

Like Pato, I also didn't think that I could get beta games or dev hardware, but now, I am proud of some unreleased games and dev hardware (Wii RVTs, IS-Nitro, GBOX) that I have.

I never thought I would get a big block JTAG Jasper with a manufacture date of 09 06 2009. I think that's the last month JTAGABLE Jaspers were even produced. Oh and it's flashed to LT 3.0, so It's the ultimate console for me

As a young Rare fan in 2003 I looked longingly at the Xbox almost solely for Grabbed by the Ghoulies. Money's hard to come by as a kid, and I had already saved up for and gotten a GameCube - there was no feasible way I was going to get a few hundred bucks more for basically a single game. Never thought I'd get the system in 2013 for $15 at a thrift store... finally played through Ghoulies last year and absolutely loved it!

Edit - ah, didn't see this is for rare stuff (and no pun intended, honest!). I do have an NPDP-GDEV, and I'm pretty sure the me saving up for a normal GameCube wouldn't have guessed that!

A Pikachu N64. I wanted one when I saw they'd come out, but I thought I'd never afford one, lo and behold I found it for $10.

I was a huge fan of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrows when I was in school and I always wanted to try out the very first game on NES, sadly copies of those are.... pricey. Then I walk into my favourite (now sadly gone) independent games store and the owner smiles at me and offers me a stack of boxed, pristine condition NES games at £10 a piece. I was broke at the time but my buddy wasn't, so I left with a copy of Castlevania that day and I'll always treasure it.

A Pokémon mini unit (surprisingly, I found a sealed unit on my city for about $10)...

I didn't think I would ever own a Wondermega, but I have one of those now. Same goes for my Virtua Fighter 3 arcade board.

Not rare but ugly: an Xbox 360 E

It was so cheap, like 600 reais, that's something near 220 USD. (normal price is 800 reais, that's 300 USD)

I don't even know why I bought it. It's so weird near the other Xboxes. I think I'll give it to someone. Microsoft design people after the phone/win8 crap should be fired.

Virtual Boy. Those ones are pretty hard to find at the flea market. Luckily, back in high school, one of the teachers were giving one of their old video games to the special ed kids. I looked inside one of the boxes and found that system! I asked one of the teachers if I can have it and he said yes. Went home to test it out with some games and it actually worked after sitting in the storage for several years.

Finally, another fan of Grabbed by the Ghoulies! I can't say I've found another that really gave the game a fair shot, let along enjoyed it. I got it free from work, ended up loving it enough to get a tattoo of a Ninja Imp nearly 8 years later.

As for my own item, I've owned a lot of gaming or game related things over the years, but the clutch item for me was a TEST PS2. I first saw them in person during a visit to the Majesco office in NJ around the PC release of BloodRayne and have have wanted one ever since. I finally got one from eBay a few years back and couldn't be happier with it. It's not the rarest thing out there, or as special as it used to be, but it makes me happy to achieve that goal.

Never saw myself get an Xbone. Was interested in getting a PS4 but saw they were sold out everywhere. I said, "Fuck this," and got myself an xbone around christmas weekend or so 2013. I wouldn't get that PS4 till march 2014. The power supply was DOA so i went to the MS store and got it replaced. No other problems otherwise.
