I see the North issues yet another warning today. They're nothing but a bunch of hot air and yet they think that by now with how many times they've made this fake threats that anyone is going to take them seriously. North Korea = LOL

The North talk big, but have a small bite (Aside from nukes - if they do have it). All the gear they have is from the 1950-1960s. Just think about a 1950's jet with no serious avionics compared to a modern US made jet South Korea has. They'd just lock on missiles from out of range and blow you out of the sky. The North doesn't even have enough fuel to train people to use the equipment they already have. From what I gather, as an example, pilots in the north get 7 hours fly time a year to train. And there is no evidence they have any kind of advanced flight simulators to supplement that. Sure, lives will be lost but the North knows that any war would be a quick loss for them.

so Russians can't get Visas to travel to Japan? Aren't Japanese and Russians trading at the commercial level at least? Hasn't Godzilla ever visited Moscow?

But they could still flatten Seoul with their 'antiquated' artillery at the drop of a hat...

There's a healthy supply of Russians in all forms of life: normal, red-light, mail-order bride. That's not to say they're chums. There are North Korean buildings/embassies? here as well.

You do realize they are technically still at war.

    The north has nukes.

Make light of it, but any nation crazy enough to stay in 1950
and have nukes, yet starve it's own people deserves
    caution.

I suppose people who haven't studied the koreas would take it lightly.

If it was a mine, this is still serious shit.

A ship sinking from unknown circumstances and North Korea "blowing a destroyer in half" aren't exactly the same thing.

There's been several incidents like these (Axe Murder, USS Pueblo, actual naval shootouts), but as of yet, everyone's kept their cool. This thread reeks of sensationalism. Nobody stands to benefit from actual fighting.

the top and bottom of it is that the North have already lost , they just don't realise it.

Time is not on their side, the more the west/SK ignore the sabre rattling the less they have and if they DARED to actually do something they actually claim they would they know that the who country would be one big sea of glass.

the only wild card is that if Ping Jong Phil thinks he's going to get wiped out any ways and he thinks "ah fuck it" and hits the "artilery strike" button. But i really doubt it - N Korea is a family business and he's went to these lengths to make sure the dynasty continues, so it would take a collosal prick to actually hit the self destruct button (and that's exactly what they would be doing)

yeah, i know , Seoul would get wiped out, but in the grand scheme of things that is , at this point, unavoidable if war breaks out. And if they start it (no matter who -they- blame) it's going to be a very very VERY short war and deep down they know who is going to win. Only the natives need to buy in to the facade so they keep producing. :/

I feel sad for the natives, they are getting fuxxored, but they likely have no idea as to how bad that fuxxoring is.

The north has never done anything so aggressive since the war.

It seems the South is taking this on the chin. The people however
are more pissed at the government than the north at this point.

The problem is if they let the north get away with this, they will be emboldened.

well, the interesting thing is that if it IS a torpedo attack then it's highly likely who did it.

and for all the bravado etc it'll be interesting to see if they even admit it because i'm 99% certain if they figure out it IS a torpedo attack (from the north) then the North will just STFU and say nothing.

That's not quite the same to say the least.

I don't think the Korean war is going to flame up very soon. I'm rather expecting a slow reunion someday - may still take a long while (we are talking several decades here), but I see that as the only possible long-term solution for the North's problem that's getting bigger and bigger: poverty and isolation, both supported by themselves more than by anyone else.
The major problem that will be relevant in the future, though, is the isolation. Back before 1989, the GDR wasn't as isolated, there was in fact a hell lot of contact and that helped a lot to reestablish wealth so rapidly.

A war is not what North Korea really wants. If there was a war that NK provoked accidentally (like by attacking a ship), they wouldn't be the superior force due to the lack of allied forces as well as gear. All they have is their nuclear weapon program and nobody knows exactly what part of it is for real.
They want to be independent and taken seriously - by receiving subventions from everyone, how stupid can a government be! Whenever Korea will be reunited, and by today's state of decay it would be anything but beneficial for the South, it will be a massive financial loss for all the other parties.

-Kidnapping of civilians for decades (and actually admitting it).
-Spied in Japanese waters (and got sunk for it)

If this does turn out to be an NK torpedo, I'll bet a shiney quarter the ship was in their waters.
