Right, the original Initial D deal fell through, partly because I felt it was too expensive (or rather it was a good deal, but I thought I could find something cheaper).

So, I went a hunting and have purchased a similar cabinet so I can convert it. It won't be here for a fortnight as the courier is busy until then, but when it arrives I'll post images. It's going to be a bit of a change from it's current setup.

Of course, this is the one I would want, but dream on!

The courier will be picking it up next Friday. I can wait as he is cheap!

The unit is an old Sega Touring Car twin unit, split up from it's original partner and turned into a single Sega Jambo Safari cabinet.

Not sure whether you are familiar with Jambo Safari, but it's a Naomi 1 title and I personally don't like it. So that is all being stripped out. The unit will be restored to Initial D instead using a Naomi 2 motherboard.

The wiring has been changed by the current owner.

I've been pre-warned that the whole thing is really filthy and needs a bit of work on it.

I liked Jambo Safari, used to play it all the time when the arcade near me had one.

Overall the machine just looks dirty, doesn't look too beat up.

I was expecting a lot worse, but sometimes a photograph masks things, so I am still expecting a few nasty surprises. That said, I am going to strip it and give it a complete respray to the Initial D colour scheme of black & white, plus I have ordered the ID graphics to put on the unit. Should look ok.

Agreed! I have 3 to do up, or perhaps 2 and one to strip for spare parts. The other two units are due to arrive on Tuesday.

This ID cab and 2 x Naomi Universal sit-down cabinets. One of the sit-downs was purchased for a friend to use instead of constantly coming around to my house lol. He forked out the cash for it, but it's up to me to get it looking reasonable otherwise his wife won't let it in the house :eek:h:

I have a few spare parts for the second one, such as a new CP upper - Apparently that black one is ruined.

lol, yeah that looks pretty beat up. man i'd love to get a cab one of these days. there's just something about having a full set up and then charging your friends to play it that seems so satisfying... :p

Can't wait to see how this thing turns out, it'll probably turn out excellent no doubt.

Some day when i have space, time and money i'd love to own a few sit down arcade cabs and have a room where they can go but i'll wait till i get my own place before i think of doing that.

Well, you are not so far away from me and I 'might' have a spare sit-down cabinet at the end of this project. It's entirely up to you, but you are welcome to keep in contact if interested.

Put it this way, I bought the pair of these units for about the price of 1 half decent one hoping to get them both working.

I will only really need one sit down cabinet. They come apart really easily and you'd manage to fit one into a car np!

Cheers for the offer but i'll pass for now as i don't think my parents would be best pleased with me and also i've got no where free in my house to actually put one let alone to use it.

    Again thanks for the offer.

Parental approval aside, I understand where you are coming from regarding space. I now own 7 arcade cabinets (including the 3 still to be delivered) and I'll have to do some serious tidying up in the garage to get the last one in whilst I refurbish it.

Luckily I have additional storage space elsewhere otherwise this would be impossible.

If however you change your mind, let me know. The Naomi sit down is one of the more compact of arcade units.

Looks like alot of work Parris, but what I've seen from other pics of other unit, I could only guess it quite enjoyable.

Must admit, I get a kick out of it. Much more into hardware tinkering than the software itself, however there is something satisfying about arcade stuff.

I don't regret selling off the Ridge Racer cabinet, but I really am glad I'm getting another driving sim as they are great fun.

My daughter's 16th was a laugh. She invited a few friends, they used the arcades. Granted the units were all on free play, but they spent hours on those units.

Last year at Christmas we had the entire family over for a party and again, same thing. People you'd not expect to ever have a game were loving it. Brings out the inner kid in loads of people.

    Lol Parris,

I bet that was alot fun watch people play who haded known it was more fun than they thought.

Mind you it looks like its in quite rough shape, I can't image the work that needs to be done.

I'd like to see pics of it if don't mind when your finished. :icon_bigg

yeah project cabs are the best. Reason I don't have a cab isn't because of space. It's because I don't know how long I'm staying here for and transporting one of those things isn't very fun. However my supergun works great for now. But I can't wait to see pics of the progress!

Well the first 2 cabinets arrived. Oh boy, was I glad that I hadn't spent too much cash on them. One was viable, the other spare parts (and even then I had to sift through it and be selective).

The main unit I decided to work on was actually really badly wired, not earthed properly and some schmuck had by-passed the main fuse with a piece of wire at the BACK of the fuse so at a glance it looked ok! I kept wondering why each time I switched off the unit my power breaker kicked out.

The amp kept cutting out and the volume was fixed at full volume (an indication that the volume pot PCB was not connected up), which was easy to fix.

Other than that the CP upper was wrecked. I managed to salvage most of the hardware from it, but went with new buttons and wiring looms. I'll fit new joysticks once they arrive from Gremlin.

All in all, a good thorough clean and a lot of tinkering later...

It could do with a new monitor surround as the previous owner has attempted a pretty lowsy paint job on the lower part of it.

The other one was only really worth the spare monitor and some basic bits, other than that I have already committed to giving the frame away to someone local.

Remember the really beaten up Naomi I had? Looked rough didn't it...

Well, after 2 solid days of working on it I finally managed to get it to this stage.

Still needing a decent CP board - I have one, but it is lacking sticks and fasteners.

This morning it was looking like this.

    Worth the effort I think!

These Naomi units really, really clean up well. :love2:

I really do love these threads, even if they do make me feel really envious. One of these days I'm going to have space for some arcade shit, and you lot are going to have to beg me to stop posting about it.
