I never thought I would ever own Commander Keen in a physical form or Gunstar Heroes for the Genesis. Lucked out on the former when someone was selling a sealed copy of Goodbye Galaxy in 2013 on Amazon for about fifteen bucks, the latter I payed a pretty penny on but I got my sixty dollars worth out of it for sure.

I never thought I would own a Dreamcast Dev. Box 5.24 but I saw a listing on ebay about a year ago and I couldn't resist getting it.
I got it fully functional recently and posted a video of it on youtube:

Honestly I never thought I would end up collecting any video game stuff. Most of the stuff I own isn't incredible rare except for one of my Gamecubes. It is actually the reason I was referred to this site. "Thanks for your outstanding support on flipper" cube, nothing really special about it besides it saying that on the jewel cover, and I only know of a couple of them. Still looking for more info on it.

I never thought that I would actually be able to get into collecting prototypes, but today, I own 10 gameboy prototypes, as well as 4 snes prototype boards.

Yes- a GAME BOY! When I was a wee lad I begged my parents for one. Borrowed a classmates for a whole week and it was ON.

But no, "we have a PC, what do you need one for?", "it's a waste of money!" etc. I actually cut out a picture of one in the Argos catalogue and used to carry it around with me......the shame.

They eventually relented and I got a GB Pocket including SMB1 + 2. I'm still collecting Game Boy stuff to this day- along with Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, GP32, Neo Geo X, DS PSP etc.

    I think I may have a complex...

I think it would have to be my Dreamcast SD adapter and SNES USB flashcart. I used to dream of having "every game ever made" ready for immediate load.

Aside from that: DC Keyboard, mouse, a pair of fishing controllers and the maracas[sic?].

My favorite find I still own (and use) is a Pro Fighter X SNES copier. I recently acquired an older Toshiba Libretto and set it up with the LPT loader on the Pro Fighter. Memories...

This is a long post since the item has a story attached to it.

I have a several things I never thought I would own but if I had to say the one I'm the most proud of, then it would have to be my Sega CD Model 1.

For a few years I wanted a Sega CD Model 1 as it would look better with my Sega Genesis Model 1, fit on the shelf better, and had a cooler BIOS screen than the Model 2 (IMO), but I never could afford the ridiculous prices on eBay.

I was on eBay back in January and I decided to bid in auctions for the first time. For giggles, I looked up the Sega CD Model 1 on eBay and saw them going for $150-$400, usually paired with a Sega Genesis Model 1 and a bunch of games. I saw Model 2s going for $50-$100 so I decided that I never would be able to own a Model 1 and put a bunch of Model 2s in my watch list.

Just when I had given up hope and was about to get a Model 2, I stumbled upon a nice looking untested Sega CD Model 1 that lacked a power supply but came with the metal heat sink plate and mounting screw, all for a USD$42 starting bid. Seeing I previously bought an untested SNES that worked fine, I checked the bank and had enough money to go for a while so I put my very first auction bid on it. Up until the closing day of the auction I was the only bidder. On closing day, someone decided to out bid me. We went all the way up to $62 where the other bidder stopped bidding and I was the highest bidder. I won the auction and was extremely happy!

It arrived a few days later on a Saturday and I was like a kid on Christmas day... until I realized that the only Genesis Model 1 PSU I had was my official one that was powering the Genny. I started searching online for an official PSU when I found one on eBay. I was about to buy it when I remembered I had a bunch of power supplies in my boxes of misc. computer parts.

I looked online for info on what the Sega CD accepts. I came across an article talking about the different Sega PSUs for various Sega consoles and saw that the 9V 1A power supply of the USA Master System works on a Genesis Model 1. So I went through my PC parts and found an AC adapter that outputted 9V 1000mA center pin positive and fit into the Genny. I had my Dad reverse the polarity and then I plugged it into my Genny. It worked! I then plugged my official Sega PSU into the Sega CD and turned on the power. It was dead. The Sega CD I bought was dead.

After hearing so much about the reliability of the Sega CD, I knew instantly what was wrong: the fuse was dead. Following a guide I found online, I went to RadioShack and bought an automotive fuse holder and a pack of 4 fuses that work with the Sega CD and the fuse holder. With some more soldering help from my Dad, we got the new fuse holder and fuse installed. I hooked it back up and the system turned on! It's alive, ALIVE!!!

I pressed my partially broken reset button (need to pull forward press it down while holding it forward for it to work), and the tray didn't eject. I even tried the eject button in the BIOS's CD Player. Once again, I instantly knew that the belt was bad. So I bought a new belt and installed it. It works perfectly now but the green "READY" LED is dead and the ML2032 battery is dead so those need replacing.

After all of that, I finally got the Sega CD I always wanted. Too bad I don't have any games for it and had to "test" it using a copy of Sonic CD I, err, "found" on a blue vinyl record style CD-R. If you read through all of this, thank you.

Has to be the Neo Geo AES. In high school, all of my classmates were talking how the games for the Neo Geo were costing as much as the SNES and Genesis console themselves. Never saw it in person, only in video game magazines. When the 32-bit consoles came, I kinda forgot about it. Finally had a chance to buy the AES console last year. But it going to be an expensive hobby to collect games for it.

@Joey - Great perseverance! I didn't realise models 1's were priced so highly in US, why is that?

I think a lot of it is broken tray mechanism so they just got thrown out by the original owners instead of sold/traded in.

Makes sense, but I rarely see them so high here (UK).

You can buy a region-modded combo of MCD1, MD1 and 32x for about that much here!

Never thought I would be able to own a PS2 (was like 12 yo when they came out i think), now I own 2 limited edition ones, and even had a mint white japanese gran turismo scph-55000gt christmas edition, but sold it. When the ps2 came out, my friend had one, I was amazed of ffx graphics (having only played 7 and 8 at that time) and when he told me that he finished ffx i was like "you gotta tell me the ending, its not like im ever gonna buy a ps2 on my own" :D
then later i got into emulation and snes. I thought I'd never own a super famicom, but then 10 years later I bought one from japan, with a stack of almost 100 carts, all titles I really wanted to play. Then I got a flash cart for it which I also thought would never happen. Now I'm more out of the collecting phase and wanting to have them. I actually play these things. I recently got myself a SCPH-1002 with almost 200 japanese titles, and I'm really playing them :D Now I really want to get a cheap net yaroze.

They usually include a bunch of games, the original box, a Genesis console, cables (sadly its either the RF adapter or Composite cables, no RGB cables), PSUs, 32X, some controllers, or a combination of those things. I actually saw someone selling a model 1 with a model 2 Genesis one time. I nearly bought it but I lacked enough money.

I can't believe people would just throw them out because of something that can be fixed so easily and cheaply. I've heard of people trying to test them with a single power supply and because they didn't do their homework, they thought it was broken when in reality, it just needed another power supply and it would have worked fine.

I normally do but it was late at night and my grammar was off the day I posted that.

EDIT: I finally fixed that wall of text.

I'm not saying a retro gamer would probably throw them out, but put yourself in the shoes of the average joe who bought this back in the day. You're cleaning out your closet and came across this old game system and it wouldn't work, would you really invest the time/resources into fixing it? You're cleaning anyway, just pitch it or donate it.

For me, it will be the DECR-1000A. Dang these babies cost around $10k when released and its heavy as hell (around 26kg)..shipping would have killed the transaction.

But nevertheless after 6years later..its resting on my gameroom now~ =P
