I'm not sure, it looks like it might have come from a seaside resort somewhere as there is a lot of sand in the unit. I've had to remove a lot already and keep finding more. The fan at the rear of the seating area used to scream in agony the moment you powered up the system. When I cleaned it out the fans were covered in the usual thick, greasy dust you find on these units, but also it was again full of sand and the fan blades must have been scraping against them and being worn down.

However, you can see from the images that something was poured down the framework. It has streaks running down it and yeah, smelt of beer! Restroom theory plausible lol.

The paint job can wait until the weather improves.

Those 2 finished cabs look great but you've not been able to do any with the initial D which is a shame.

It has probably come from a seaside resort being alot of sand in it but once the rust is all gone it shall look good and i can't wait to see what you do with the paint.

Well, with a twin cabinet coming in the next couple of weeks and the weather improving I decided to spend some time today taking the Initial D cab to pieces and starting to strip the rust and bubbled up paint work. Using an electric drill and orbital metal brush it's starting to look a lot better already.

Here's a pile of metal parts. The wiring loom is a bit of a nightmare!

What's the long term plan with this? You gonna keep it or will it eventually have to go to make room for TT? This is the one I'm looking forward to the most so I hope it stays.

Long term I think I am going to keep it as the cabinet can be used for a whole plethora of driving titles, even if the wiring looms and some of the hardware would require changing. It's the same basic frame all the way through from Sega Rally to current titles. Just different plastics, seats, steering wheels etc.

I've moved things around enough to ensure the TT fits with the number of cabinets currently in the garage. I might have to move 1 into the conservatory, which is being resisted at the moment.

With 3 straight sunny days in a row I managed to strip down, clean and start to respray the ID cabinet.

    Looking very promising indeed!

What did you use to strip the old paintwork?

Very nice Parris. I must say Initial D is a suberb addictive driving game. Does anyone know if there is a decent driving supergun around? I want to pick up an Arcade Stage but I don't have room for a sexy cab like this.

No, all driving games are different. You can't have a generic cab for all drivers.

Sadly, even owning the cabinet means I have to change the wiring around depending upon the driving title. That's why I finally decided to go for the Initial D cabinet as there are 3 titles I can go for in the same cabinet. I think Crazy Taxi might also run in this cab as I seem to recall someone had ID running on their CT cabinet a while ago.

Should be OK running another Naomi driver in it... makes sense that Sega would make them compatible.

Yeah, what I meant to say before is that, as there's no universal cabinet, you can't have a test rig either. Think about it - the cab needs pedals and wheels. How would you hook those up to a test rig? They have to be anchored, so will take as much space as a cab.

I am hoping to test that one out as I am planning on obtaining a couple of other titles. I bet the wiring looms are different though.

As a sit down cab, this is actually about as compact as it gets!

Finally found the time to start putting together the newly painted Initial D cabinet.

It's looking okay so far, a few rough edges and some paint issues I'll deal with later, but overall it's ok.

However, I did note that one of the side decals is a bit creased - it was very difficult to apply given it's size and the fact it was onto A: a painted surface and B: you had to line up top, bottom AND the bolt holes.

Still, it's beginning to take shape. If I didn't have to read another couple of chapters of 'Danny the champion of the World' to my son I'd possibly get it finished tonight, but hey, I can wait!
